Historic Savannah, Georgia, is located on theAtlantic Coast, at the confluence of the SavannahRiver and the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout itshistory, there has been one adjective consistentlyused to describe Savannah: beautiful.

The reason? There’s something about theunique beauty of Savannah that cannot beforgotten. Streets with canopies of moss-ladentrees are honored venues for scores of historichomes. The town squares that Savannah’sfounding father, James Oglethorpe, laid out aspublic meeting places are now treasured “pocketparks” located throughout the downtown area.

A renovated waterfront area serves as the hubfor shopping and entertainment. Nearby sandybeaches draw streams of visitors with persistentcool breezes and the endless lure of the rollingsea. Finally, there’s an indescribable - but readilydiscernible - feeling in the air that pervadesSavannah, a kind of “laid back” approach to theworld, a “rootedness” that makes living orworking in Savannah an experience second tonone.

By way of affirmation, Le Monde, theleading French newspaper, called Savannah “themost beautiful city in North America.”

Savannah has recently captured the imagina-tion of a nation through its history and itsappearance in several feature films, including“Glory,” “Forrest Gump,” “Something to TalkAbout,” “Midnight In The Garden of Good andEvil” and the recently released film “The Legendof Bagger Vance” starring Will Smith and Matt

Damon. As a result, tourism has become one ofthe major industries - if not the leading industry -in the Savannah Area.

Savannah hosts over six million tourists eachyear. Tourism impacts the Savannah area by over$634 million. The city boasts over 7,000 roomsand more than 100 restaurants as folks havelearned that Savannah is more than just a conve-nient rest stop on the interstate to Florida.

The population in Savannah is roughly130,000 and Chatham County is the fifth mostpopulous county in the state of Georgia.

Savannah also sits centrally located to someof the southeast’s finest beaches. Tybee Island, located less than 30 minutes from Armstrong

Atlantic State’s campus, offers sixmiles of unspoiled sands, tempting seafood and graciousaccommodations. Resort areassuch as Hilton Head, SouthCarolina, are less than one houraway and provide even morerelaxing getaway options.

Whether it’s the lure ofhistorical settings, the friendlinessof a southern community or thebeautiful climate of southeastGeorgia, Savannah is the place foryou.

7The Pirates have won 11 PBC Weekly honors since the 1998 season

The Armstrong Atlantic StateAthletic Department wouldlike to thank the following

sponsors for their support ofPirate Athletics:

The Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad begins a new era in 2002 - for the first time, thePirates will take the field without four seniors who had played every game since the inception of AASUfastpitch softball in 1998.

Gone are outfielder Crystal McCracken, second baseman Tesh Wiewel, first baseman NicoleWeirauch and shortstop Ansley Paschal, key parts of the Pirates’ squad that finished 33-14 last seasonand led NCAA Division II in fielding with a .976 average.

In fact, the Pirates have only two players left from the 2000 squadthat brought home AASU’s first Peach Belt Conference champion-ship and an NCAA berth - senior pitcher Annie Sells and seniorthird baseman Brea Smith.

A new era could not have a better foundation than Sells, a three-time All-PBC and All-Region pitcher who is the conference’s careerleader in strikeouts. The PBC’s Freshman of the Year in 1999 andPlayer of the Year in 2000, Sells will find competition in the circlethis season from junior Australian hurler Delaney Warrian andfreshman Californian Katy Perkins, giving the Pirates a steadyrotation heading into the season.

Smith, a 2001 PBC All-Tournament selection last season, is theonly returner in a brand new infield that features a University ofGeorgia transfer and two freshman. Sophomore Lindsay Phillips, who started all 61 games for the Bulldogs in 2000, will be AASU’snew shortstop and her double-play mate will be freshman Califor-nian Stacy Oliver. Freshman Amanda Kort will play first base, whilesophomore UGA transfer Diana Corwin will see time at catcher

with returnee Kelli McNary. The outfield features two returnees in right fielder Breon

Michel, a 2001 All-PBC and All-Region performer, and centerfielder Sara Noe, a speedy slap hitter who led off most of theseason last year for the Pirates. Joining Noe and Michel in theoutfield will be sophomore Jocelyn Lavender, a transfer fromGraceland University.

Another Georgia transfer, sophomore Stacey Richardson, will be the Pirates’ designated player, but could also see time inthe outfield, as could freshman Allison Bell from Richmond Hill.

The Lady Pirates have been picked to finish third in thePeach Belt Conference in a preseason poll of conferencecoaches, behind No. 3 preseason-ranked Kennesaw State andNo. 12-ranked North Florida.

The schedule contains several strong non-conferenceopponents as the Pirates will visit North Florida, Kennesaw Stateand Francis Marion for tournament action, as well as the alwayscompetitive PBC schedule. AASU will play seven games againstteams ranked in the NFCA’s Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll, and with a new expanded field of 48 for the NCAA Champion-ships, a second trip to the big dance for the Pirates is definitelywithin reach.

2001 AASU Season Review

17AASU recorded a .976 fielding percentage in 2001, tops in NCAA Division II

The Pirates endured a rollercoaster season in 2001, culminating in a runner-up finish at the PeachBelt Conference tournament and on the outside looking in of their second straight NCAA Champion-ships appearance.

AASU began the season with 19 wins in its first 22 games, but a midseason swoon in PBC playleft the Pirates with a 24-10 record and just a 5-7 mark in the league heading into a doubleheader at

Francis Marion on April 11. The Pirates reeled off eightstraight wins after that point, including knocking off PBCchampion Kennesaw State 11-7 in the conference tournamentand advancing to the championship game, where they lost aheartbreaking 5-4 game to North Florida. In the final regionrankings, the Pirates finished fifth, one spot out of the NCAAtournament, ending the year with a 33-14 record, 11-9 in thePeach Belt Conference.

Despite the lateseason disappointment, the Pirates hadplenty to celebrate in 2001, as four outstanding playersfinished their four-year careers at AASU - Crystal McCracken,a two-time All-PBC and All-Region outfielder, finished herPirate career with a .332 average and 26 home runs; TeshWiewel, the Pirates’ all-time leader in career batting averageat .353 and a 2000 All-PBC and All-Region second baseman;first baseman Nicole Weirauch, who ranks as the PBC’s all-time leader and among the NCAA leaders in walks and hit acareer-best eight home runs in 2001; and shortstop AnsleyPaschal, AASU’s all-time stolen base leader with 40. These

four players were part of the inaugural AASU softball team and helped lay the foundation for thePirates to become one of the nation’s finest DII softball programs.

Senior Julie King, who recorded 47 wins for the Pirates, and Diana Julian also finished their AASUcareers in 2001.

The senior leadership by these players helped thePirates lead the nation in fielding percentage as the Piratescommitted just 33 errors all season long. The .975 fieldingpercentage ranks as one of the division’s top fieldingpercentages ever and is the first time an AASU softballsquad has led the country in a statistical category.

Junior pitcher Annie Sells earned All-PBC and All-Region honors for the third season in a row as the Pirates’ace went 18-6 with a 1.69 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 153.1innings pitched. Joining Sells on the All-Conference andAll-Region squad was junior Breon Michel, a juniorcollege transfer who hit .333 for the Pirates in her firstseason at AASU. Sells and junior Brea Smith were namedto the All-PBC Tournament squad, as were McCrackenand Wiewel. Wiewel was also the PBC’s Player of theWeek for March 27, while Sells was the PBC’s Pitcher ofthe Week for the sixth time in her career.
