Our last newsletter went out just before Christmas and we’re about ready to welcome in Spring! Time has gone by quickly. A lot has taken place in the last couple of months and we have a lot of things on the horizon. Last year, Hoosier Hills Food Bank distributed over 4.2 million pounds of food, including more than 1.1 million pounds of fresh produce. We had some great successes and overcame a lot of challenges. We hope you’ll join us for lunch on Friday, March 23rd, when we release our 2017 Annual Report with all the details and share our goals for the current year. Invitations went in the mail last week, so please mark the date and RSVP if you can join us. 2018 will bring a new round of challenges and opportunities – we’ve already held another amazing Soup Bowl Benefit and we’re distributing more food than last year. Unfortunately, we’ve also seen some federal budget proposals that make us very uneasy about the future of our work and the ability of many Hoosiers to put food on the table. But we’ve also had lots of great volunteer support – even on a snowy MLK Day – and we’re building on great partnerships with the opening of a new Kroger store in Bloomington; plans for upcoming promotions to support us at Walmart and Bloomingfoods; and another big IU Health food drive. With your help we will continue working to ensure that hunger is not an option for anyone in our community.

Springing ForwardWow! Our last newsletter went out just before Christmas

and we’re about ready to welcome in Spring! Time has gone by quickly. A lot has taken place in the last couple of months

and we have a lot of things on the horizon.

Last year, Hoosier Hills Food Bank distributed over 4.2 million pounds of food, including more than 1.1 million pounds of fresh produce. We had some great successes and overcame a lot of challenges. We hope you’ll join us for lunch on Friday, March 23rd, when we release our 2017 Annual Report with all the details and share our goals for

the current year. Invitations went in the mail last week, so please mark the date and RSVP if you can join us.

2018 will bring a new round of challenges and opportunities – we’ve already held another amazing Soup Bowl Benefit and we’re distributing more food than last year. Unfortunately, we’ve also seen some federal budget proposals that make us very uneasy about the future of our work and the ability of many

Hoosiers to put food on the table.

But we’ve also had lots of great volunteer support – even on a snowy MLK Day – and we’re building on great partnerships with the opening of a new Kroger store in Bloomington; plans for upcoming

promotions to support us at Walmart and Bloomingfoods; and another big IU Health food drive.

With your help we will continue working to ensure that hunger is not an option for anyone in our community.

Volunteer OpportunitiesBecause of the inclement weather, the food bank did not have as big of turnout for MLK Day like the past few years, but it was still very successful and we accomplished quite a bit. 70 volunteers braved the snow and wind to complete 107 hours of service packing CSFP boxes and bagging up potatoes. We want to thank everyone that came out to help us, it’s greatly appreciated and set us up well for the beginning of the year.

If you missed out on MLK day, we still have great year-round and seasonal volunteer opportunities.

Warehouse volunteering includes food sorting, cleaning, office duties, box packing, bulk food packing, etc. and takes place Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9:30-4:30 and Wednesday and Friday from 10:30-4:30. Some heavy lifting may be required but we can work with people of all abilities. Each shift lasts between 2 and 3 hours.

Garden volunteering involves assistance with Spring through Fall planting, weeding and harvesting a few main crops. This program takes place at Will Detmer Park, 4140 W. Vernal Pike. Program hours are every Monday and Thursday morning from 9:00-11:00 and Wednesday evening from 5:30-7:30pm. BEGINS AGAIN IN APRIL 2018.

Meal Share volunteering includes repackaging prepared food into family-sized portions in our kitchen. This activity is great for either individuals or groups of 5-10 people. This occurs every Wednesday and Friday from 5:30pm-7:00pm.

If interested in any of these, please contact our Manager of Volunteer Services, Ryan Jochim at volunteer @hhfoodbank.org

National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive:

The annual Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive will be held on its traditional second Saturday in May - May 12th, 2018. Please help us get the word out by displaying a “Stamp Out Hunger” in your front yard. Contact Ryan at [email protected] to get your yard sign. And, as always, please don’t forget to donate!

Hungry for Change

The 2018 Soup Bowl, held at the Monroe Convention Center on Sunday, February 18th, was a roaring success. An immense thank you goes out to all the sponsors, restaurants, committee members, volunteers, potters, musicians, donors and attendees that made it possible! We are honored to host the Soup Bowl each year as this wonderful tradition brings together the generous Bloomington community. Thank you for all your support and we look forward to seeing you again next year at the 25th Annual Soup Bowl!

Soup Bowl 2018

Thanks to all our January food drive donors! Lucky’s Market, Tire and Wheel, St. Marks, GP Strategies, and Monroe County YMCA donated more than 700 pounds! The St. Marks United Methodist Church Pre School Food Drive came at a perfect time, students collected 1,000 lbs of food and the Eagles beat the Patriots justlike in the real super bowl! Thanks to St. Marks students and staff!

We would like to say thanks to Summit Elementary, Village Deli, and Soma Coffeehouse for hosting a month long food drives throughout January and

February!

We’re also looking forward to the results of the Spruce Student Government and IU Health food drives going on right now!

If your business or organization is interested in hosting a food drive, please
