A Wooden Pullman Car Plaque CAR PHOENIX. Pullman armorial device on circular dark wood plaque from Preston Park Works Brighton, 1952 built first class parlour car to schedule No. 302. This car was unusual in that it used the chassis from 1927 built kitchen car ‘Rainbow’ destroyed by fire in 1936. Used on Golden Arrow service/royal duties until withdrawal 1972 and sold in 1973 for use as a restaurant in Lyon, France. Now restored and part of the VSOE fleet. These plaques were replacements for Pullman clocks when they were removed from the cars. VGC. 8¾” dia.

Launched 13/12/1928 and delivered to SR Southampton 15/03/1929 and entering service on the Dover – Calais route 15/05/1929. Converted to a troopship 09/1939, evacuating troops from Boulogne/Calais (1940) and 5 trips to Dunkirk. In 06/1944 it took part in the Normandy invasion and returned to SR service 07/1945. Its final crossing took place 27/09/1964 and was finally scrapped at Willebroek, Belgium 30/07/1965. C/W original wax infill to lettering and mounted on shaped light wood backing board. It was also part of Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral train and used on the final run of the Golden Arrow. Sold out of service to a brewery company and later restored as part of the VSOE fleet.
