Letter from the Office of the Bishop

Last week you should have received a letter from Bishop Paprocki asking for your support of our larger Church family. I ask each household to consider a gift so we can reach our parish goal and support the mission of our Church in our great diocese. Please read the letter, pray about your decision to give and send in your pledge this week. Our parish goal will support the operations of the diocese for the fiscal year 2016-17. Our parish goal is based on the information provided in our Annual Parish Financial Report for the fiscal year 2015-16. The percentage used to determine our parish goal is 11.5% . The goal is based on a formula recommend by the Presbyteral Council and the Diocesan Finance Council and approved by Bishop Paprocki. Our parish’s goal is $124,000. We can do this!!!

MINISTRY MINUTES

Reflection—Robin Black-Reubenstein

The weather is finally changing for us this week. “Endless Summer” is a phrase that is highly over-rated. Change that happens gradually is referred to as transition. In our culture we often interchange the words change and transition. The fall leaves seem at times, to change overnight but in reality they transition to the wonderful bright colors and then eventually fall to the earth and become part of the soil.

Recently I shared with the Monday morning walk fit group a mini transition retreat from Paulist Press’ Busted Halo website titled, “Transition Retreat: Facing Change”. During the discussion that followed we concluded that we are in constant transition throughout our lives (like the leaves on the trees). Some transitions are more noticeable than others. However, like the leaves it is something that has always been happening but we may not notice until something bright and beautiful happens or when we tumble to the ground.

Change and transition are happening constantly in our communities and worldwide. It is part of the ethos of life. Like individual change it can be beautiful or it can cause anxiety.

The retreat script asked the participant to, “Close your eyes and breathe deeply” and then to, “Recognize that God is with you”. We need faith to walk through the transitions in our lives. Psalm 139 tells us that God encircles us, God is before us and behind us. The hand of God lovingly rests upon us, God is with us in the present moment, God is with us in the midst of change and God waits for us in the future.

2017 Respect Life Program

This Sunday (Oct 2) starts our U.S. bishops’ annual Respect Life Program – “Moved by Mercy”. The goal of this year’s program is to help each of us better understand, value and become engaged in supporting the dignity of human life in all its stages. Our Church asks us to hold all life as sacred from the moment of conception until our natural deaths. That sacredness is beautifully expressed when we uphold the dignity of all other persons.

Here are two of our bishops’ suggestions for respecting life at the end of life. I chose them because they have a more universal application for supporting and respecting life whenever someone is having a difficult time in their lives. –

Invite God In: Pope Francis has said that “praying in difficult situations is like opening the door to the Lord in order that he might enter.” We should pause and ask God to accompany us whenever we make the choice to accompany someone else at a difficult time in their life.

Be Steadfast In Compassion: Compassion means to suffer with. If we are supporting someone at a difficult time in their life our patience may well be tested. This is where we will need God’s help to anchor what we do in unconditional respect for that person’s dignity and that may well mean surrendering our own feelings for a while.

These suggestions come from a brochure about accompanying someone at the end of their life. There are many materials about respect in all stages of life available as a part of the Respect Life Program at www.usccb.org/respectlife. I will continue to read them and excerpt from them during the respect life year.

Clyde Nosser

Deacon Candidate Class of 2021 assigned to St. Boniface Parish for a year in formation

As part of my journey to become a Deacon, I have happily accepted an assignment at St. Boniface for a year of formation. My family and I have been full time members of St Boniface for just over two years and part time members for the past 15 years. I am married to my lovely wife Melinda, a Medical Records Coordinator for BJC during the day and a typical busy mom otherwise. She also volunteers with the Visitation Ministry to Anderson Hospital and is a member of the Daughters of Isabella. I have two sons, Justin and Jared. Justin is a violin and hockey player and a sophomore majoring in Business at SIUE. Jared also plays hockey and hopes to be a future Engineer. He is currently a senior at EHS. Justin and I have been in the choir for the past couple of years. I’m the guitar guy, a member of Pastoral Council, and part of the Visitation Ministry to Eden Nursing Home. During the week, I am a Pharmaceutical Chemist. I enjoy playing golf, reading and am a huge Blues and Cardinals fan.

From the time we have become members of St. Boniface, I have been highly impressed with the sincere warmth my family has felt from the parishioners of this church. I know these are words, but they are truly heartfelt, from the way that everyone has spoken to me before and after Mass and around town. You should truly boast in Christ about the way our parish loves. Fr Jeff has me dropping in on activities all around the Parish so I hope to see you at one soon!

I am asking now for all of your prayers as I continue on my journey to become a Deacon. I’m currently in my second year of Deaconate studies in Springfield through St. Meinrad and taking additional classes at the Aquinas Institute of Theology on the SLU campus. I truly can do this with the love and support of God, my family and this great Parish!

Yours in Christ, Clyde Nosser

Stewardship

Our First Reading from the Old Testament Book of Habbakuk is once again from someone we consider to be a minor prophet. However, Habbakuk, like other divinely-inspired writers of the Bible, captures the essence of messages and prophecies that have universal applicability not only in his time, but to us today.

Habbakuk was writing more than 600 years before the birth of Christ, that is more than 2,600 years before now. Yet he addresses a stewardship approach to life in ways that are significant to us today. Scholars generally agree that the overall theme of Habbakuk is trying to grow from a faith that might be termed perplexing and sometimes doubtful to a point where we place absolute trust in God.

In today’s reading, Habbakuk deals with the situation of when someone believes in God, but when they look at the world around them, it does not seem to match what God wants. Isn’t that true of today’s world as we are inundated with tragic and horrible news almost on a daily basis?

Trust in God is the key for us to be good stewards, and it is at the crux of the power of faith. In his Memoirs Pope Benedict XVI said, “The more I reflect on it, the more I understand that the nature of human life is that it is ever Holy Saturday, not Easter Sunday. We are still awaiting Easter; we are not standing in full light, but walking toward it full of trust.” That trust is the secret!
