Like most things at school, routines become habits. I am looking forward to the wearing of hats to become a BDC habit. In early March, students in Years 7 and 9 will be offered free vaccinations as a part of the ‘School-Based Vaccination Program’. Contact with parents regarding this program will be by e-mail and push-notice on the School App. You will receive a letter as soon as we receive information packs from the North Coast Area Health Service. We will then send packs home with Years 7 and 9 students that need to be completed and brought back to school by the students. When these packs are sent home, you will receive an e-mail and push-notice on the App to alert you to the information that will be sent home. Our vaccination rates last year were lower when measured against the North Coast Average for all vaccinations both for boys and girls except for Year 9 boys Gardasil. I understand that many parents opt to have these vaccinations done by their family GP, and some parents opt not to have their children vaccinated. The purpose of this early advice is to alert you to the coming information. I would hope that none of our students missed out on being vaccinated because the relevant information was ‘lost’ in a school bag. Please note that any current Year 8 students who commenced the Gardasil (HPV anti-cervical cancer vaccine) in 2013 but did not receive all three doses may complete the course this year. If that applies to your child, please contact the Secondary Office. In a couple of weeks, we will host three different touring parties. We will have 24 students from Centre Scholaire Aux Lazaristes in Lyon, France here from 24 February to 4 March. They will be followed by 24 students from Toyama International Studies High School in Toyama, Japan here from 9 – 17 March. Whilst our Japanese guests are at the school, we will also host 25 Canadian boys from Lord Byng School in Vancouver. They will be here on a rugby tour. These visits will allow BDC families to open their homes to international visitors. Mr Grace, Mrs Murphy and Mr Webber will host these tours respectively. They will be in touch seeking host families. I hope you are able to assist. It will be an exciting few weeks at the school. It has been wonderful to see the way students have returned to school this year. They have quickly settled into classes, uniforms and the routines of school. Our Year 7’s and the 36 new students in secondary have all settled in well with support from class and house buddies. The new hats have been distributed as they arrive and currently we have our Year 11 and 12 students wearing hats at recess and lunch. This is an important addition to the uniform as the dangers of the sun have been well documented.

Thank you to the parents of Years 8 and 9 who were able to join us on Wednesday evening to meet their son/daughter’s teachers. This week we will host a similar evening for parents of Year 7 which will include information about camp. If you were/are unable to attend please feel free to contact your son/daughter’s teachers via email.

Goal setting at the start of each school year is an important activity that we encourage all of our students to do. Setting goals can help set students on a pathway to success. Andrew Fuller (www.andrewfuller.com.au), an internationally acclaimed clinical psychologist has highlighted 13 important goals that students should consider which may help make 2014 a great year.

1. Build positive relationships with everyone you know. One of the ways of reducing your stress levels is to set out to have as many positive friendships this year as you can.

2. Challenge yourself. You are much, much smarter than you know. If you practice doing your best in life you will succeed because very few people ever practice doing their best.

3. Prepare yourself for learning. Implement ways to reduce distractions, at least for a few hours at a time, else learning will become a frustrating experience.

4. Get enough sleep. Getting enough sleep helps you to manage stress, stay happy and also increases your marks. You need at least 8 hours and sometimes as much as 9 and a quarter hours a night.

5. Eat breakfast every day. You often learn best at school in the morning and it helps to have some protein in you to feed your brain. A lack of protein can actually cause headaches.

6. Do the most important things first. Get into the habit of being organised and effective. Write a to-do list each week. Ask yourself the question, “What is the one thing I could do this week in each subject area that would improve my results?” Then do it.

7. Use your time well. If you can focus and listen well while at school you can save yourself endless hours of having to catch up.

8. From little things big things grow. Do a little bit often. Succeeding at school can be easy if you do a little bit each day.

9. Focus and immerse yourself. For at least some time every day switch all forms of technology off and focus on whatever you’re studying.

10. Don’t try to predict the future. Don’t spend the year thinking how awful your results could be. Just do the most important things first and do them regularly.

11. Be curious. Look out for and learn things that are fun and interesting.

12. Play more. Lack of blood flow is a common reason for lack of concentration. Get active! Getting your blood flowing sharpens both concentration and recall.

13. Decide to be happy. Have a look at the things in your life you can feel lucky that you have. Appreciate the people who like you and love you. Make the most of the moment and seize the day. Have a fantastic year.

Reading opens doors, worlds and opportunities. That is the philosophy behind the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Last year, thanks to the generosity of families who donated pre-loved books, the book sale in support of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation raised $700. Our target this year is $1000 plus.

The Foundation was established three years ago and, with no major government or corporate support, has raised over $1.8 million dollars to provide culturally relevant books for indigenous children in remote and isolated communities. This has only been possible through the fundraising and generosity of school communities across Australia. In 2013 more than 20,000 students took part in fundraising activities throughout the nation, raising over $100,000. Around 25,000 books were delivered to remote and isolated communities through the Foundation’s Book Supply Program.

oUtdoor edUcationYEAr 7 CAmPThe Year 7 camp is approaching rapidly. All Year 7 students and the Year 10 peer support leaders attending have received notes to be completed and returned to the secondary office by Friday 7 February. If the note has not been returned please do so promptly. I will be presenting more information regarding the Year 7 camp at the Year 7 Meet and Greet and Camp Information Evening Wednesday 12 February.

Camp dates:Sunday 23rd to Wednesday 26th February - Cottee, Hollows and KngwarreyeWednesday 26th February to Saturday 1st March - Murry, O’Shane and Sutherland

Please refer to the note for departure and return times as they vary for each camp. Please contact me on [email protected] or 66515644 ext 295 if you have any questions after the presentation next week.

DUkE OF EDinBUrGH AwArDBishop Druitt College offers the Duke of Edinburgh program to students over the age of 14 years. If students would like to know more about this program they can visit http://www.dukeofed.com.au/Do-The-Award.html or come and visit me in the Sports Administration office to discuss the award program.

The BDC Book Sale will take place in September so there is plenty of time for families to collect pre-loved books in good, clean condition to donate for this worthy cause. Please select books which would appeal to children and to young adults. We will offer them for sale to our students at either one or two dollars per book. Last year, our primary children were very enthusiastic purchasers as well as donors to the Book Sale.

Happy reading.

Ian YoungEnglish Faculty

from the head of primaryThank you to all the lovely parents who came to our information evening last Wednesday, despite the rain. It is heartening to see so many parents interested in their child’s education. We are not just a place where you drop off your kids in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. I have been teaching for a very long time and over the years I have noticed that the children who achieve the most success have parents who attend most school functions, talk to teachers about their children’s progress and generally get involved in their education. We might have your little ones for 6 hours a day for 38 weeks a year, but you as parents are still the prime educators of your children.

We have had some very intensive professional development for our teachers since the beginning of the year. Mrs Sonja O’Connor, Mrs Sarah Stokes and Mrs Kerry Dixon came in to school for a very valuable five days training in teaching children with Dyslexia. To say the school and parents are grateful for these dedicated staff coming to school in their holidays (and the weekend at that!) is an understatement. We are finding that there are some children at school who are not achieving to their capabilities and the Dyslexia training will benefit not only students with Dyslexia, but all students in the classroom.

We have also been working through our Primary Vision 2013 and ticking off all the important things we have achieved since last year, while developing a Primary Vision Statement for 2014. With the introduction of the National Curriculum in English this year as a compulsory curriculum, we have been working hard to get all teachers up to speed. Improvement in writing will be our focus this year and I am sure you will be interested to see the quality of writing that is being developed. Please keep an eye out for some exciting events to support this initiative. If you know anyone who is working as a writer, we would be very interested to know if they would like to take part as our ‘writer in residence’ for a period of time.

Karin LisleAssistant Principal (Head of Primary)

year 3 writingA persuasive text written by Emily Clissold 3CI believe that junk food should be banned at the canteen. Many people are starting to get addicted to junk food and can’t stop eating it. Junk food can do many bad things to you and your health. Another reason is it can rot your teeth if you have it every day. Junk food can make you have a sore tummy and get very sick. For these reasons I am suggesting to you that we do not have junk food at the canteen. I am sure that I have convinced you.

A persuasive text by Will Morrall 3CJunk food should not be banned from the canteen. I believe that we should have junk food for several reasons. Firstly it would be unfair to people who do chores to get treats and they will never get the chance to have their reward. Secondly kids should be trusted with their diet and choices. I am sure I have convinced you that junk food should not be banned and to trust your kids.

Our Crunch ‘n Sip program is continuing on this year as is our commitment to a healthy school. We are asking that you send fruit or vegetables for recess rather than processed and packaged foods. We are forming a committee to work with our canteen to support our work and our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden is well underway, thanks to our Year 5 students and teachers. Fitness programs are continuing in the primary as well.

BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) has expanded into Year 5 and 6 and we are encouraging everyone to increase their use of technology as a tool to support learning. Of course no child will miss out if they do not have their own device as we provide sufficient technology for use in the classroom.

Our Trade Training Centre is almost complete and we have some exciting plans for the future, including community participation. It will be great to have a venue where we can offer occasions for parents and teachers to get together in less formal ways.

This year we are continuing to focus on better communication with our parent body. We encourage you to download the BDC app if you have not done so, to read the newsletter every week and check your emails daily, as well as checking out the website regularly. Please ensure we have your most recent email address so that we can continue to communicate effectively with you.

Thank you for your patience while the music lesson’s timetable was sorted. Piano lessons with Leanne, who has taken over from Renate, begin next week (Week 3). Every effort has been made to fit students in according to parental and classroom time constraints. If you are still unsure of your lesson times or need to change the time, please contact the music office.

Did you know that we provide a number of musical ensembles that you can become a member of. They include: Orchestra, Primary and Secondary Guitar Bands, Primary Training and Performance Bands, Monsoon (Jazz Band), Superstrings, Brass Ensemble, Concert Band, Senior String Consort and Middle School Band. See the timetable below for when the groups run.

If you enjoy singing, come along to the Secondary Choir with Mr Condon each Wednesday, after school at 3:20pm.

We invite student input to the assembly performance schedule. The Term 1 schedule is posted on the noticeboard in the music foyer, next to the middle storeroom. For those who put their name down to perform, please see Mrs Egan the day before performance to ensure we have the correct setup for you.

The Bravissimo excursion to Port Macquarie Glasshouse is on Friday 14th February. This is for students in Year 11 and Year 12 music. Some Year 10 students have been invited. Please remember to bring your permission note to the music office no later than Thursday 13th February. Payment is required either through TryBooking (via College website) or at the accounts office on campus before the 14th February. Students are also reminded to bring morning tea, water bottle and lunch.

In 2011, Matthew Flinders Anglican College toured to Coffs Harbour and collaborated with BDC for a stunning concert at Pacific Bay. They are hosting us, as a reciprocal visit. In addition, we have organised a musical liaison with Sunshine Coast Grammar School.
