First rule to remember when creating your popup is to make sure it fits seamlessly to what your customer experiences on the website in terms of design. You don’t want him to dismiss the
message thinking it’s just another popup ad he encounters so often.
The design of Exit-Intent popup should therefore be in line with style of your website, matching the colour scheme and typography to reasonable extent. Good idea is to include logo of your company. That way you ensure that abandoning visitors treat the popup as a message from the website and not an intrusive offer.
Nevertheless, when it comes to exit-intent your popup should probably be in the middle of the screen and centre of attention. There are only milliseconds between visitor deciding to leave and actually doing it. At that point, you have nothing to lose so go all-in!
The difficult task for your designer is to find the sweet spot between clean design, clear message, and a beautiful design.

However attractive your Exit-Intent popup might be, all the effort will go to waste if the content doesn’t match the expectation of the customer.
The key here which many tend to forget is that you need to “give some” in order to “get some”. If you don’t provide enough of an incentive for the client, you’re left with a desperate plea that has none chance of bringing any effect.
At the same time said incentive doesn’t necessarily has to be a huge discount or exclusive offer! You’d be surprised how reinforcing message that was already centrepiece of your website can make the visitor reconsider. After all, he might’ve missed it, ignored it in search of something else or simply didn’t understand it.
Good thing to remember is to be short and precise with your message, and don’t go into detailed explanations and requirements above what’s necessary - it’s not the place for that! In most cases, Exit-Intent popups shouldn’t be used as a filter of lead quality but rather a giant ladle for them.
And finally, keep in mind that basic marketing tools still work - mentioning anything “free”, happening “only now” and especially “for you” gives you significant advantage.

Every Exit-Intent popup has to include some sort of Call-to-Action button. It is not there just so the visitor knows where to click - it’s there to make him do it.
Remember, to give visitor a choice. You don’t want to close him in a box without visible close button and tortured by flashing CTA button. Show confidence, that your offer is good and worth his time.
With that in mind, you should underline urgency of his decision. If not, he might just decide to think about it a bit more, which most of the time will cost you a customer.
Good CTA button will mainly tell the user what to do next and what will he gain by pressing it. It has to be confined and actionable statement.
