Fuel filler door

Always switch off the enginebefore refueling, as it is not possi-

ble to add fuel with the engine running,

and attempts may also trigger theSERVICE ENGINE SOON lamp.<

Press on the rear edge of the fuel fillerdoor to open and close it.

If an electrical malfunction occurs, youcan unlock the fuel filler door manually:

1. Undo the trim panel on the right sideof the cargo area

2. Pull the knob with the fuel pumpsymbol.

Always observe all safety precau-tions posted at the service station

when handling fuel. Never carry spare

fuel containers in your vehicle. Whetherempty or full, these containers can leak, cause an explosion, or lead to fire in theevent of a collision.<

Simple and environmentallyfriendly

Open the filler cap carefully toprevent fuel from spraying out.

Fuel spray may cause injury.<

Put the filler cap in the bracket – seearrow – attached to the fuel filler door.

When refueling, insert the filler nozzlecompletely into the filler pipe. Pullingthe nozzle out of the pipe during refuel-

ing

> results in premature pump shutoff>and will reduce the effectiveness of

the vapor recovery system on thepump.

The fuel tank is full when the filler noz-

zle shuts off the first time.

The concept

The central locking system is ready foroperation when the driver's door isclosed. The system engages andreleases the locks on the

>doors> tailgate and rear window> fuel filler door.

The central locking system can be

operated> from outside via the remote control

as well as via the driver's door lock> from inside by pressing a button.

The fuel filler door is not locked whenthe central locking system is activatedfrom the inside, refer to page 34. Whenthe system is actuated from the out-side, the anti-theft system is also acti-vated. This prevents the doors frombeing unlocked via the lock buttons orthe release handle. The alarm system isalso armed or disarmed.

If locked from the inside, the centrallocking system unlocks automatically inthe event of an accident, except ondoors that have been locked individu-ally using the lock buttons, refer topage 34. In addition, the hazard warn-ing flashers and interior lamps come on.

The concept

The vehicle alarm system responds:

>When a door, the hood, the tailgateor the rear window is opened

>To movement inside the vehicle –interior motion sensor

>To variations in the vehicle's tilt anglesuch as those occurring duringattempts to steal the wheels or towthe vehicle

>To interruption of battery voltage.

The system responds to unauthorizedvehicle entry and attempted theft bysimultaneously activating the following:

>Sounding an acoustic alarm for30 seconds

>The hazard warning flashers are acti-vated for approx. five minutes

>Flashing the high beams on and off inrhythm with the hazard warning flash-ers.

To arm and disarm the alarm

systemWhen the vehicle is locked or unlockedvia the driver's door lock or with theremote control, the alarm system is alsosimultaneously armed or disarmed.

You can have different acknowl-edgment signals set to confirm

arming and disarming.<

You can also open the rear windowwhen the system is armed by pressingthe remote control button, refer topage 32. The window is once again

secured when it is closed.

tem. Press the button on the remotecontrol twice in succession or lock thevehicle twice with the key.

The indicator lamp lights up briefly andthen flashes continuously. The tilt alarmsensor and the interior motion sensorare deactivated as long as the system is

armed.

Interior motion sensor

In order for the interior motion sensor tofunction properly, the windows andsliding/tilt sunroof must be completelyclosed.

Nevertheless, you should deactivatethe interior motion sensor, see Avoidingunintentional alarms, if

>persons or animals are left in thevehicle

> the windows or the sliding/tilt sunroofare being left open.

The system deactivates the tilt-alarm sensor and the interior

motion sensor if the convenience clos-ing of windows and the sliding/tilt sun-roof is interrupted in the first 10 sec-onds and then restarted. The alarmmust then be disarmed and reactivatedbefore it will resume operation.<

restraint device or child seat, please read the following:

Never install a rear-facing child-restraint system in the front passengerseat of this vehicle.Your vehicle is equipped with an airbagsupplemental restraint system for thefront passenger. Because the backreston any rear-facing child-restraint sys-tem – of the kind designed for infantsunder 1 year and 20 lbs/9 kg – wouldbe within the airbag's deploymentrange, you should never mount such adevice in the front passenger seat, since the impact of the airbag againstthe child-restraint's backrest could leadto serious or fatal injuries. If it is necessary for a child – not aninfant – to ride in the front seat, certainprecautions should be taken. First, move the passenger seat as far awayfrom the instrument panel as possible. This important precaution is intended tomaximize the distance between the air-bag and the child. Older childrenshould be tightly secured with a safetybelt after they have outgrown a boosterseat that is appropriate for their age, height, and weight. Younger children

Do not attemptto modify child-restraint systems. If youdo this, the protection provided bythese systems could be impaired.Be sure that all occupants – off all ages– remain properly and securelyrestrained at all times.<

How the system functions

No doubt you have often reflected onhow great it would be if you could per-manently configure your vehicle's vari-ous features and adjustments to mirror

your own personal preferences. In engi-neering your vehicle, BMW hasincluded a number of options for stor-ing personal adjustment data. Thesecan be programmed at your BMW cen-ter.

The available configuration data fall intotwo categories, according to whethertheir primary orientation is the vehicle –Vehicle Memory – or the individual –Key Memory. Provided that each per-

you can have your BMW center enterbasic adjustment data for up to fourindividuals in the system.

The system relies on a bilateral dataexchange to identify the individual userand executes the selected settingswhenever the remote control unit isused to disengage the locks.

The vehicle slows to a pace just slightlyfaster than walking speed.

HDC is available for activation at vehi-cle speeds below approx. 22 mph /

35 km/h. When driving down steephills, the vehicle reduces speed auto-matically down to about double walkingspeed – approx. 7.5 mph / 12 km/h –and then maintains this speed at a con-stant.

You can use the accelerator or brakes

to vary this speed within a range fromapprox. 3 mph / 5 km/h to approx.15 mph / 25 km/h.

In conjunction with the multifunctionsteering wheel you can use the +/–button to set the cruise control to a tar-get speed in the range from approx.3 mph / 5 km/h to approx. 15 mph /25 km/h.

HDC is automatically deactivated oncevehicle speed again exceeds approx.37 mph / 60 km/h.

This indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster informs you whenthe tire pressure deviates from

the target values.

Initializing the system

Initializing is necessary to familiarize thesystem with the correct inflation pres-sures.

In the event of loss in inflationpressure

If the inflation pressure has droppedsignificantly over a long period of time, which is normal for any tire, the yellowindicator lamp will come on.

This alerts you to have the tires inflatedto the specified pressures as soon aspossible.

If you are prompted to check the

tire pressure shortly after a cor-rection has been made, this indicatesthat the corrected values were notaccurate. Please check the inflationpressure again and make correctionsaccording to the inflation pressuretable. Then reinitialize the system.<

A special roof-rack system is availableas an optional extra for your BMW.Please observe the precautionsincluded with the installation instruc-tions.

AnchoragesAccess to the anchorages:

To fold up the covers – see arrow –please use the tool provided with theroof-rack system.

Loading and driving notesRoof-mounted luggage racks raise thecenter of gravity of the vehicle whenthey are loaded. For this reason, theyexercise a major effect on the vehicle'shandling and steering response.

Make sure that the load is not too bulky, and attempt to distribute it evenly.Always load the heaviest pieces first sothat they are at the bottom. Be sure thatadequate clearance is maintained for

raising the sliding/tilt sunroof, and thatobjects do not project into the openingpath of the tailgate.

Secure the roof-mounted luggage cor-rectly and securely to prevent it fromshifting or being lost during driving.

Drive smoothly and avoid suddenacceleration and braking. Do not cornerat high speeds.

The roof-mounted luggage rack and theroof load increase the aerodynamicresistance: increased fuel consumptionand additional stress on the vehicle's

body are the result.

Special operating instructions

Break-in procedures

To ensure that your vehicle providesmaximum economy throughout a longservice life, we request that youobserve the following information.

Engine and differential

Up to 1,250 miles/2,000 km:

Tires

Due to technical factors associatedwith their manufacture, tires do notachieve their full traction potential until

after an initial break-in period. We thusask you to drive with extra care duringthe first 200 miles/300 km.

To avoid corrosion, repeat this proce-dure from time to time.

The brake lamps do not come onwhen the parking brake is set.

p

Constantly vary both engine and vehiclespeeds, remembering not to exceed4,500 rpm or 100 mph / 160 km/h dur-ing this period.

Always obey all official speed limits.

Do not use full throttle, and avoidpressing the accelerator beyond thekickdown point during these initialmiles.

You can then proceed to increase both

engine and vehicle speeds once the ini-tial 1,250 miles/2,000 km have elapsed.

You should also observe the samebreak-in procedures if the engine or dif-ferential should have to be replacedlater in the course of the vehicle's life.

Always obey all official speed limits.

When the vehicle is operated onwet or slushy roads, a wedge of

water may form between the tire andthe road surface. This phenomenon isreferred to as hydroplaning and canlead to partial or complete loss of trac-tion, vehicle control and braking effec-tiveness. Reduce your speed on wetroads.<

Brake system

Approx. 300 miles/500 km must elapsebefore the brake pads and rotorsachieve the optimal pad-surface andwear patterns required for trouble-freeoperation and an extended service lifelater on.

To break in the separate parking brakedrums, apply the parking brake lightlywhen coasting to a standstill – at a traf-fic signal, for instance – provided thattraffic conditions allow you to do so.

engine is running. When you move thevehicle with the engine switched off –when towing, for example – substan-tially higher levels of pedal force will berequired to brake the vehicle.<

Clutch

Approx. 300 miles/500 km must elapsebefore the clutch starts to operate atoptimum efficiency. Remember toengage the clutch carefully during this

initial period.

115Driving notes

Brakes: do not drive with your footresting on the brake pedal. Even

light but consistent pressure on thebrake pedal can lead to high tempera-tures, accelerated brake wear and pos-sibly even brake failure.Hydroplaning: when driving on wet orslushy roads reduce your speed If you

Antilock Brake System (ABS)

The concept

ABS keeps the wheels from lockingduring braking, thereby enhancingactive driving safety.

slushy roads, reduce your speed. If youdo not, a wedge of water may formbetween tires and road surface. Thisphenomenon can lead to partial orcomplete loss of contact between thetires and road surface, as well as loss ofvehicle control and braking ability.Driving through water: do not drivethrough water on the road if it is deeperthan 1 ft/30 cm, and then only at walk-ing speed. Otherwise, the vehicle'sengine, the electrical systems and thetransmission may be damaged.Cargo area cover: never use it to storeheavy or hard objects, as otherwiseoccupants could be injured duringbraking maneuvers.Clothes hooks: when hanging clothingfrom the hooks, be sure that they willnot obstruct the driver's vision. Do nothang heavy objects on the hooks. If youdo so, they could cause personal injuryduring braking or evasive maneuvers.<

If you are in a situation that requires fullbraking, you will exploit the full benefitsof ABS system if you apply maximumpedal pressure – panic stop. Since thevehicle maintains steering responsive-

ness, you can avoid possible obstacleswith a minimum of steering effort, despite the full brake application.

Pulsation at the brake pedal combinedwith sounds from the hydraulic circuitsindicates to the driver that ABS is in itsactive mode.

Dynamic Brake Control (DBC)

DBC is included in the DSC, refer topage 80.

The system responds to sudden, high-intensity applications of force to the

brake pedal by automatically brakingthe vehicle with maximum boost toachieve the shortest-possible brakingdistances during "panic stops". Thissystem exploits all the benefits of ABS.

CBC is an advanced engineering devel-opment of ABS. When braking duringcornering with high lateral accelera-tion, or when braking during a lane

change, vehicle stability is improvedand the steering response is enhanced.

BMW advises against usingretreaded tires, since drivingsafety may be impaired. This is due tothe possible variations in casing struc-tures and, in some cases, to theirextreme age, which can lead to adecrease in their durability.<

BMW recommends the replacement ofall tires – including the spare tire* –when the tires are no more than 6 yearsold, even if a tire life of 10 years is pos-sible.

Run Flat tires*

Run Flat tires consist of self-supportingtires and special rims. The tire rein-forcement ensures that the tire retains

some residual safety in the event ofpressure drop and driving remains pos-sible to a restricted degree. The vehicleis equipped with a Tire Pressure Moni-tor (TPM) or Flat Tire Monitor, whichindicate a flat tire. For additional infor-mation on the Tire Pressure Monitor

(TPM) or Flat Tire Monitor, refer topage 85 or 86.

Run Flat tires are only possible inconjunction with the Tire Pres-

sure Monitor (TPM) or Flat Tire Moni-tor.<

The right choice

BMW recommends using onlywheels and tires that have been

approved by BMW for your particular

vehicle model, as otherwise body con-tact and serious accidents can resultdespite the use of the same nominalsize e g due to manufacturing toler-

and tread configuration. In the event ofa flat tire, for example, remount theapproved wheel and tire combinationas soon as possible.<

Winter tires

Choosing the right tire

BMW recommends winter tires – M+Stires – for operation under inclementwinter driving conditions. While all-sea-

son tires – M+S designation – providebetter winter traction than the corre-sponding summer tires, they generallydo not achieve the performance of win-

size, e.g. due to manufacturing toler-ances. BMW cannot evaluate all tiresand wheels on the market, and is thusunable to guarantee that the vehicle will

continue to perform safely if unap-proved tires and/or wheels aremounted.<

For each tire size, BMW has assessedthe safe performance of specific tirebrands and approved them for use.

Consult any BMW center for details.Comply with any local/national regula-tions, for example by recording the tiretype in the vehicle documents.

The correct wheel-tire combina-tion affects different systems such

as ABS, ASC+T/DSC and ADB/ADB-X/DBC. The function of these sys-tems is impaired if improper wheel-tirecombinations are used. For this reason, use only tires of the same manufacture

do not achieve the performance of win-ter tires.

In the interest of safe tracking andsteering response, install winter tires

made by the same manufacturer andhaving the same tread configuration onall four wheels.

Never exceed the maximumspeed for which the winter tires

are rated.

Unprofessional attempts by laymen toservice tires can lead to damage andaccidents.Have this work performed by trainedprofessionals only. Any BMW centerhas the required technical knowledgeand the proper equipment and will be
