Do archaeology in Cyprus! Gain hands on experience! Earn college credit! Live on a Mediterranean island! The Course On site, students learn to excavate as well as all aspects of the recording system including detailed note-taking and top-plan draw- ing. Outside of the field students also learn how to process and record finds. There are lectures two evenings a week and field trips to other sites and museums. These provide context for Idalion within Cyprus and for Cyprus within the Ancient Near East as well as expand students’ knowledge of Idalion, Cyprus, and Near Eastern archaeology. Students can register for Field Archaeology (either Archaeology 401, Anthropology 401, or Religion 401) for 4 credits through Lycom- ing College. Students can also register for an additional 2 credit independent study course for which a research paper is re- quired. Dig Life We work Sundays through Thursdays, take field trips on Fridays, and have Saturdays off. Work Days Mornings start in the field at 6 AM. We break for breakfast at 8:30 and then continue working until 11. Back at the dig house, everyone washes pottery until noon. Lunch is served at 12:30, after which there is a siesta period for the hottest part of the day. We return to the field from 4pm to 7pm and then we are done for the day. Field Trips Each Friday there is a field trip to other sites, museums, or some combination thereof, on various parts of the island. The last stop on a field trip is usually at a beach for a meal and swimming. Days Off On a day off, it is easy to relax or explore. In Dhali and the surrounding area there are shops and eateries as well as a public pool. Taxis are also available and affordable for groups to go to beaches or Nicosia, for example.
