Volume 1 Issue 1 July 2013
The Caribbean District The eastern Canada and Caribbean District, now the Caribbean District, is one of the oldest in Circle K International, having been in existence for over forty years. The first club was chartered at the University of Western Ontario, Ontario Canada, on March 26, 1949, making it the second Circle K throughout Circle K International. The District Status was granted until 1958 when there was finally more than six Circle K clubs in the Ontario-Quebec-Maritimes Kiwanis District. In February 1959, the first District Convention was held to establish the Circle K District of Ontario-Quebec-Maritimes. In 2010 the district became the Caribbean District through petition of the then Northern Lights Division (now Eastern Canada District) who opted to form their own district. The first Governor of the Caribbean District was Jerome Johnson of the UWI, WJC club.

“Caribbean Flavor” Bulletin 2
!
History The first inhabitants of Aruba were the Caquetio Indians of the Arawak tribe from the South American mainland. In 1499 Aruba was discovered by Alonso de Ojeda and was claimed for the Spanish trone. He named it ‘la isla de los gigantes’ (English: ‘the island of giants’). Aruba’s strategic location was recognized by the Dutch who initially occupied the island in 1636 to protect their salt supply from the mainland and establish a naval base in the Caribbean during their 80- year war with Spain.
Culture Aruba is a multicultural island from its cuisine, architecture, language, celebrations and holidays. Aruba’s population is at about 115,000 inhabitants varying from over 90 different nationalities. The modern Aruban is generally of mixed ancestry, claiming Caquetio Indian, African and European roots. Aruba has a healthy economy, a strong educational system, and one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean.
Our Language The language spoken in Aruba is Papiamento, it’s an Afro-Portuguese Creole, which over the years, has grown in syntax and lexicon with increased borrowings from Dutch, English and Spanish, but still possessing its unique rhythm and meanings. Papiamento is spoken on the ABC-islands, which are Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

The Caribbean Circle K District Officers Training Conference
!
!
Friday May 31st to Sunday June 2nd, 2013 Oberlin Camp & Conference Centre Fifty-two (52) Circle K members attended the conference from all three divisions from twelve different clubs. The first day stated with a team building opening session. The Saturday proved to be a true test with the hosting of over eight fora. Addressed were topics
such as delegating, conflict resolution, service and goal setting. After a long day of training, the Circle K’ers had the opportunity to relax and enjoy the fundraising party, “UNLEASHED: The Black & White Edition”, which was organized for the Eliminate Project. Sunday was a day to relax and have some fun with the fellow Circle K’ers. Everybody had the chance to enjoy the cool waters of Castleton
Gardens and the nature. The weekend closed with a BANG! The District Council meeting was very interesting with the unveiling of the Caribbean District mascot, which is Palmie the Palm/coconut tree. The Circle K’ers also had the chance to meet with the district administrator, Damion Lawrence, which gave them the chance to bring forward any suggestions or recommendations to the district. In conclusion OTC 2013 was a well-planned weekend of conference and training. !

Circle K International Board
WHO AM I? My name is Tracey Werleman, I am a student at the University of Aruba. I am a second year student of the Faculty of Arts and Science of the Department of Social Work & Development. It is my passion to help others. I have been doing volunteer work for a very long time. It all started when I joined the Red Cross about 7 to 8 years ago. Since than I have
been helping out with different projects around Aruba. Last year I joined Circle K as an official member, even though I have been helping out for some time before even being a student at the University. I also volunteer with the Mary Joan Foundation, breast cancer support team, of Aruba. I love to organize events, do community work and especially help children in need. After a couple of months as a member I was approach to run for Caribbean Bulletin Editor, I am pleased to introduce myself as the Caribbean Bulletin Editor for this board year. I hope that you find pleasure in reading this bulletin and hope to keep you informed during this board year of the Caribbean District.

When you walk in ,
you give hope to the more than half a million
babies born too soon each year. The money
you raise supports programs in your
community that help moms have healthy,
full-term pregnancies. And it funds research
to find answers to the problems that
threaten our babies. We’ve been walking
since 1970 and have raised an incredible $2
billion to benefit all babies.
