2 Peter 3:1 – Prepare Your Minds• 2 Peter 3:1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to

you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.

Why would saved people need to be stimulated to wholesome thinking?

2 Peter 3:1 – Prepare Your Minds• 2 Peter 3:1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to

you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.

This is because the human condition is one that constantly needs to be reminded of what is

truly important, from an eternal perspective.

Page 9: 2 Peter 3:1-18

2 Peter 3:2-4 - Discernment• 2 Peter 3:2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets

and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.

• 2 Peter 3:3 First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.

• 2 Peter 3:4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it hs since the beginning of creation.”

This was not a suggestion!

Man has been in rebellion since Genesis 3Ridicule & Scorn

Has it really gone on in exactly the same way? Are things getting better? This implies that man recognizes

he was created.

Page 10: 2 Peter 3:1-18

2 Peter 3:5-7 – Warning of Judgment• 2 Peter 3:5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s

word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.

• 2 Peter 3:6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.

• 2 Peter 3:7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

Spoke the world into existenceDesigned & constructed

First purging or cleansing

The age we are in now

Different mode of cleansing for the final roundThose separated from God

Page 11: 2 Peter 3:1-18

2 Peter 3:8-10- Steadfast & Patient2 Peter 3:8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

God’s timing is different than ours

Only God’s definition of time matters Salvation is available to all

Completely unknownLiterally be changed and swept clean

Page 12: 2 Peter 3:1-18

2 Peter 3:11-13 – What Shall We Do?• 2 Peter 3:11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind

of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives

• 2 Peter 3:12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. [Or as you wait eagerly for the day of God to come] That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

• 2 Peter 3:13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

Only Jesus can do this

We must always have an eternal outlook in our life

A new and wondrous creation is coming. One that we can hardly imagine.

Page 13: 2 Peter 3:1-18

2 Peter 3:14-16 – Stay the Course• 2 Peter 3:14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this,

make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

• 2 Peter 3:15 Bear in mind that our lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom that God gave him.

• 2 Peter 3:16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

To whom much is given, much is expected.

God is long-suffering but not forever-suffering

Always be rooted in the Word and wary of false teachings

Page 14: 2 Peter 3:1-18

2 Peter 3:17-18 – Watch & Grow• 2 Peter 3:17 Therefore, dear friends, since you already

know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position.

• 2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever! Amen.

We live in a treacherous world

Abide in the Lord, and he will keep us safe

Page 15: 2 Peter 3:1-18

2 Peter 3: Application• A car is made to run on petrol [gasoline], and it would

not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.

Psalm 127 – The Lord is in Charge

• Psalm 127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.• Psalm 127:2 In vain you rise early and stay

up late, toiling for food to eat — for he grants sleep to those he loves.
