Words to Know

Granny by Christine Dowe

Build BackgroundRead the title to children and talk with them about what Granny and the boy are doing in the cover illustration. Encourage children to think about what they do with their own family members. Then ask: What kinds of things do you think Granny and the boy might do together?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that this story tells about different things that Granny likes to do with her grandson. Suggested language: Turn to page 2. What is Granny doing? The book says: Granny likes to sing. Say the word likes. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in likes? Find the word likes and put your fi nger under it. What can you tell from the picture about how the boy feels? How can you tell?

Page 3: On page 3, the book says: Granny like to fi sh. Say the word to. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in to? Find to and put your fi nger under it. How do the boy and Granny feel about what is happening in this picture? How can you tell?

Page 4: Turn to page 4. What does Granny like to do here? The book says: Granny likes to read. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in read? Find read and put your fi nger under it. Do you like to read with a family member? Why or why not?

Now go back to the beginning and read to fi nd out what Granny likes to do with her grandson.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseAsk children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the story, or what they found interesting.Suggested language: Which of the things in the story would you like to do with Granny? Why?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, make sure children understand these points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• Granny likes to do many things.

• She likes to do things with her grandson.

• A grandmother and a grandson can have fun together.

• It’s fun to share different activities together.

• The writer uses the same language on each page.

• The last page shows that Granny and her grandson are tired after all their activities.

Choices for SupportConcepts of PrintTo reinforce the direction of reading, model sweeping your hand from left to right under sentences in the story. Have children repeat the same sweeping motion from left to right.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Name the Beginning Sound Say the word sing and ask children to repeat it. Ask children to name the beginning sound in sing. Continue in the same way with these words: fi sh, read, book, paint, ride, bike, pool, game, dance.

• Matching Letters Materials: upper and lower case magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose letters and match them with their upper and lower case form.

Writing About ReadingCritical ThinkingRead the directions for children on BLM 2.6 and guide them in answering the questions.

RespondingRead aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities.

Target Comprehension SkillUnderstanding Characters

Target Comprehension Skill Tell children that thinking about what a

character does in a story can help readers understand what the character is like. Model how to think about what Granny is like.

Think Aloud

I can think about the things Granny likes to do. One thing she likes to do is ride a bike. That shows that Granny has a lot of energy and she likes to do things outside. Granny wears a helmet when she rides her bike. That shows that she likes to be safe. These things all help me think about what kind of person Granny is.

Practice the SkillHave children share examples of other characters they have read about who like doing things outside.

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.

What else does Granny like to do? Draw a picture. Show something else Granny likes to do.

Write about why she likes to do it.
