FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP: Due to illness, Mgr Gérald LeBlanc has stepped down from his pastoral ministries. Please continue to keep him in your prayers. This appointment is in addition to his current pastoral role. AN UPDATE ON OUR REFUGEE FAMILIES: In his 2018 New Year's Day address, Pope Francis highlighted the struggles of migrants and refugees around the world: "Migrants and refugees, men and women seeking peace, this is the motto of this day." As we recognize World Day of Migrants and Refugees, here is an update from the St. Ambrose Syrian Refugee Initiative. It has been two years since the parishioners of St. Ambrose got involved with the Syrian refugee crisis. Currently, our two sponsored families are still in a refugee camp in Jordan waiting on final approval from the Canadian Visa Office. Jennifer Derwey-Deane, Refugee Sponsorship Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth, continues to work on our behalf. We were informed in September of 2017 that our families’ files were in queue for final review and a decision was close. This past December, Jennifer sent a follow up correspondence inquiring about the status of our families, and we are still waiting for a response. While many refugees were fast tracked at the beginning of the refugee crisis, the current wait time for privately sponsored refugees from Syria is now 23 months, according to the Canadian government website. While it has been disappointing to wait so long, it is important that we maintain our on-going commitment. If we were to end our sponsorship application, our families would lose their opportunity to come to Canada. As we wait for the final outcome, we ask you to remain hopeful, and keep our two Syrian families in your prayers. (This writeup was done by Tony Dorian who has been put in charge by Fr. Henry of keeping us up to date on our refugee families.) PILGRIMAGE TO MEDJUGORJE: Apr 27-May 7, 2017. The cost is $2035 (+ $675 airport taxes/security/fuel surcharges) and includes airfare from the Maritimes, (twin or triple) accommodation, daily breakfast & dinner and professional local guide. Accompanying priest yet to be determined. For more information, contact Hector and Cécile Caissie at [email protected] or 506-857-2295 2 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 13-14, 2018 Our sympathy is extended to the families and friends of Helen Alice Sweeney and the family of the Pubnico fire. Eternal rest grant unto Them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon Them.

WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES: January 14th, 2018.

The theme chosen by Pope Francis for the upcoming World Day of Migrants and Refugees is “Welcoming, protecting, promoting, and integrating migrants and refugees.” “Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age (Matthew 25:35-43).” To read His Holiness’ full message, you can find it at http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/messages/migration/documents/papa-francesco_20170815_world-migrants-day-2018.pdf Our Archdiocesan ministry of refugee sponsorship, a concrete expression of compassion and respect for the fundamental dignity of every human person, has continued to grow exponentially since its inception decades ago. We would like to take this time to celebrate the accomplishments of our parishes, to welcome and explore new opportunities for participation, and to give thanks for the many contributions from volunteers, dedication from sponsors, and the newly arrived refugees in our country that make the ministry of refugee sponsorship possible.
