PREFACE

As the Chief Information Officer role become increasingly prominent, it is important to recognize CIOs who actively stake a claim as innovators and communicators.

At CXOTALK, we bring together leaders who embody the qualities of leadership, innovation, and positive disruption.

To develop this list of 20 Influential Chief Information Officers, we relied on Little Bird, a marketing platform that uses social network analysis to identify top influencers among their peers. At the time of selection, every person in this group was active as CIO for a respected organization.

I want to thank every person included in this compilation and apologize to anyone we missed.

I also want to recognize Dion Hinchcliffe, Chief Strategy Officer of 7Summits, which develops strategic online communities for large organizations. Dion is an old friend and colleague, and his support and input were essential to this effort.

Many of the CIOs I admire and respect have been interviewed on CXOTALK, so I count myself among the ranks of devoted fans who watch Michael Krigsman’s delightful in-depth weekly interviews on digital business, innovation and disruption. Those three topics are always top-of-mind for the CIOs we interview for our stories on CIO.COM or bring together at IDG’s 10 CIO events during the year.

I was honored to be asked to write this introduction to CXOTALK’s first list of 20 Influential CIOs. (Like everyone else, I do love a good list!)

I’m also glad to see more CIOs emerging as influencers on social media. Many IT leaders still don’t engage on social media as do their colleagues in marketing and other business fields.

To compile the list, CXOTALK used a social network analysis tool (the Little Bird platform) that identifies ‘power groups’ of relevant people on social media and then analyzes the groups to find the most influential members.

In perusing this list, I was curious to see how many of these influencers I knew already (about half of them, happily enough) and who I need to start following on Twitter.

INTRODUCTIONNot surprisingly, a number of these influential CIOs are just as well known outside the Twitterverse to IDG’s publications and event audiences. Among those who have graced our pages and stages are the FCC’s David Bray, Intel’s Kim Stevenson, American Cancer Society’s Jay Ferro, UBS’ Oliver Bussmann, LPL’s Victor Fetter and Arena Online’s Tom LaPlante.

Most of all, this list was encouraging in its great diversity. No one industry dominates. You’ll find influential CIOs worth following across the spectrum of academia, government, financial services, healthcare, insurance and information technology.

I look forward to CXOTALK’s continued good work in the IT community, and hope this list keeps growing alongside the strategic business influence of CIOs everywhere.
