Precinct Count OpticalScanner (PCOS) is aballot countingmachine used withballot box. The system

is designed to:

transmit the results and

store each ballot image.

generate reports,

tabulate each vote,

interpret the voter marks,

scan marked paper ballots,

Operator LCD Screen with counter used to interact with the application.

Transmission port - a RJ45 interface onthe right side of the PCOS machine. It is usedfor connecting the external modem/cellulardevice for transmission of election results.

Green Cast & Red Return Buttons special buttons used solely for FTSdiagnostic procedure.

Printer compartment - is where thebuilt-in printer of PCOS is located.

Power ports - The PCOS machine is capable of operating with AC power orvia optional external battery pack (DC). The external battery can last at least 12hours of continuous operation. There is no power switch. It is turned on byconnecting the plug to the power source.

Other Components and Peripherals of PCOS

iButton makes contact with PCOS through the security key receptacle.

IButton security key The iButton is used to access the administrativeoptions of the PCOS.

Compact Flash Removable Memory (Results Storage)Main and Backup memory cards are compact flash memorycards that store configuration and results.

Main memory card is located in the Poll Worker accesscompartment Back-up memory card is located in the administrator

access compartment.

The Backup memory card holds a copy of the election results and auditlog from the Main memory card.

The Main and Back-up memory cards are sealed for the entireelection process. The Backup memory card is used to confirm that the Main memorycard has not been tampered.

Thermal Paper

This is the paper that is usedfor printing election results

and it is located inside thePRINTER COMPARTMENT.

Ballot Box

The ballot box is constructed using a

steel frame and steel side panels. Ithas security features to preventunauthorized access, includingphysical locks on all access doors.

Power Supply

AC adaptor that comes with the PCOS Machine which uses 220 volts AC and anoutput of 20 volts AC.

Changing the thermal paper

Flip open the small plastic flapthat secures the PCOS. Slightly

pull the PCOS to release theportion of the printer cover that isbeing locked by the ballot box. Liftthe printer cover door.

Press the blue button. The printerroller component will pop out of

its position.

Note: PCOS Technician should verify with BEIbefore unlocking / locking the printer coverdoor.

Pick the printer roller componentand remove the old paper roll.

Insert the new paper roll into the rearsection of the printer compartment.

Note: Ensure that the paper roll feedsfrom the bottom of the roll.

Pull the end of the paper roll forward

so that the paper lies between thetwo Printer roller pivots.

Position the printer roller on top ofthe two printer roller pivots and thepaper below it.

Feed the end of the paperthrough the slot of the

printer cover door.

Close the printercover door.

Tear off excess paper.Push the PCOS until it

locks into place. Flip thesmall plastic flop to securethe PCOS in place. Thethermal printer is ready toresume printing.

IV. Installing the PCOS Modemvia GPRS connection (Globe/Smart/SUN)

Screw the antenna into theright side of the PCOS modem.

For best performance, align theantenna to point straight up.

Insert the provided SIM card to the SIM card slot of the PCOSmodem. When inserting the SIM card, the logo should beon top and the cut -off corner should come in first.

Connect the PCOS modemcable to the PCOS modemtransmission port..


Open the cover of the PCOStransmission port. Connect theother end of the modem cable tothe PCOS transmission port.
