Find your child’s seat.

Please read the letter your child left for you, and take a moment

to write them a note in response!

convenience.

Before We Get Started

I am Ms. Flood, and I am the Ballyhoos’ lead teacher! I am new to the Keys, but I have spent most of my life in Florida. I

received my Bachelor's degree from the University of Central Florida in Early

Childhood Education, and I am currently working towards my Master's degree in Reading Education. I also have an ESOL

and Reading Endorsement.

This is my 5th year teaching. I spent my first three years teaching at an

international school in the Philippines. It was an amazing experience that taught

me a lot about teaching students of different backgrounds, abilities, and

interests. I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade in the past. I am so excited to be returning to 2nd

grade again this year!

Meet the Teachers

Mrs. Ayd grew up in Iowa and Maryland. She earned her Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education

from Towson University. She previously taught prekindergarten and has worked for the Early Intervention Program of New Jersey. This is her third year at Sigsbee. She has been a support

teacher in first and fourth grade. This will be her first

year in second grade.

Mrs. Ayd is a Coast Guard wife and proud mom of two Sigsbee students. In

her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and her dog Daisey. She is looking forward to

another exciting school year!

General Procedures

• Everyone in our school environment will treat each other with respect and dignity at all times.

• Logical consequences should directly relate to the rule that was broken, though the consequences do not have to be the same each time.

• Changes in thinking and behavior take time. The goal of this approach is to have students move toward acting responsibly more than acting obediently.

Specials Schedule

Reading Workshop

Reading is taught through a workshop model. Instruction will begin with a short mini-lesson.

Students will have time for guided practice. While students are

working at centers or independently, I will administer

small group guided reading lessons. Students will also

participate in Independent Silent Reading. Reading conferences

take place during this time.

Balanced Literacy

Writing Workshop

Each day Writer’s Workshop will begin with a short mini-lesson which focuses on a specific

skill. The students will then be given the opportunity to practice this skill in their

writing. During this time, I will confer with students or lead a small group.

Mentor texts are often used during the mini-lessons and allow for students to learn craft

from real authors.

Homework

Word Study

Words Their Way is the program Sigsbee uses to teach phonics and spelling skills. The program is based largely on your child

completing word sorts that help him/her compare different letter and sound patterns. Your child will work with the same set of words over a two week period. At the end of the two

weeks, your child will be assessed on these words to determine whether or not they have mastered the intended skill.

Every two weeks in the C.I.R.C.U.S. folders, two sets of same words will be sent home. Please keep these words for the two week period. One set is for you to keep as a master copy. The

other set is for your child to cut and complete the word sort activities from the Tic Tac Toe board. The students are

required to complete three activities from this board a week. Your child will receive a Words Their Way Tic Tac Toe board in their homework folder. This will be the only time the Words

Their Way Tic Tac Toe board will be sent home. If the board is misplaced, you can print an extra copy of the board from the

Sigsbee Second Grade website.

Homework

Math

Math packets will be sent home as review of previously learned skills. These will go home

at the end of every math unit. At the beginning of the year, students will be

reviewing skills from 1st grade.

* These are to be done at your own leisure and do not need to be returned.

Extra Practice

Websites will be listed on the homework sheet in the C.I.R.C.U.S. folder. Feel free to

request additional resources!
