Facts about St. Catherine

-She was born on the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord (March 25, 1347).

-Catherine was one of twenty-five children born to her parents, Giacomo and Lapa; however, half of her siblings, including Catherine’s twin sister, did not make it out of their childhood.

-She was so joyful as a child that her family called her “Euphrosyne,” Greek for “joy.”

-She had a mystical vision of Jesus as a young child An early biography written by her confessor claimed that when she was 5 or 6 year old, she was walking home and suddenly had a vision of Jesus enthroned in heaven surrounded by the Apostles Peter, Paul, and John.

-She had another vision of Jesus when she was 21 Initially, she lived her vocation as a Dominican terti-ary in silent isolation in her family’s home. Then, when she was 21 years old, she experienced a vi-sion of Jesus in which he wed her as his bride, and even gave her a ring. She was then told by Christ to leave her solitude and serve the poor, which she did. Saint Catherine of Siena, pray for us.

BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament—the Christian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today’s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in “Jesus Christ the righteous one” (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to “repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ “expiation for our sins” (1 John 2:2). What is Liturgy? Liturgy is “the participation of the People of God in ‘the work of God1.’” This is evident in all the 7 sac-raments, which includes our Eucharistic liturgy. “It engages the faithful in the new life of the commu-nity and involves the ‘conscious, active, and fruitful participation’ of everyone2.”
