3FAST FORWARD: INNOVATIVE DANCE INSPIRED BY DANCERS

To Our Audience A Message From André Lewis

The circumstances of this calendar year have brought on many changes, from which Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet has not been exempt. It’s certainly no secret to say that our operations have been affected at almost every level, and despite this, we have continually pursued our dream of performing heartfelt and evocative dance before an audience. Although it has not been without its own changes, Fast Forward: Innovative Dance Inspired by Dancers is a true testament to that dream and gives hope for what is to come.

The rehearsal excerpts you are about to see are brimming with creative passion. Each one is a love letter to the art of dance, written with an unwavering commitment and dedication, signed by our own company dancers. Together, they have taken all of the uncertainty, longing and hope that many of us experienced throughout this tumultuous year and expressed it, as only artists can, in a special performance series.

Originally planned to be viewed by a live audience in a black box theatre, Fast Forward is the culmination of many weeks of choreographic work and rehearsals from our artists. We hoped that by giving them tabula rasa, the dancers could begin to express the emotions that so many of us have felt over the last nine months. The work they turned in is exactly that, distilled and refined, as only our dancers could.

Fast Forward would not be possible without your enduring support. On behalf of everyone at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, thank you for joining us for this special look inside the rehearsal studios at the incredible efforts and expressions created by our dancers.

André Lewis, Artistic Director & CEO

Choreographer Biographies

Stephan Azulay | Choreographer Intersperse London-born Azulay received his training over a five-year period where he studied ballet at the Academy Ballet, the Victorian College of the Arts, and the Australian Ballet School located in Sydney, Australia. Azulay, talented in many forms of dance, has been dancing since he was two years old. His talents brought him to the Joffery Concert Group, the Nevada Ballet Theatre, and finally

to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 2017, where he has become widely recognized as titular characters in such beloved ballets as Septime Webre’s Wizard of Oz, Moulin Rouge® — The Ballet, and Dracula.Azulay has previously choreographed several pieces at the Nevada Ballet Theatre, one of which was featured in Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère, one of six Las Vegas residency shows from the company.

Alanna McAdie | Choreographer PompBorn in Edmonton, Alanna McAdie has danced with the RWB Company for nearly a decade. She was promoted to Second Soloist in 2015 and to First Soloist in 2017. Since joining the company, McAdie has danced iconic roles in numerous fan-favourite ballets, including The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Peter Pan, and the eponymous role in Giselle.

McAdie’s Pomp was inspired by the communal nature of dance which she believes is meant to be shared. Pomp is McAdie’s second all-time choreographer credit, the first being for a special Canada Day performance for the CBC from earlier in the year.

Sarah Joan Smith | Choreographer the hidden momentsSmith, originally from Columbia, South Carolina, began her training at age ten in Kiev, Ukraine. Following her graduation from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 2012, she performed with Boston Ballet and Boston Ballet II, and then with the Richmond Ballet and Kansas City Ballet, where she performed many famed ballets, such as George Balanchine’s Theme and

Variations and Diamonds. Smith joined the RWB Corps de Ballet in 2019, bringing her complete depth and breadth as a dancer to the company.the hidden moments is Smith’s first choreographic credit.

Liam Caines | Choreographer Final TrawlOriginally from Kingston, New Brunswick, Liam Caines danced in Saint John at Port City Dance Academy before starting his training at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division in 2003, where he was invited to join the company in 2007. Having since gone on to perform lead roles in The Four Seasons, Septime Webre’s Wizard of Oz, and Vespers, Caines enjoys roles which allow him to

explore character development beyond the technical elements of dance.Final Trawl is Caines’ first choreographic credit.

Peter Lancksweerdt | Choreographer Trois mouvements sur Jacques Brel Born in Belgium, Lancksweerdt began his studies at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp. At 14 years old, he entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. After graduating in 2013, he continued his training in the Classical Junior Ballet of the Conservatory, where Lancksweerdt danced several roles and classical variations including Romeo and Tybalt in

Romeo and Juliette by Paul Chalmer and the role of the principal dancer in Études by Harald Lander. Later, Lancksweerdt joined the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada for three seasons, before joining the Royal Winniepg Ballet in 2017.Trois movement sur Jacques Brel, Lancksweerdt’s first choreography credit, was inspired by the lyrics of the songs it is set to.

Larouche | Choreographer So I ChooseLarouche is a dancer, choreographer, stager and dance teacher hailing from Laval, Québec. Formerly an apprentice with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Larouche has danced many classical and contemporary works on stages in China and across Canada and the US. Today, he has begun establishing himself as one of Canada’s most exciting and talented young choreographers, having recently

flexed his skills as stager in Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story and Septime Webre’s Wizard of Oz.Larouche, the only non-RWB Company member asked to contribute to Fast Forward, has numerous choreographic credits to his name. In 2017, his duet Better Together was performed at the Canada Summer Games Opening Ceremonies, and he has previously choreographed projects for The Bros. Landreth and the RWB.

Yue Shi | Choreographer <Ephemeral>Born in China, Shi began studying ballet at the Liaoning Ballet School at the age of 10. Shi was invited to join the RWB School Aspirant Program after he competed at the Jackson International Ballet Competition. Shi joined the RWB Company in 2014, debuting as the Nutcracker Prince in Nutcracker that year. Throughout his training, Shi has participated in many international

ballet competitions and garnered several awards, a trend which continues to this day.<Ephemeral> is Shi’s second all-time choreographic credit, with his first coming earlier this year, when he choreographed and performed a solo for the 2020 Monterrey International Ballet Gala.

Ryan Vetter | Choreographer Heart to Heart: Six Feet ApartOriginally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Ryan Vetter danced at the Dance Gallery under the direction of Jackie Kriens and Rebecca Hansen before joining the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division in 2008. After graduating with Distinction and completing one year in the Professional Division Aspirant Program, Vetter was hired into the Corps de Ballet in 2013 and

later promoted to Second Soloist in 2018.Directly inspired by the emotional weight that the COVID-19 restrictions have placed upon us, Vetter’s Heart to Heart: Six Feet Apart explores the idea that we are not alone, and there are those that we can rely on to make us feel better, even when they are far away.
