    The Honourable the English Fast India Company herebyglgages i" 4. .event of their Highnesses the Sulian andTumungong, their heirs or s-uccessors, referring to reside per-manently in any portion of their own States, and to reroovefor that purpose from Singapore, to pay unto them, that is tosay, to His Highness the Sultan Hussain Mahomed Shah, hisheir or successor, the sg1n of twenty thousand (zo,ooo) SpaaishDollars, ?4, tg His Highness the Datu Tumungong AUdutRihman Sri Maharajah, his heir or successor, the sum of fifteenthousand (t5,ooo) Spanish Dollars.r

    Anrrcrr VII.Their Highnesses he Sultan Hussain Mahomed Shah andthe Datu T'mungong Abdul Rahman Sri Maharajah, in con-sideration of the payment specified in the last Article, herebyrdinquish for themselves, their heirs, and successors, o theHonourable he English East India Company, their heirs andsuccessors or ever, all right and title to every descriptionof immovable property, whether in lands, houses,gardens,orchards, or timber trees, of which their said Highneises maybe possessed-within ftg Tr"land f Singapore or its-dependenciesat the tirue they may think proper to withdraw from tl're saidisland for the purpose of permanently residing within theirown States, but it is reciprocally and clearly understood hatthe provisions of this Article shall not extend to any descrip-tion'of property which may be held by any follower 6r retairrerof their Highnesses beyond the precincts of the ground atpresent allotted for the actual residence of their saidHighnesses.

    1 8 z4 383Anrrcrr VIII.Their Highnesses the Sultan Hussain Mahomed Shah, andthe Datu Tumungong Abdul Rahman Sri Maharajah herebyengage that, as long as tJrey shall continue to reside withinthe Island of Singapore, or to draw their respective monthlystipends from the Honourable the English East India Com-pany, as provided for in the present Treaty, they shall enterinto no alliance and maintain no correspondence with anyforeign power or potentate whatsoever, without the knowledgeand consent of the said Honourable the English East IndiaCompany, their heirs and Successors.Anrrcm IX.

    The Honourablethe English East India Company herebyengages, that, in the event of their Highnesses the SultanHussain Mahomed Shah, and the Datu Tumungong AbdulRahman Sri Maharajah removing from the Island of Singa-pore, as contemplated rn the 6th Article, and being distressedwithin their own territories on such removal, to afford them,either at Singapore or Prince of Wales' Island, a personalasYlum and Protecttot' *rra',E x.

    The contracting parties hereby stipulate and agree, thatneither party shall be bound to interfere in the internal con-cerns of the other's govemment, or in any political dissen-sions or wars which may arise within their respective territories,nor to support each other by forcq of arms against any thirdparty whatever.

    The contracting parties hereby engage to use every meanswithin their power respectively, for the suppression of robberyand piracy within the Straits of Malacca, as well as the othernarrow seas, straits, and rivers bordering upon, or withintheir respective territories, in as far as the same shall be con-nected *ith the dominions and immediate interests of theirsaid Highnesses' Anrrcrn XII.Their Highnesses the Sultan Hussain Mahomed Shah,and the Datu Tumungong Abdul Rahman Sri Maharajahhereby engage to maintain a free and unshackled trade every-where within their dominions, and to admit the'trade and

IESMahomed Shah and the Datu Tumungong Abdul Rahman SriMaharajalr shall continue. to reside on the Island of Singapore,not to permit any retainer or follower of their said Highnesseswho shall desert from their actual service, to dwell or remainin the Island of Singapore or its dependencies. But it ishereby cleaily understood, that all such retainers and followersshall be natu.ral born subjects of such parts of their Highnesses'dominions only in which their authority is at present sub-stantially established, and that their names, at the periodof entering the Service of their Highnesses, shall have beenduly and voluntarily inscribed in a register, to be kept forthat purpose by the chief local authority for the time being.

    AnucrB XIV.It is herebymutually stipulated or and agreed,hat theconditions of all former Conventions, Treaties, or Agreementsentered into between the Honourable the English East IndiaCompany and their Highnesses the Sultan and Tumungongof Johore, shall be considered as abrogated and annulled bythe present Treaty, and tJrey are hereby abrogated and annulledaccordingly, always, however, with the exception of such priorconditions as have conferled on the Honourable thc EnglishEast India Company any right or title to the occupation orpossession of the Island of Singapore and its dependencies,as above-rnentioned.Done and concluded at Singapore, the day and year asabove written.
