  • Waipu Primary School Ph 4320135 Fax 4320809 email: [email protected] Txt absences to 0273930218 Website: www.wps.school.nz Tena Koutou Katoa Dear Parents, Thank you for helping your child get off to a good start in 2017. You did this by being organised with stationery, uniforms and getting them to class on time. Many people don’t realise how important the first day of school is. Lots of things are new, the group of people are different and the teacher will have different expectations. These are communicated and reinforced on this first day and followed up for many weeks afterwards. Ever walked into a room full of people late? How do you feel when everyone turns and looks at you? This is how your child feels when they are late. They have also missed vital information for the day. Children need to be at school by 8.15 at the latest so they can get organised for their day and reconnect with their friends before the bell rings. We expect children to be able to do these things by themselves quite early in their school life. It is called developing independence. Communication is important. We have several ways we communicate with you: newsletters, emails, texts, facebook, parent app, phone and the school website. Our main communication method is the newsletter. (It is on the parent app and website) Please read it and put important dates on your calendar, in your diary, on your phone or on your fridge – whatever works for you. Coming events are also on the Facebook page and if you install the parent app on your smartphone it will send you reminders. If I can install it on mine, I am sure everyone else can. We expect you to communicate with us too, especially if your child is not at school for some reason or is to go home in a different way. Please text to the absence line or phone if something unexpected happens and you need to change arrangements. Please limit bus changes and don’t leave them until the last minute as it makes the office staff pretty grumpy! If you need to talk about your child’s learning, behaviour or wellbeing please contact the class teacher initially. You can also talk to me. While our office staff are great it is not their role to discuss student matters and resolve them. They have been told to put you through to me if you need to discuss these matters. COLLABORATIVE TEACHING This year teachers have another teacher they are paired with so they can practice collaborative teaching. This means your child may end up in a different room for either maths, reading or writing. Studies show that collaborative teaching can improve learning and we are hoping it will lift our success rate just a little higher than it is at present. BRAINFOOD Most classes stop for a break around 9.30am. We call this a brainfood break and the food eaten should be as close as possible to its natural source. Fruits, vegetables, nuts and popcorn are ideal. No processed foods are allowed. We do this because children need refuelling regularly and it is quite a while since they have had breakfast. Putting the right food in your body is important as it helps the brain to function correctly. A

child’s diet is important and their food should be as close to natural as possible. Lots of water is needed and children are encouraged to drink this at school. It is a bit like putting the right fuel in your car as a friend of mine found out. He accidentally put petrol in a diesel engine. His Range Rover went really well for about a hundred kilometres then stopped. $18,000 to fix!! SEESAW Seesaw is an app that can show parents where children are at with their learning at school. For many busy people this is an ideal way of catching up with your child’s learning. Last year we experimented with Seesaw and teachers were learning how it worked. This year we will be a bit more formal with what is put on Seesaw. By the end of term there will be a video of your child reading, doing maths and showing off some of their writing. There may also be other group activities. Make sure you link yourself up when the code comes home so you can see what your child is doing. All work put on the Seesaw app is checked by teachers. By the end of the year this will be like the report portfolios we send home but in digital form. MARCH INTERVIEWS

It is time for early birds to book their March Interview time with your child’s teacher. For all students this will be a goal setting time and for Senior School students a chance to touch on the National Standards sheet that will be sent home prior to the day. To book your interviews go to: schoolinterviews.co.nz school. The interview code is ysz4h We will send home paper forms closer to the date.
