The object of the Gazette is to publish a weekly record of crime in a compendious form for the use of the Police. '/w,.—Prom Wednesday, the 1st March, a Police Gazette will be published weekly, for distribu­tion amongst the Police Force in this Colony, who are hereby instructed to make themselves thoroughly acquainted with the contents thereof, and by vigi­lance, activity, and zeal, to endeavor to detect the crimes alluded to, arrest the absconders described, and gather the information sought.

The object of the Gazette is to publish a weekly record of crime in a compendious form for the use of the Police.

To ensure accuracy and completeness in its com­pilation, it is essential that all members of the Force should cooperate honestly and zealously. All criminal informations, of any nature whatsoever, should be forwarded to the Detective Office by every available opportunity. In all such informations the minutest particulars should be entered.

In forwarding reports of Inquests, or deaths, every particular concerning the person kiUed or found dead should be entered. If expirees or convicts, the Eegister Number should be stated.

In form P22, it ought always to be stated by whom the arrest was effected.

The names of all persons and places should be spelt correctly and written legibly ; the christian as Well as the surname being written in fuU.

All brands should be accurately described.

A copy of the Gazette will be forwarded weekly from the Chief Office direct to each Police Station in the Colony, and also to the Officers in charge of Divisions, who in their periodical visits to PoUce Stations wiU see that the Gazettes are properly filed, and satisfy themselves that all the members of the Force in their Divisions make themselves thoroughly acquainted with the contents. The Superintendent looks to the Officers in charge of Divisions for a ready support in carrying out the above.

Stealing in Dwellings, from the Person, &c.

Eeported on 22nd ultimo, that a carpenter's plough was stolen from the workshop of John Delmar, Newcastle, about 18 months ago, and that this plough was in the possession of Herbert Davis, exp., on 23rd ult.; Davis took it to Northam Police Station, stating that he had borrowed it from John Eichardson, carpenter, Newcastle. Eichardson is the party suspected of stealing same. The Newcastle Police are making enquiry.—C.L 33.

On 22nd ultimo, from the premises of Eichard Delaporte, Bunbury,—a greyhound pup, eight weeks old, male, colour black, white round the neck. —C.L 34.

On night of 24th ultimo, from off the Vasse Jetty, the property of W. E. Bunbury,—about 18 bottles of AUsop's Indian Pale Ale; quart bottles. These bottles were in a case, the case having been broken by the thieves. Three sailors belonging to the barque Ashburton, one named John Golding sus­pected of this.—C.L 35.

On 23rd ult., from the premises of J. Mewett, Vasse; the property of John Green,—pair of blue blankets ; one has been torn down the side, and sewn up.—C.L 36.

On 28th ult., from the person of Alexander Bailey, in the Old EstabUshment yard, Fremantle,—purse, containing ten one-pound notes, a pearl, and a letter. The pearl and letter since recovered. George Eeeves, exp., and Joseph Devaney, arrested.—FtcZe Apprehensions.—C.L 37.

On 26th ult., from the house of Michael Bums, Deepdale, Newcastle,—about half of a smaU chest of tea, two bars of soap, and about 501bs. of salt pork. John Doherty, exp., late Eeg. No. 7400, suspected.—

On or about 16th ult., from the premises of Arthur Patten, Geraldton,—new Crimean shirt, red and yellow stripes; pair of new duck trowsers, and blue serge coat neariy new. A native named Colby Billy suspected ,and warrant granted. Vide Warrants— O.x. 40.

Horses and Cattle. Stolen in November, 1875, from the St. Werburg,

Albany District, the property of George Egerton Warburton—Grey gelding, between 6 and 7 years old, about 15 hands high, draught, but not heavy, branded on one shoulder with a triangle with a letter something Uke 2 in centre, but might be S; and another brand shape of a bottle, either above or below the triangle. Information received at Albany on 23rd ultimo.—C.L 38.

Property Lost. On 15th ult., between York and the Lakes,—Gold

ring, blood stone, settUig richly chased ; by Pyke, of York.

On 27th ult., by Miss Lockhart, Vasse,—Gold albert chain. Description—Australian gold, snake pattern, supposed lost on beach, near Vasse.

On or about 15th December last, between Perth and Fremantle,—Demy blue-lined envelope (un­sealed), containing parchment Fee simple of a Newcastle Town Grant, and another paper. Any person forwarding the same to Detective Office will be handsomely rewarded. Enquiries to be made, and report sent, if heard of.

On 23rd u l t , the inquest on body of John Moore was continued, and verdict returned, that " On the 18th day of March, 1876, at the Hospital in Bunbury, John Moore died from dysentery."

Marks—mole left cheek, lost | several upper front teeth ; has an impediment in his i speech.

At the Quarter Sessions, held at Geraldton, on 1st March, t.L, Reg. No. 8051, Thomas Leonard; charged with larceny from the premises of Richard Lucas. Verdict—Not guilty.

THOMAS LOCKETT, exp.; charged with wilful and corrupt perjury. Verdict—Guilty, with recommend­ation to mercy. Sentenced to 3 years' p.s. Geraldton Police to report late Reg. No.

Marks—Anchor and J right a r m ; sailor and mermaid left arm ; a carpenter ; has a spot size of haU crown on left side of head void of ha i r ; has been in Eoyal Navy ; an Engl ishman ; walks with a quick short step, turns r ight foot outward. Absconded, from Convict Boat Par ty , Fremantle , on the 16th December, 1870, and is believed he went overland to South Australia with Bernard Stein in October, 1874.

4. J O H N C A E T E E , Eeg. No. 9683, Imperial Convict; arrived in the Colony per convict ship Hougoumont , 1868, under sentence of 15 years p.s., l l t h June , 1866. Description—Middling stout, present age 34, 5ft. 4 | i n . high, dark bro-\vn hair, grey eyes, th in visage, fresh complexion. Marks—Scar on right th igh, several small scars on back; a painter. Absconded from York Convict Road Par ty , on the 2nd February, 1871.

Description—Slight, present age 69, 5ft. 3 | i n . high, grey hair, grey eyes, round visage, dark com­plexion; a laborer. Absconded from Nor tham Convict Eoad Par ty on the l l t h Ju ly , 1871, last heard of at DeBurgh ' s , Moore Eiver.

Description—Stout, present age 39, 5ft-2in. high, black hair, black eyes, round visage, swarthy complexion ; a laborer. Absconded from Freshwater Bay Eoad Party on the 10th May, 1873.

8. JOHN or JAMES KEAENS, Eeg. No. 10097, Colonial Convict; under sentence of 5 years p.s., at Albany, on the 19th February, 1873, his Imperial Eeg. No. was 7747, sentence 6 years p.s., on the 7th May, 1861. Description—Stout, present age 39, 5ft. 4in. high, brown hair, oval visage, dark complexion. Marks—Bayonet stab in neck, D left side, buUet mark on right leg, willow left arm, J. right arm; a laborer. Absconded from Point Eesolution Eoad Party on the 10th August, 1873.

9. HENEY PAEKENSON, Eeg. No. 8674, Imperial Convict; arrived in the Colony per convict ship Vimiera, December, 1865, reconvicted for larcenies in this Colony. Description—MiddUng stout, present age 36, 5ft. 6|in. high, brown hair, grey eyes, oval visage, fresh complexion. Marks—Dot and H on left arm; a laborer. Absconded from North Fre­mantle Depot on the 8th March, 1874, believed to be in or near Perth.

The watch and chain in question were found in the house the prisoners occupied, by L.C. Connor and P.C. Farmer . Remanded tUl the 7th, and then discharged.

Property Found, On 2nd inst., about 1 mile from Geraldton,—a

parcel containing revolver, powder flask, box caps, box pills, and bottle sweet nitre. Believed to belong to John Tucker, exp., who purchased simUar articles in Geraldton; Tucker is notified.

On 30th ult., at the 4-mile gully from Moorumbine, Beverley, concealed under a log,—a steelyard, weigh­ing up to 2601bs. The steelyard is identical with one stolen from E. G. B. Lennard, of Wandering, in June or July, 1866 ; and at that time a warrant was granted to search the premises of John Boxhall, free, but with no success. Boxhall was cutting sandal­wood near the place the steelyard was found, at the time it was stolen. Now at'Beverley Police Station.

Miscellaneous. On the night of the 1st inst., a dray loaded with

sandalwood, the property of George Gale, Northam j district, was burnt, together with the harness, which was hanging on the shafts of the dray. From enquiry, the police attribute the accident to careless­ness, the dray was about 200 yards from Gale's house. Gale suspected John Hitchcock, a neighbour.

Absconded from Albany, whilst at large on a Conditional Eelease, on the 8th January, 1865, supposed to have escaped in American Whaler, Young Phoenix.

11. WILLIAM LEIGH alias FRANK KELLY alias WILLIAM .LEE, Eeg. No. 9964, Colonial Convict; (Imp. Eeg. No. 6033); arrived in the Colony per con­vict ship Lincelles, January, 1862 ; reconvicted at the Supreme Court, Perth, 7th October, 1869, sentenced to 7 years p.s. Description—Stout, present age 39, 5ft. 3^in. high, fresh complexion. Marks —Heart on palm of left hand, cut on left hand, black spots on left arm; a glover and tailor. Absconded from Freshwater Bay Convict Eoad Party on the 13th March, 1875, believed to have been on the Swan two months ago.

Deserting Wives, Families, Service, &c. JBEUP alias WALTEE, ab. native. Description—

Slight, about 16 years of age, 5 feet high, round visage; is charged, on warrant issued at York, on 8th inst., with deserting from the service of Henry Mears, York.

WADGEL, ab. native. Description—About 30 years old, 5ft. 3 or 4in. high, black and curly hair, round visage; is charged, on warrant issued at Beverley, the 31st ult., with deserting from the service of Alfred Eobins, Bally Bally, on 24th ult.

Inquests. On 21st ult., by Eesident Magistrate of the

Williams Eiver, at Moodearup,_ Arthur Eiver on the body of Herbert Charles Thwaites a boy of 7 or years, who was drowned on the 18th ult., m a T- 'I on premises of John Dearie a farmer, wich whom Thwaites was living. V e r d i c t - Acadentally drowned." This boy was the son of Samuel ihwaites, of Perth.

On 6th inst., by Eesident Magistrate, Fremantle, on the body of Jeremiah Horrigan, pensioner, who was found dead in his bed, on the morning of the 5th inst. Verdict—" Died from fatty degeneration of the heart." / '

On 28th ult., by Eesident Magistrate, Geraldton, on the body of William Curran, Con. Pardon, late Eeg. No. 3605, who died at Knock Brack on 26tli ult . ; inquest adjourned till the 4th April. Verdict— " Died from effects of strychnine, administered by himself, while in a state of unsound mind."

On 10th inst., by the Eesident Magistrate, Fre­mantle, on the body of Michael McLaughlan, Pensioner, of the Enrolled Force, who died suddenly at H. M. Lefroy's vineyard, on the afternoon of 9th inst. Verdict—" Died from disease of the heart."

No. 15, the following rule will be observed by the PoHce throughout the Colony:— W h e n a W a r r a n t for the apjjrehension of any person has been issued by a Magistrate a t any Station, the Police Officer or Constable in charge of such Station will forward to each Police Station in the Colony, iand to the Detective Office in Per th , a copy of such W a r r a n t , countersigned by himself, at taching to the Copy W a r r a n t the Form No. 198, giving an accurate description of the person required to be apprehended.

Arrests in all cases can be effected by the Police on such Copy War ran t s .

Officers in charge of Divisions will see tha t the Police in their Divisions make themselves acquainted with the provisions of the above Ordinance.

2. JOHN O 'EEILLY, Eeg. No. 9843, Imperial Con­vict; arrived in the Colony per convict ship Hougoumont, in 1868; sentenced to 20 years, 9th July, 1866. Description—Healthy appearance, pre­sent age 30, 5ft. 6in. high, black hair, brown eyes, oval visage, dark complexion; an Irishman. Absconded from Convict Eoad Party, Bunbury, on the 18th February, 1869.

3. WILLIAM GOODLAND aZias B ILL ATTEL, Eeg. No. 8269, Imperial Convict; arrived in the Colony per convict ship Eacehorse, 1865, under sentence of 20 years, p.s., March, 1863. Description—Stout, broad shoulders, present age 34, 5ft. 7|in. high, dark brown hair, bald, light hazel eyes, long visage, fair com­plexion. Marks—Anchor and J right arm; sailor and mermaid left arm; a carpenter; has a spot size of half crown on left side of head void of hair; has been in Eoyal Navy ; an Englishman ; walks with a quick short step, turns right foot outward. Absconded from Convict Boat Party, Fremantle, on the 16th December, 1870, and is believed he went overland to South Australia with Bernard Stein in October, 1874.

4. JOHN CAETEE, Eeg. No. 9683, Imperial Convict; arrived in the Colony per convict ship Hougoumout, 1868, under sentence of 15 years p.s., l l t h June, 1866. Description—Middling stout, present age 34, 5ft. 4 | in. high, dark brown hair, grey eyes, thin visage, fresh complexion. Marks—Scar on right thigh, several small scars on back; a painter. Absconded from York Convict Eoad Party, on the 2nd February, 1871.

5. JAMES BAKEE, Eeg. No. 9068, Imperial Con­vict ; arrived in the Colony per convict ship Corona, 1866, under sentence of 15 years p.s., 25th March, 1865. Description—Slight, present age 69, 5ft. 3|m. high, grey hair, grey eyes, round visage, dark com­plexion; a laborer. Absconded from Northam Convict Eoad Party on the l l t h July, 1871, last heard of at DeBurgh's, Moore Eiver.

6. HENEY BEADBUEY, Eeg. No. 5979, Imperial Convict; arrived in the Colony per convict ship Lincelles, January, 1862. Description—Stout, pre­sent age 35, 5ft. 5|in. high, light brown hair, light hazel eyes, long visage, fresh complexion; a butcher. Absconded from Convict Boat Party, Fremantle, on the 3rd April, 1872.

7. DENNIS MANNING, Eeg. No. 9513, Imperial' Convict; arrived in the Colony per convict ship Norwood, July, 1867 ; sentenced to 10 years in 1866, but received additional sentences in this Colony for larceny. Description—Stout, present age 39, 5ft. 2in. high, black hair, black eyes, round visage, swarthy complexion ; a laborer. Absconded from Freshwater Bay Eoad Party on the 10th May, 1873.

8. JOHN or JAMES KEAENS, Eeg. No. 10097, Colomal Convict; under sentence of 5 years p.s., at Albany, on the 19th February, 1873, his Imperial Eeg. No. was 7747, sentence 6 years p.s., on the 7th May, 1861. Description—Stout, present age 39 5ft 4in.high brown hair oval visage, dark completion: . of ab. natives Tommy Kickett, and Tommy Dabbar, for feloniously spearing ab. nat. Billy Aram, in the belly and side, with intent to kill and murder. Billy Aram has since died. Tommy Kickett has been arrested at Tipperary, York District, by P.C. Pridmore, on the 13tb inst., and is remanded on a charge of murder. Tommy Dabbar, is stout, about 40 years; about 5ft. 7in., and full visage.

Circular Orders and Miscellaneous Information.

CO. 7«i.—In accordance with the provisions of the Ordinance 39 Vic. No. 15, the following rule will be observed by the Police throughout the Colony:— When a Warrant for the apprehension of any person has been issued by a Magistrate at any Station, the Police Officer or Constable in charge of such Station will forward to each Police Station in the Colony, and to the Detective Office in Perth, a copy of such Warrant, countersigned by himself, attaching to the Copy Warrant the Form No. 198, giving an accurate description of the person reij^uired to be apprehended.

Arrests in all cases can be efi'ected by the Police on such Copy Warrants.

Officers in charge of Divisions will see that the Police ill their Divisions make themselves acquainted with the provisions of the above Ordinance.

Dates are omitted, surnames are entered without christian names, in entries of offences no description is given of the persons implicated, the Eeg. No. of Convicts is omitted, &c., &c. The attention of Officers in charge of Divisions is called to this, as it is essential that all entries should be as accurate as possible.

Queries for the ftiture on the entries in the Occurrence Sheets, and on all Criminal Informations, will be made through the Detective Office by order of«the Superintendent of Police, and forwarded to Officers in charge of Divisions.

Such Queries are to be promptly attended to.

All Telegrams received or forwarded are to be entered in lull in the Occurrence Sheets.

On 1st inst;, from the tent of Alfred Pane, at the Wheal Ellen Mine, Gwalla District,—a new saddle and stirrup leather; identifiable. No description sent.—C.I. 58.

On 19th inst., from the house of Mr. Lefroy, Premantle,—five .£1 W.A. Bank Notes, a card box containing valuable documents ; the notes have since been found hid in the house, one of them being torn in two. A Mrs. Coffin susi)ected.—C.L 59.

On 19th inst., from the premises of Mrs. Walker, Barrack Street, Perth,—three pairs of men's socks, brown and white circles, marked J. Forrest. An emigrant named Haslock, suspected.—C.L 60.

On or about 2nd January, from Jarrahdale timber station, the property of John Mackness,—small writing desk, 5 blankets, counterpane, pair tweed trowsers, white waistcoat, 2 piUows and pillow cases, pair kid gloves, and scissors. Alexander Carey, exp., who is at present undergoing' two sentences 'of 6 months' cumulative at Perth prison suspected. AU identifiable. No description serd.—C.L 63.

Burglary and Housebreaking. On night of 17th inst., the Vasse Hotel, Vasse,

occupied by J. Mewett, was broken into, by a hole i being made in the wall, large enough to allow a man ' to pass through ; a cheese and bottle of ginger Avine was stolen; it is supposed that the thieves were disturbed, a quantity of liquor being packed up, ready for taking away. Joseph Jamieson, exp., arrested on suspicion, but discharged on 19th inst. From information received, Thomas Murphy alias Doyle, exp., was arrested on the above charge.

"Warrants Issued. MONKEY alias SOUP, ab. nat., is charged, on

warrant issued at Geraldton, on 10th inst., with assaulting John Cox, near Yuin, on or about 1st March, with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Description—Middling stout, about 30 years about 5ft. 5 | in.; oval visage; slightly pockmarked about the nose ; is a Tailoring native.
