    generalinformation

    There are many natural landmarks in Bulgaria, and their orm

    and appearance are quite diverse. Dominating are the rock

    phenomena, however, which, with their odd shapes, have

    attracted the human imagination or thousands o years. Many

    ancient legends are told about them.

    They are scattered throughout the country and they had been

    created by the natural elements - wind, water and sun, which

    have worked or millions o years on their masterpieces, which

    nowadays attract our admiration.

    Among the most amous natural phenomena that attract

    thousands o tourists, are Belogradchik Rocks, the Woderul

    Bridges, the Stone Mushrooms, the Petriied Wedding, the Fossil

    Forest, the Elephant, the Lion Head, the Reselesh Dolls, the Melnik

    and Katina Pyramids, the Stob Pyramids, Ritlite and the Three

    brothers.

    Belogradchik Rocks are locatednear the town o Belogradchik.

    They are a rock complex with

    a total length o 30 kilometers

    and total width o 6-7 kilometers.

    The reddish tinge o the rock

    ormations is due to the iron

    oxide content.

    There are several rock groups.The irst group is situated near

    the town o Belogradchik. It

    includes the most amous rock

    ormations with interesting

    names such as the Rider, the

    Maiden, the Dervish, Adam and

    Eve, the Mushrooms, the Lion,

    the Monks, the Bear, the Castle,

    the Little Shepherd.

    Each rock is associated with an

    interesting old legend. Another

    impressive group o rocks

    is located west o the town.

    The Belogradchik Fortress islocated near the rocks and

    receives many visitors too. The

    rocks were declared a natural

    landmark in 1949.

    The Wonderul Bridges is

    another popular landmark

    that attracts many visitors. The

    rock bridges are located in the

    Rhodope Mountain near the

    village o Zabardo.

    In the past, the bridges used to

    be a cave, which ormed under

    the crumbling activity o the

    river waters. During the years,

    parts o it collapsed, orming

    majestic marble bridges. The

    large bridge is about 15 meters

    wide in its widest parts and it

    is almost 100 meters long. The

    smaller bridge is 60 meters long,

    its overall height is 50 meters

    and the height o its arch is 30

    meters. There is a third smaller

    bridge behind it.

    The bridges were declared a

    natural landmark in 1949.

    4 kilometers rom the town

    o Devin, on the road to the

    village o Nastan, there is an

    interesting landmark, that the

    local people call the Elephant.

    It is a rock ormation that

    resembles the silhouette o the

    great animal.

    It is assumed that the opening

    between the mouth and the

    trunk o the elephant used to

    be a cave opening, rom which

    lowed a spring. Perhaps

    the water o this spring has

    ormed the wonderul rock

    ormation.

    The Stone Mushrooms is a rock

    ormation, located east o the

    village o Beli Plast, on the road

    between Haskovo and Kardzhali.

    It was declared a natural

    landmark in 1974.

    The rocks resemble natural

    mushrooms, but with a height

    o 2.5 meters. The green color o

    the hats and the pink color o the

    stumps are due to the specifc

    minerals, which are included in

    the structure o the ormations.

    The mushrooms were ormed as

    a result o underwater volcanic

    activity and were shaped by wind

    and sun ater the withdrawal o

    water.

    The Petrifed Wedding is a rock

    phenomenon, located near the

    town o Kardzhali, close to the

    village o Zimzelen. It is also

    known as the Stone Wedding.

    Like the Stone Mushrooms, the

    Petrifed Wedding was ormed as

    a result o underwater volcanic

    activity.

    The rock ormation resembles a

    group o people. Hence comes

    their name, which is associated

    with a legend. According to that

    legend, the guests o the wedding

    travelled to the nearby village,

    when the wind blew away the

    veil o the bride. The ather in law,

    who saw her beauty, elt envious

    o his son and desired to be with

    her instead. Nature outraged

    and petrifed all guests o the

    wedding.

    The natural phenomenon the

    Fossil Forest, also known with

    names the Stone Forest and

    Dikilitash, is located 18-20

    kilometers rom Varna and a

    ew kilometers rom the town

    o Beloslav. It is a group o

    stone columns up to 10 meters

    high, hollow or solid cylinders,

    by shape and size boulders

    and multiple stone pieces.

    They were declared a natural

    landmark in 2002. Many o

    the rocks have names, given

    or their whimsical shapes.

    Legends are told about some

    o them.

    In the Ropotamo reserve,

    at the right bank o the

    eponymous river, high on

    the hill, stands a rock in the

    shape o a lions head.

    It can also be seen rom

    the road, but the best sight

    is rom the river. For this

    purpose, you can take a ride

    on any o the tourist boats

    that oer trips along the river.

    The mouth o Ropotamo is

    located near by.

    There are several legends

    about the Lion Head.

    Accord ing to one o them, it

    used to keep a gold treasure

    hidden in a nearby well.

    The interesting rocks are located

    just 500 meters rom the village

    Reselets, 6 kilometers rom the

    town o Cherven Bryag. They are

    situated in a karst area with many

    natural landmarks. Some o the

    rock ormations bear names such

    as the Gateway, the Elephant, the

    Old Man and are associated with

    interesting legends.

    The Melnik pyramids are rock

    ormations, covering an area

    o 50 square kilometers near

    the town o Melnik.

    They are conditionally divided

    into three shares - Melnik,

    Rozhen and Karlanovo

    pyramids. They were declared a

    natural landmark in 1960.

    The pyramids were ormed due

    to soil erosion in the area.

    The pyramids in the village

    Karlanovo impress with their

    shape o obelisks and their

    height, which reaches 100

    meters.

    The Katina pyramids are

    located at the end o the

    village o Katina, near Soa

    city. They have an interesting

    rubiginous color, and their

    shape is a result o erosion o

    delluvial soils, pulled o the

    mountain.

    They were ormed by the

    rain over millions o years,

    but in the recent decades,

    due to the orestation in the

    region, they have started

    melting. The pyramids were

    declared a natural landmark

    in 1962.

    The Stob pyramids are located

    in the Rila Mountain, near the

    village o Stob. The width o

    the pyramids is 30-40 meters,

    their average height is 6-10

    meter and at some places

    it reaches 12 meters. Most

    o the pyramids are located

    on the southern slope. Their

    color varies rom light yellow

    to dark brown and red. Their

    picturesque compositions baer

    various names - the Towers,

    the Crags, Samodivski Komini,

    the Pinnacles, the Brothers, the

    Matchmakers, etc.

    The pyramids were declared a

    natural landmark in 1964.

    The rock ormation the Three

    brothers is located in the area o

    Kazanite near the town o Aytos.

    They are a symbol o the town

    and were declared a natural

    landmark in 1972. According to

    the legend, three giant brothers

    deended the local population.

    They battled all day and came

    back to rest in the evening. They

    turned into three rocks to hide

    rom the attackers.

    Ritlite is a rock phenomenon,

    located in the Iskar Gorge

    near the village o Lyutibrod.

    The phenomenon includes

    our almost parallel vertical

    rock walls, 200 meters long.

    The name o the natural

    landmark comes rom its

    similarity with the side walls

    o an oxcart (ritli).

    Remains o old ortress

    walls can be seen at the

    crags - the medieval village

    o Korintgrad was located

    east o the rocks. Ritlite was

    declared a natural landmark

    in 1938.
