Punctuation marks are like stop signs at the end of a sentence that tell us to stop because the sentence is finished. Punctuation marks can also be in the middle of a sentence such as in sentence #3. These punctuation marks are called commas. Today, we will use commas for items in a series.

Items in a series are a list of three or more things in one sentence.• Usually these things belong in the same category3.3 group of words that share something that is the same

Commas for items in a series:• A comma goes between each item in the series and before the word “and.”• The word and is found just before the last item in a series.

Examples:

You have a paper, a pencil, and a desk. List of things

I saw lions, tigers, and bears at the zoo. List of animals

Johnny swam, hiked, and fished at camp. List of activities

He went to camp with his friends Jake, Matt, Jose, and Mike. List of people

Non-example: I saw birds and reptiles at the zoo.
