Lync clients can employ different modalities depending on how users actually communicate

Not all users are equal in terms of their working and communication habitsBack office Workers

Typically work from the officeIM and voicePrimarily internal communication

Sales representatives Often work from outside the officeIM, Voice, ConferencingMany interactions with customers (lots of PSTN calls)

Modeling: A Multidimensional Problem

Page 5: 2 Pre- engagement Tools Logistics Kick-Off Meeting SOW YOU ARE HERE YOU ARE HERE.

5

To properly estimate the amount of bandwidth Lync might consume on the customers networkUsed as the baseline for the traffic simulation

Customers typically do not know which modalities their users would employ after migrating to Lync, therefore, we need to anticipate (model) that together

Why Is Modeling Necessary?

Page 6: 2 Pre- engagement Tools Logistics Kick-Off Meeting SOW YOU ARE HERE YOU ARE HERE.

6

“Art” and “science”

Ask questions

Make assumptions (if necessary)

Discuss and verify with the customer

Use common senseFor example, > 20% talk time in typical enterprise environment is unrealistic.

Look into the futureTrending towards an IM and video world and not and email and voice world

Techniques for Modeling

Page 7: 2 Pre- engagement Tools Logistics Kick-Off Meeting SOW YOU ARE HERE YOU ARE HERE.

7

Usage models define how much users are communicating using a specific modality

Personas define groups of users with common communication characteristics and work habits

Sites, links, and users are customer data taken straight from the Data Discovery phase of the network assessment

8

Customer facing call(s) typically with same persons as discovery call(s)

Performed after bandwidth modeling is complete

Validate usage models, personas, and resulting bandwidth modeling outcome with the customer

Make sure that the customer understands the outcome of the modeling

Iterative process - customers might have additional insights or decisionsAnother round of calculations and analysis might be neededHelps you to become a trusted advisor

9

Usage models define percentage of users using certain Lync modalityfor their communication

Max concurrency

Common across organization

Four levels defined: none, low, medium, highDefault values (start with these)

Typical as seen in modern enterprise deploymentsAdjustments based on organization’s policies (restrict or encourage certain communications methods)

Usage Models

Page 10: 2 Pre- engagement Tools Logistics Kick-Off Meeting SOW YOU ARE HERE YOU ARE HERE.

10

Personas represent behavior of classes of users present in a customer’s environment

Up to 10 personas in the tool

Personas are typically independent of location

Characteristics of persona include:Utilization of Lync modalities as defined in usage models: none, low, medium, high

Can be job-related (for example, ”our sales reps make plenty of PSTN voice calls”).Can be related to administrative policy (for example, “video calls are not allowed for vendors in our organization”).

Percentage of users working remotely: 0% – 100%Others factors related to administrative policies or users behavior

Personas

11

Questions that must have answers (from Discovery phase)

Building Usage Models and Personas

How do people work in the organization as of today?

What groups of people can be identified?

What are work habits in these groups?

Are meetings a common way of working?

Is it common for employees to work remotely?

Page 12: 2 Pre- engagement Tools Logistics Kick-Off Meeting SOW YOU ARE HERE YOU ARE HERE.

12

Guidelines and impact on bandwidth consumption

Usages and Personas: What Matters?Medium works in most typical scenarios

Change to Low or High if you have specific guideline from the customer

Changing to None has much bigger impactNone is always 0%

Modality Impact Is it really a RTC ?

IM/P * No

Audio Yes

Video Yes

App/Desktop Sharing No(*) except for Central Sites

Page 13: 2 Pre- engagement Tools Logistics Kick-Off Meeting SOW YOU ARE HERE YOU ARE HERE.

13

Sites and links that have been identified in the Discovery phase of network assessmentCentral sitesBranch sites

For each siteTotal size of WAN linkAmount of WAN link that might be used by Lync RTC

So what is the RTC? Does the customer have QoS classes?Industry standard – 30%

Internet links (if applicable)

Identifying Sites and Links

Page 14: 2 Pre- engagement Tools Logistics Kick-Off Meeting SOW YOU ARE HERE YOU ARE HERE.

14

Users must be identified in each siteTotal user population is not enoughHow many employees and how do they work?

Refer to ”Usage models” and ”Personas”

Don’t forget about non-office or part-time workers

Will there be Hot-desking space or similar scenarios?

Will there be a significant number of guests or vendors?Visitors add to the traffic requirements

Will the sites handle a particularly large number of meetings?
