As we celebrate our 17th year at Three Pines Studio, we focus our energy on the freedom of expression in the arts to illustrate, explain, and connect us with the world. Whether it’s through the words of Pablo Neruda, a World Wide Knit in Public Day, a celebration of Frida Kahlo, or the lyrics of Bob Dylan, we aim to be inspired and inspire others to engage in an ever inclusive conversation with our community.

We’ll begin the conversation with our Memorial Day weekend 2017 invitational exhibition—Visual Odes: A Tribute to Pablo Neruda, the Nobel Poet Laureate 1971. Three Pines is excited to be hosting the exhibition, The Art of the Book, in conjunction with the Second Annual Harbor Springs Festival of the Book, September 30 – Oct 1, 2017. And we’ll conclude our exhibition schedule with The Lyrics of Bob Dylan, Nobel Poet Laureate 2016.

Outside the gallery walls of Three Pines, the inspiring scenic meditation and perennial gardens offer everyone who visits our studio an opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of our space here in Northern Michigan. The hands-on aspect of our working fiber and ceramic studios offers a shared experience for our visitors, so they can better understand our creative process by watching us work.

Three Pines encourages everyone to create, and we provide the opportunity to do so through our summer workshop offerings. Over 100 workshops are offered in a six-month period to visiting or resident artists in the area.

This summer we scheduled the popular drop in/open studio days for a 4th season, giving everyone the chance to use studio time for fiber dying and surface design while supporting a flexible schedule.

Our kid’s workshops educate and inspire participants by integrating a different artist and their creative process into each workshop. Kids will learn to paint, cut paper, collage and sculpt by experimenting with a variety of materials such as metal wire, wood, paper and paint.

Through our workshop offerings, we have been fortunate to meet many families and have watched kids grow up, move to schools near and far, and eventually start their own families. Each one touched in a special way by the shared creativity here in our studio. We hope to continue to inspire new creative experiences this upcoming year and into the future.

Thank you to our friend and professional photographer, Curtis Eberhardt for capturing some wonderful workshop moments.

THE COLORS OF CROOKED TREE YARN PROJECT 2017Three Pines Studio offers hand painted artisan yarns under the label of The Colors of Crooked Tree Yarn. Spun locally in northern Michigan at Stonehedge Fiber Mill in East Jordan, the yarns are a blend of rare, luster longwools produced by the special sheep of our neighbors, The Loubert Family at the Lake View Farm near Cross Village, Michigan. The yarn is hand painted by Joann Condino and fellow artisans at Three Pines Studio with uniquely formulated dye colors. The yarns are a celebration of the colors and textures of this unique Great Lakes region, featuring a 21-color custom palette and the Pantone Colors for Spring/Summer 2017, including the Pantone Color of the Year 2017—Greenery.

The Colors of Crooked Tree Yarn project is in its 11th year, part of our effort to support a sustainable farm to market enterprise in Cross Village, Michigan. Our yarn may be purchased at the Harbor Springs Market every Wednesday and Saturday from June to September, and of course daily at Three Pines Studio and through our website: threepinesstudio.com.

Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907, in Coyocoán,

Mexico. Frida began drawing at a young age; after

contracting polio, she was bedridden for months –

drawing “saved her from being sad.” In 1925, she was

nearly killed in a serious bus accident. She began painting

during her recovery and, “In the hospital, it is painting

that saves her once again. Painting is like her im

aginary

friend. It is there whenever she wants it

. It keeps her

company. It keeps her fro

m giving up hope.”

Frida went on to become one of Mexico’s

most renowned artist

s. Her unique painting

style was a means to express h

ow she felt in

her body. “She paints what she sees in

her heart – on top of what she sees with

her eyes.” She lived her life in chronic pain;

people still marvel at how she turned this

pain into beautiful art.

ONE THOUSAND COLLAGES, ABSTRACTION AND THE FIGURE - WITHOUT A MODELKen Kewley WorkshopJune 22 (Evening Dinner & Lecture), 23, 24, 25. $600An exploration of pure abstraction and the abstraction in the figure through collage. We will draw and paint by means of collage. The statements “You cannot make it up” and “You must make it up” are both true. We must let both guide us. What we put down on paper are real things that we can adjust, just as we pose the model in our studio. It is this abstraction that we must adjust if we are working purely abstractly or if we are working from life. We will make

PAINTING OUTSIDE: SEEING AND NOT JUST LOOKINGStuart Shils Masters ClassJune 18 (Evening Dinner & Lecture), 19, 20, 21. $800This 3-day class will examine questions related to how we see and how we convert that seeing, editorially, into painting and drawing. We are working outside, not to make pretty or sentimental pictures, but to expose our sensibilities to the complex and endless visual possibilities available, even at the seemingly most ordinary places. We will concentrate on understanding the structure of perception and the perception of structure. While painting will occupy a major portion of these days, drawing will

be an integral focus, not only with graphite, but extending the idea of drawing into the use of outdoor collage, paper folding, paper cutting, and using the phone camera or the small digital camera. Drawing in its many forms is really the engine behind not only painting, but also seeing. Various collaboration in pairs, two people working together, will also be emphasized. The evening before the first workshop day will include a slide talk related to large visual themes to be examined during the days to follow.Deposit: $400 to reserve space. PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP Heidi Amenda Marshall WorkshopAugust 2 & 3, 11 am-4 pm. $300 Brown bag lunch, or purchase lunch at the Cross Village General Store. Join Heidi Marshall for a two-day Plein Air Workshop that guides students through a disciplined but enjoyable process to create outdoor paintings! Heidi is an award-winning plein air artist who recently had a one-woman show at the University of Michigan. In this workshop, Heidi Marshall will do several demos and make a point of teaching value, process and technique. Painting “en plein air” is a French expression that literally translates into “painting in the open air.” It is an exhilarating and essential practice in learning to paint the landscape. A regular practice of outdoor painting provides countless benefits:

• More accurate understanding and appreciation of value and color; light reads true.

• A disciplined approach to accurate painting in a shorter timeframe. • A study of light in diverse situations. • Simplification of painting process that makes for strong and

dynamic paintings. • A collaboration between artist and nature; an interchange that

stimulates expression. Rather than being a strict imitation of nature, we will talk about a melding of the interior and exterior landscape.

hundreds of abstract collages. Then we will travel back to kindergarten when we did not need our families to pose in order to draw them, and we will invent figures. Next, we will move into the third dimension and make figures from corrugated cardboard. They will become our models. We will work with them and, with our rediscovered freedom, without them. All on a path away from copying and rendering towards a more exciting, and ultimately, a more real picture of what we find beautiful in the human figure and the world. Deposit: $300 to reserve space. Full payment due by May 1, 2017. For more information and housing arrangements, please call 231-526-9447 or email [email protected].
