• Chainsaws and hedge trimmers are potentiallydangerous tools. Professional training isrecommended before first use.

• If you are not familiar with chainsaws and theiruse, it is recommended that you obtain furthermore detailed instructions and informationregarding chain-sawing in addition to readingthese instructions fully. We also recommend thatinexperienced chainsaw users practice cuttinglogs on a saw-horse or log cradle beforeattempting to prune a tree.

• Keep work area clean.

• Do NOT start cutting until you have a clear workarea, secure footing and a planned, clear escapepath from the falling tree or limb.

• Use extreme caution when cutting small sizebrush and saplings because the slender materialmay catch the saw chain and be whipped towardyou or pull you off balance.

• Do NOT operate a chainsaw at height in a treeor on a ladder unless specifically trained to do so.

• When cutting a limb that is under tension, bealert for spring back so that you will not bestruck when the tension in the wood fibres isreleased.

• Do NOT expose the unit to rain.

• Do NOT use the unit in damp or wet conditions.

• Do NOT use the unit in presence of flammableliquids or gases.

• Do not use 4-stroke oil.

• Do not mix fuel and oil in thepetrol tank of the unit. Always usethe mixing bottle supplied, securethe lid and shake to mix.

• Keep naked flames away fromwhere petrol is stored or handled.

• Do not use petrol/oil mix morethan 1 month old.

• Always use caution when handlingfuel. Wipe up all spills and thenmove the unit at least 3m fromthe fueling point before startingthe engine.

• Eliminate all sources of sparks orflame (i.e. smoking, open flames,or work that can cause sparks) inthe areas where fuel is mixed, poured or stored.

Note

Do not use old or regenerated oilthat can cause damage to the oilpump.

Use cautionwhen handling

HOW TO MIX FUEL

1. Measure out the quantities of petroland oil to be mixed.

2. Put some of the petrol into the clean, approved fuel container supplied.

3. Pour in the oil and agitate well.4. Be careful that, if the agitation isinsufficient, there is an increaseddanger of early piston seizing due toabnormally lean mixture.

FUELING THE UNIT1. Untwist and remove the fuel cap. Restthe cap on a dustless place.

2. Pour fuel into the fuel tank to 80% ofthe full capacity.

3. Fasten the fuel cap securely and wipeup any fuel spillage around the unit.

WARNING1. Select bare ground for fueling.2. Move at least 10ft (3m) away from thefueling point before starting theengine.

3. Stop the engine before refueling theunit. At that time, be sure to sufficientlyagitate the mixed petrol in thecontainer.

4. In the case of storing the product for along period of time, clean the fuel tankafter rendering it empty. Next, activatethe engine and empty the carburetor ofthe composite fuel.

!

18

Operation

1. Rest the unit on a flat, firm surface (A) - keep thecutting head off the ground and clear of anysurrounding objects. Stand clear of the cuttinghead.

2. Pour the mixed fuel into the fuel tank (as per fuelmixing instructions) and tighten fuel cap securely.Push the primer valve 8 to 10 times until thepetrol/oil mixture flows in and out of the dischargehose located above the fuel tank (B & C).

A

B

C

Operation

19

3. Move the choke lever to the ‘START’ position (D)(cold start) please note, if the engine is alreadywarm this is not required.

4. Press the ignition switch to the ‘ON’ position (E).

5. Hold down the throttle trigger with one hand andwith the other hand firmly pull the recoil starter tostart the engine. Please note, it may be required topull the recoil starter 3 to 4 times to successfullystart the engine. Any more attempts may flood theengine (F).

6. Allow the engine to run idle for up to a minute tolet it warm up before use.

7. To engage the chainsaw/hedge trimmerattachment squeeze the safety lever and press thethrottle trigger.

D

E

ON OFF

F

20

NOTE1. When restarting the engine immediately after stopping it, leave thechoke open.

2. Overchoking can make the engine hard to start due to excess fuel. Ifthe engine fails to start after several attempts, open the choke andrepeat pulling the recoil starter cable, or remove the spark plug anddry it.

STOPPING THE ENGINE1. Press the ignition switch to the OFF position.

ADJUSTING IDLING SPEED1. When the engine tends to stop frequently at idling mode or theengine works but the blades or saw fail to work, turn the adjustingscrew clockwise a quarter turn and repeat if necessary. Do this on awarm engine.

2. When the cutting head keeps rotating after releasing the trigger, turnthe adjusting screw anti-clockwise.

(A) Idle adjusting screw

NOTEWarm up the engine before adjusting the idling speed.

TROUBLESHOOTING - starting the engineIf the choke is left in the ‘START’ position continuously it will preventthe engine from starting because there is too much fuel for the airbeing provided (the choke control reduces the air provided being burntwith the fuel). On warm days, a 2-stroke engine does not need to be choked verymuch. The cooler it is, the longer you will need to leave the choke on.Pull the recoil starter cable 3 to 4 times to start the engine, this shouldprovide a sufficient fuel/air mixture to the cylinder head. When theengine starts, put the choke lever back to the ‘RUN’ position after aminute, and let the engine warm up. If it starts to splutter, put thechoke back to the ‘START’ position for a minute or two. If it doesn’tstart, put the choke lever back to the ‘RUN’ position (yes, even if theengine does not start). Continue to pull the recoil starter cable 3 to 4more times. Then apply the choke and try to start. If it still does notstart remove the spark plug clean/dry, replace and start again.

Operation

21

Operation - chainsaw CHECKING OIL SUPPLYAfter starting the engine, run the chain at medium speed and see ifchain oil is scattered off as shown opposite.(1) Chain oil

NOTEThe oil reservoir has a capacity sufficient to provide about 40 minutes ofcutting time (when set to deliver the minimum flow rate, or about aslong as you'll get from a tank of fuel). Be sure to refill the oil tank everytime when refueling the saw.

WARNING

ADJUSTING OIL FLOW RATENever fill the oil reservoir nor adjust the oil with the engine running.

IMPORTANTAn increase in bar oil flow rate will speed oil consumption,

requiring more frequent checks on the oil reservoir. To ensure sufficientlubrication, It may be necessary to check the oil level more frequentlythan at fuel tank refills. The guide bar and chain are lubricatedautomatically by a pump that operates whenever the chain rotates. Thepump is set at the factory to deliver a minimum flow rate, but it can beadjusted in the field. A temporary increase in oil flow is often desirablewhen cutting things like hardwood or wood with a lot of pitch.

Adjust the pump as follows:1. Stop the engine and make sure the stop switch is in the STOPposition.

2. Place the unit on its side with the oil reservoir up (see image opposite).(1) Oil tank(2) Chain cover

3. With a screwdriver, push in on the oil flow rate adjusting screw andturn in the desired direction (there are three incremental settings):

(a) Clockwise-decrease lubrication.(b) Counter clockwise-increase lubrication.(c) MiddleIMPORTANTThe oil flow adjusting screw must be pressed in slightly in order to turn.Failure to do so could damage the pump and screw.

Operation - chainsaw

TO PRUNE BRANCHES FROM A TREE

Do not cut any branch larger than 30cm thick. This item is not designed to fell large trees, it is for pruning. Cutlower branches first and work up the trunk. Prune heavy branchesin several sections to reduce the weight of the branch and strainon the saw. To avoid tearing the bark, perform a cut on theunderside of the branch and then cut the top.The optimum angle for cutting is 60º but this can be adjusted tosuit your task requirement.Do not over reach and hold the body of the machine aboveshoulder height as this is not a stable position (the pole and cutterwill of course be above shoulder height). When using the pruner,be aware of any overhead wires, power lines, etc. that may overhang your operating area.

HEDGE TRIMMER OPERATION

Maximum branch width for cutting with the hedge trimmer is 1cm.Any branches thicker than this will damage the cutting blades andmay cause personal injury. When cutting a hedge, please inspectfor thicker branches and prune out by hand or another methodfirst. Also inspect for any hidden obstacles such as fence posts orpower lines that the hedge has covered. Nesting birds should notbe disturbed. Check the reverse side of the hedge for anyobstruction or people.

To adjust the angle of the cutting blade:Stop the engine.Push down clamp lever to loosen it.Adjust the angle of the blades to the desired angle and thenrelease the lever back into place (see image opposite).

NOTEWhen the power has been turned off that the cutting

blades will continue to run for a few seconds.

Sap and resin can clog blades and it is recommended that this becleaned after use with a proprietary resin solvent cleaner andalways after finishing a task and before storage.

KICKBACK SAFETY PRECAUTIONS - CHAINSAW

WARNING

Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes inand pinches the saw chain in the cut. Tip contact in some cases may cause a lightning fast reversereaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator. Pinching the saw chain along the top ofthe guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly back towards the operator. Either of these reactions maycause you to Iose control of the chainsaw, which could result in serious personal injury.

As a chainsaw user you should take several steps to keep cutting jobs free from accident or injury. (1) With a basic understanding of kickback you can reduce or eliminate the element of surprise. Sudden

surprise contributes to accidents. (2) Use a firm grip with thumbs and fingers encircling the handle. A firm grip will help you reduce kickback and

maintain control of the saw. (3) Make certain that the area in which you are cutting is free from obstructions. Do not let the nose of the

guide bar make contact with a log, branch, or any other obstruction which could be hit while you areoperating the saw.

(4) Cut at high engine speeds. (5) Do not overreach . (6) Follow the manufacturer’s sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain. (7) Only use replacement bars and chains specified by the manufacturer or the equivalent.

AVOIDING PULL-IN

Pull-in can occur when the bottom of the chain is used for cutting and is stopped suddenly by hitting a foreignobject or getting pinched. This pulls the chainsaw forwards and may cause the user to lose control. Pull-in canalso occur when the chain is not running at full speed when contact is made with the wood.

• Ensure the chain is rotating at full speed and is correctly positioned when making a cut.

AVOIDING PUSH-BACK

Push-back can occur when the top of the chain is used for cutting and is stopped suddenly by hitting a foreignobject or getting pinched. This pulls the chainsaw towards the user and may cause the user to lose control.

• Take care not to twist the chainsaw as it is removed when bucking from underneath the log.

• Do NOT cut more than one log at any one time.

• Be aware of situations that may cause the chain to pinch or pull.

!

24

WARNING

It is recommended tofirst practice sawingeasy logs. This alsohelps you getaccustomed to yourunit. Always follow thesafety regulations. Thechainsaw must only beused for cutting wood.It is not suitable forcutting any other typeof material. Vibrationsand kickback vary withdifferent types ofwoods. Do not use thechainsaw as a lever forlifting, moving orsplitting objects. It isnot necessary to forcethe saw into the cut.Apply only lightpressure while runningthe engine at fullthrottle. When the sawchain is caught in thecut, do not attempt topull it out by force, butuse a wedge or a leverto open the way. Donot fit any other toolsto the chainsaw or usefor any other purposeother than thosespecified in theseinstructions.

! BUCKING AND LIMBINGBucking is cutting a fallen log intosmaller lengths. Limbing is theremoval of branches from a fallentree.

WARNING

Always ensure you have a firmfoothold. Do not stand on the log. Bealert to the rolling over of a cut log.Especially when working on a slope, stand on the uphill side of the log.Follow the instructions in For SafeOperation to avoid kickback of thechainsaw.

Before starting work, check the directionof bending force inside the log to be cut.Always finish cutting from the oppositeside of bending direction to prevent theguide bar from being caught in the cut.

A log lying on the ground (F17)Saw down half way, then roll the logover and cut from the opposite side.

OperationBUCKING TECHNIQUES

Log supported along entire length. Cut up from beneath the buck being careful not to cut into the ground.

Log supported on one end, proceed First, make an insertion from beneath, as if using a saw horse. cutting up 1/3 of the buck diameter to

avoid splintering. Secondly, cut from above the buck to meet the first insertion.Avoid pinching.

Log supported on both ends. Make a cut from above the buck of 1/3 ofthe buck diameter, equidistant between the supports at each end, to avoid splintering. Cut up from beneath to meet the first cut. Avoid pinching.

Note: The best way to hold a log while bucking is to use a saw horse. When thisis not possible, the logshould be raised andsupported by limbstumps or by usingsupporting logs. Ensurethe log being cut issecurely supported.

BUCKING USING A SAW HORSE

1. Hold the chainsaw firmly and keep the saw to the right of your body whilecutting.

2. Keep the left arm as straight as possible.

3. Keep weight on both feet.

The chainsaw should only be used when the buck hassturdy, reliable support. The machine should be held tothe right of the body, at a safe distance.

The chain needs to be moving at full speed before coming into contact with thewood. When this has been achieved, the machine should be fixed to the woodusing dogs. During cutting this support should be used as a lever.

• Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands and keep the chainsaw to the rightof your body while cutting.

• Keep the left arm as straight as possible.

• Keep weight on both feet.

SKATING /BOUNCING

When the chainsaw fails to dig in during a cut, the guide bar can begin hoppingor dangerously skidding along the surface of the log or branch, possibly resultingin the loss of control of the chainsaw. To prevent or reduce skating or bouncing, make sure the saw chain establishes a groove for cutting.

INTAKE AIR COOLING VENT

WARNING

Never touch the cylinder, muffler, or spark plugs with your bare handsimmediately after stopping the engine. The engine can become very hotwhen in operation, and doing so could result in severe burns. Whenchecking the machine to make sure that it is cool to touch before usingit, remove any wood chips or leaves which have attached themselves tothe unit. Failing to do so could cause the unit to become overheated, andthis in turn could cause the engine to catch on fire. Always make surethat the unit is clean and free of wood chips, leaves, and other wastebefore use.

Check the intake air cooling vent and the area around the cylindercooling fins after every 25 hours of use for blockage, and remove anywaste which has attached itself.

!

Maintenance

PLEASE NOTE: It is necessary to remove the engine cover in order to beable to view the upper part of the cylinder.

IMPORTANTIf waste gets stuck and causes blockage around the intake air

cooling vent or between the cylinder fins, it may cause the engine tooverheat, and in turn may cause a mechanical failure.

STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION

Aged fuel is one of major causes of enginestarting failure. Before storing the unit, empty thefuel tank and run the engine until it uses all thefuel left in the fuel line and the carburetor. Storethe unit indoors taking necessary measures forrust prevention and safety. If storing for anextended period, remove the chain and guide barand protect with anti-corrosion oil before storing.

When transporting the unit from location tolocation, it is recommended that all the fuel isemptied. Danger from outside influences couldaffect the safety of the unit,as these cannot becontrolled if on the move eg. flammable fuel, danger from stray cigarettes etc. Always transportwith the blades covered and secure the item toprevent accidental fuel spillage.

33

Cleaning and maintenance of the chainsaw / hedge trimmer before storage

Extending the length of your chainsaw / hedgetrimmer can be increased with proper and regularmaintenance. Aside from this, it will ensure that yourmachine will run well the next time you need it. Thereare particular steps that you should follow to properlystore it in order to ensure that it is still in goodrunning condition even after storing it for severalmonths.

• Exhaust the fuel - You will need to keep it safe bystoring it away from the elements and prying hands.Anytime that you prepare your chainsaw forstorage, you will need to exhaust the petrol / oilmixture still in the engine. Leaving this fuel in thefuel tank to sit for more than a month can harm theengine. It can provide an unhealthy build up in themotor that will prevent it from starting up when youneed it. Even if you drain the fuel from the fuel tankthere will still be a residue amount of fuel in theengine that will only be removed properly by lettingthe engine run until it is fully exhausted. Turn on theengine and allow it to run until all the fuel in thetank is exhausted. This will protect your engine fromany unwanted build-up.

• Clean the machine - Once you have completelyexhausted all the fuel in the machine, you will nowneed to clean the rest of the attachments. Get aclean cloth or rag and wipe off any foreign elementsfrom the chainsaw body, guide bar, chain, hedgetrimmer and engine head. If there are wood chips orsawdust still stuck in the guide bar, chain andsprocket casing, use a small utility knife to pry itout. Make sure that the chainsaw and hedgetrimmer is completely clean.

• Oil the chainsaw - Since you will be storing thechainsaw for a while, you will want to protect allthe metal parts of the chainsaw from rust and otherpossible build-ups. Get some machine oil and applyit on a clean cloth. Wipe the cloth on all the metalparts of the chainsaw. Make sure that you do notmiss any metal parts. Rust can attack anywhere. Forthe chain, you will need to apply a coat of machineoil. Get a small paintbrush and apply the machineoil using this. If possible, take off the chain to oil itand store separately.

• Store the chainsaw / hedge trimmer - Find a highwell-ventilated area to store the machine. Store it inan area that is away from any pests, damp, accessto small children etc.

• If you have cleaned, oiled, and stored the machineas suggested, then you will significantly lengthenthe lifespan of the chainsaw.
