In May, Dr. William H. Danforth became

the 56th recipient of the Garden’s

highest honor, the Henry Shaw Medal.

The medal has been awarded since

1893 to honor those who have made a

significant contribution to botanical

research, horticulture, conservation,

or the museum community. A native

St. Louisan, Dr. Danforth completed

his medical studies at Harvard before

returning to teach at Washington

University in St. Louis. He served as the

university’s 13th chancellor from 1971

until his retirement in 1995. In 1998,

he envisioned the Donald Danforth

Plant Science Center, where he is

currently Chairman of the Board.

Cosmos Prize

One of Japan’s highest honors, the

Cosmos Prize, was awarded to Garden

Director, Dr. Peter H. Raven in October

in Osaka, Japan. The prize, which

recognizes the endeavors of

researchers and scientists worldwide

who support a holistic global

perspective, honored Dr. Raven for his

“outstanding research work and

achievement concerning all life

phenomena on Earth embodied in

flowers and greenery.” A passionate

advocate for preserving biodiversity

and promoting sustainability, Dr. Raven

has worked for over three decades at

the Garden to develop a team of Ph.D.

botanists who conduct research and

promote conservation in developing

countries around the world.

in the Garden’s Education Division,

Dr. Robert Coulter was honored by

American Forests with a Global ReLeaf

Award. One of three recipients

nationwide, Coulter received the

award for his efforts to bring green

engineering to area students through

the Garden’s “Mapping Urban Forests”

program. The program utilizes

geographic information systems

(GIS) to educate St. Louis public

school students about geography and

the environment while incorporating

math skills. American Forests plans to

use “Mapping Urban Forests” as the

basis for a national student program

of urban forest monitoring.

The book St. Louis in the Time of

Henry Shaw debuted in March to

positive reviews: “Shaw secured

his place in history as perhaps the

foremost creator of our civic institutions

and spaces,” wrote Post-Dispatch

reviewer Joseph Losos. Published

jointly by the University of Missouri

Press, the Missouri Historical Society,

and the Missouri Botanical Garden,

the book traces the life of Shaw and

other immigrants who built the city.

Nancy Hamel Wahab loved the Garden.

Her parents had often strolled the

grounds with her as a child, and later

when Nancy lived in Webster Groves,

she continued to visit regularly.

She became a Director's Associate

member during the 1990s, and in 1991,

she and her two siblings donated the

lightning rods on the Dawn Redwoods

in memory of their mother and father.

Otherwise, her love of the Garden was

private. When she passed away at

age 74 on April 18, 2003, Nancy's love

blossomed into an unexpected public

donation surpassing $4.7 million.

By leaving a bequest to the Garden,

donors create a legacy that will benefit

others for generations to come. Donors

who share this information with us

are welcomed into the Heritage

Society, anonymously if they prefer.

The Zen-meditation Dry Garden in

In January, a 20-foot container was

loaded with surplus computers and

other donated items for shipment by

Air Land Sea Express of St. Louis to

Madagascar. The Garden’s

researchers have been active in

this island nation off the East Coast of

Africa since 1973. Recent installation

of new computers at the Garden

resulted in the surplus of older desktop

models that will now continue to serve

education and botanical research in

Madagascar, according to Chuck Miller,

the Garden’s chief information officer.

Garden divisions also donated

herbarium paper, fieldwork supplies,

horticultural tools, and some clothing

and personal items.

The Garden is grateful to the 438staff members who contributed dailyto our success in 2003.

In May, the Garden dedicated a bench

in the Lehmann Rose Garden in

memory of Priscilla and Alfred Saxdal.

The Saxdals ran their own St. Louis

nursery for 15 years before Alfred was

hired to be the Garden rosarian in 1963.

Through their efforts, the Lehmann

Rose Garden was developed into the

All America Rose Selection test garden

it is today. They also worked tirelessly

to restore the Gladney Rose Garden.

Alfred passed away in 2000, and

Priscilla in 2002. The dedication was

attended by the Caler family. June

Caler is the daughter of the Saxdals.

In 1978, Jack Jennings saw a Monet

exhibition at the Art Museum and

decided to see if he could re-create

Monet’s shimmering water lilies on

film at the Garden. Jennings thought he

would photograph until the weather

turned bad, only he never noticed when

it did. The Garden has published a wall

calendar of his photos every year since

1982. As a celebration of 25 years in the

Garden, Jennings published Seasons,

a coffee-table book of his favorite

images. “The Garden is one of the most

beautiful places on Earth,” says

Jennings, “And we are so lucky that

it’s right here in St. Louis!”

In January, the Garden achieved

another goal in the drive for greater

accessibility. Made possible by a gift

from Janet and Ivis Johnston, a new

hydraulic wheelchair lift will allow

accessibility for everyone to the

Shoenberg Auditorium, a venue where

the Garden regularly hosts lectures,

classes, and event programs. Easy to

operate, the lift is located on the

right-hand side when entering the

auditorium and enables access to

the stage, dressing rooms, and front

row of seating.

New Wheelchair Lift

The new wheelchair lift enables greateraccessibility to the Shoenberg Auditorium.
