  • Aardwark (Order Tubulidentata) are often called the Old World edentates but are probably better separated

    from armadillos, ant-eaters and sloths and, of course,

    from each other. The tropical pangolins (e.g. M.javanica

    above) are remarkably protected by an over-lapping armcur

    and have developed a remark-able pedal specialisation that

    allows the possession OF powerful digging claws without

    undue inter-ference with walking (set convergence illustated

    in the tail may be prehensile (e.g. in M. longicaudata)and contain as many as 50 vertebrae, the largest number

    of any mammal (cf. four retained by Man). Some pangolins
