TMD Arranges a Workshop about “Oil Spill”

On March 2018 ,28-27, the Terminal and Marine Department (TMD) in Khafji

Joint Operations (KJO) arranged a training workshop about oil spills and how to deal with them, at KJO Office Park. The purpose of the workshop is to provide the employees working in offshore operations

and oil spill response team with information and skills about the methods of dealing and responding to oil spills. The workshop was arranged, upon request from Saudi Aramco, as an initial step before initiating the joint drill between KJO and Saudi Aramco, which is scheduled in mid-

April 2018. The workshop dealt with oil spill, environment contaminated with oil, types of oil spills and the methods of controlling the same, as well as the international plans and specialized equipment and tools used for controlling oil spills; including booms for confining spill

areas, skimmers for collecting and removing oil spills, and special containers for storage. The workshop dealt also with other methods for controlling oil spills, depending on the size of spills, and how to use chemicals, after taking the approval of concerned authorities, to deal with such situations.

TDD-English Language section relaunched its first extra-curricular

afternoon activity program by introducing a general English language competency based competition implementing the concept of “Gamification”. Gamification means the process of adding games or game-like elements to education so as to encourage participation, and it has become a tendency in online learning and in professional development for educators. According to the NMC Horizon Report (2014), Gamification is building support in teachers and the time of adoption is around two to three years. The report established clearly that: “the Gamification

of education is gaining support among educators who recognize that effectively designed games can stimulate large gains in productivity and creativity among learners”.Multiple Online Role-Playing Games have increased in popularity among adults within in this digital age. Online language proficiency games can be applied to enhancing language learning, which is drawing researchers’ attention from different fields and many studies have validated positive effect on language learning. ELP introduced its first Online-Role-Play Gaming activity for students of all levels and teachers to interact in English in a

relaxed and focused way outside of the traditional classroom environment. Using the new online smartphone based educational game called ‘Kahoot!’, which is becoming a great hit with trainers and trainees in schools and learning centers all around the world. Essentially, multiple-choice questions are projected onto a screen and players answer by pressing the right answer on their smart phones. ELP invited students from levels 2 ,1 and 6 and divided them into two mixed teams containing members from each level; with subject knowledge varying general knowledge to grammar. The programme covers general knowledge

to carter for all KJO employees, something to suit everyone whether their passion is grammar, geography or football. Not only does it test trainee’s English and knowledge, it also tests their teamwork and reflexes as a fraction of a second makes all the difference in which team gets the point.Another benefit of this game is that TDD trainers can create bespoke quizzes specifically testing KJO employees on their knowledge of KJO and Khafji. In conclusion, the game was a great success and we anticipate that the afternoon activities program will be very popular and beneficial to trainers and trainees in the future of ELP.

| Management | As a boss, you’re probably doing all you can to help your team perform

at its best. If you’re like some of the most successful leaders (which I hope you are!), you’re focused on setting challenging goals, running effective meetings, and using best practices for delegation.Still, as you fine-tune your management style, there’s one powerful habit you may be overlooking:Focusing on how much you energize the people around you.Although you might think of energy as something that your employees either have or don’t (a.k.a., whether they got enough sleep the night before), the reality is that as a leader, you play a critical role in how motivated they are on a daily basis. So, how do you become a more energizing leader? You can get started by working on these four things:

4 WAYS YOU CAN

MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM

TO DO BETTER WORK

(MORE OFTEN)

1) Be Aware Of Your SurroundingsThis step requires knowing the particular hazards of your job or workplace. Once you’ve learned these risks, you are able to keep clear of potential hazardous areas, and potential hazardous situations. Also, always be alert of machinery.2) Keep Correct Posture To Protect Your BackIf you work at a desk, keep your shoulders in line with your hips to avoid back problems. If you’re picking things up, use correct form so your back doesn’t get hurt. Avoid stooping and twisting. If possible, always use ergonomic designed furniture and safety equipment so everything you need is within easy reach.3) Take Regular BreaksSo many work-related injuries and illnesses occur because a worker is tired, burned out and not alert to their surroundings. Taking regular breaks helps you stay fresh on the job. One trick to staying alert is to schedule the most difficult tasks when your concentration is best, like first thing in the morning.4) Use Tools And Machines ProperlyTake the proper precautions when using tools, and never take shortcuts. Taking shortcuts is one of the leading cause of workplace injury. It’s a huge safety risk to use scaffolding as a ladder or one tool in place of another for a specific job. Using tools the right way greatly reduces the chance of workplace injury.5) Keep Emergency Exits Easily AccessibleIn case of an emergency, you’ll need quick, easy access to the exits. It’s also recommended to keep clear access to equipment shutoffs in case you need to quickly stop them from functioning.6) Report Unsafe Conditions To Your SupervisorYour supervisor needs to be informed about any workplace safety hazards or risks. They are legally obligated to ensure their

employees have a safe working environment and will take care of the unsafe conditions and make them safe for you and your coworkers.7) Use Mechanical Aids Whenever PossibleInstead of attempting to carry or lift something that’s really heavy in an attempt to save a sliver of time during your workday, take the extra minute to use a wheelbarrow, conveyor belt, crank or forklift. Too many injury risks are involved with trying to lift something that weighs too much.8) Stay SoberAround three percent of workplace fatalities occur due to alcohol and drugs. When a worker’s ability to exercise judgment, coordination, motor control, concentration or alertness is compromised, this leads to any number of risks for workplace injury and fatalities.9) Reduce Workplace StressStress can lead to depression and concentration problems. Common causes of workplace stress include long hours, heavy workload, job insecurity and conflicts with coworkers or managers. Take your concerns about workplace stress to your supervisor to see how they might help you address them.10) Wear The Correct Safety EquipmentIf you’re not wearing the correct safety equipment for a task, you may get injured. Depending on the job, equipment like earplugs, earmuffs, hard hats, safety goggles, gloves or a full-face mask greatly reduce the risk of workplace injury. It’s up to facility managers and business owners to get their employees onboard with workplace safety efforts, encouraging them to become active members in the process. Share with them the workplace injury statistics and the inherent risks their job presents to them on a daily basis. Provide incentives that reward them for exemplifying great workplace safety behavior. These simple initiatives really do make all of the difference.

Workplace safety cannot exist on best practice guidelines and policies alone. A safe working environment is based on how well the people, in

both management and on the factory floor, adhere to — and communicate about — safety standards. The foundation of any successful workplace safety effort is one that encourages employees to identify unsafe behaviors and opportunities for improvement while also making well-informed safety decisions during daily routine tasks.Copy of Shocking Costs Electrical Incidents.pngHere’s the Top 10 Workplace Safety Tips Every Employee Should Know to help you inform your own workers and create a workplace safety environment based on shared responsibility:

Visit Greenland on the right summer day, and you could see a -12billion-gallon lake disappear before

your very eyes.Glaciologists saw this happen for the first time in 2006, when a -2.2square-mile (5.6 square kilometers) lake of melted ice drained away into nothing in less than 2 hours. Researchers now see such events as a regular part of Greenland›s increasingly hot summer routine; every year, thousands of temporary lakes pop up on Greenland›s surface as the surrounding ice melts, sit around for a few weeks or months, and then suddenly drain away through cracks in the ice sheet underneath.

[Images of Melt: Earth›s Vanishing Ice]On a recent expedition, however, researchers saw an alarming new pattern behind Greenland›s mysterious disappearing lakes: They›re starting to drain farther and farther inland. According to a new paper published today (March 14) in the journal Nature Communications, that›s because the summer lakes of Greenland drain in a «cascading» chain reaction enabled by a vast, interconnected web of cracks below the ice — and as temperatures climb, the web is getting wider.«Lakes that drain in one area produce fractures that cause more lakes to drain somewhere elsewhere,» co-author Marion Bougamont, a glaciologist at the University of Cambridge›s Scott Polar Research Institute, said in a statement. «It all adds up when you look at the pathways of water underneath the ice.»In the new paper, Bougamont and her colleagues used 3D ice-flow models and satellite images of the Greenland Ice Sheet to study this chain reaction. The authors found that when warming weather causes a single lake to drain into the underlying ice sheet, the ice flow below that lake can accelerate dramatically — up to 400 percent faster than in winter months. As the draining water surges away from the original lake, it can destabilize other nearby ice beds. Fresh cracks form, new lakes drain and the reaction intensifies day by day. In one incident, the researchers observed 124 lakes drain in just five days. Even lakes that formed hundreds of kilometers inland, which were previously thought to be too far removed from the ice bed to drain into it, proved vulnerable to the chain-drain-reaction as new fissures in the ice formed. This all amounts to billions of gallons of melted ice plunging below Greenland›s surface every few days. Some of this water remains trapped in the ice sheet; much of it pours into the surrounding ocean.«This ice sheet, which covers 1.7 million square kilometers [650,000 square miles], was relatively stable 25 years ago, but now loses one billion tons [900 million metric tons] of ice every day,» lead author Poul Christoffersen, also from Cambridge›s Scott Polar Research Institute, said in the statement. «This causes one millimeter of global sea level rise per year, a rate which is much faster than what was predicted only a few years ago.»According to a 2017 report, ice loss in Greenland was responsible for about 25 percent of global sea level rise in 2014 — up from just 5 percent in 1993.If Greenland melts completely, it could result in a global sea-level rise of about 20 feet (6 meters). According to the Cambridge researchers, a total loss of Greenland›s ice is «extremely unlikely in this century» — but even minor increases in sea level could have severe consequences around the world, the authors noted. According to a recent report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), if sea levels rise half a meter (1.6 feet) by 2100, many American coastal cities will experience high-tide flooding «every other day» or more.

1. Exude a Positive AttitudeThere’s a wealth of research out there about the benefits of an optimistic attitude for effective leadership. You probably didn’t need science to tell you that—after all, it makes sense that someone who’s upbeat would be a lot more exciting to be around compared to someone who’s always complaining. So, make a concerted effort on a regular basis to be supportive, gracious, and optimistic. For example, when you disagree with your direct report, don’t just shoot their idea down—instead, respect their opinion and strive to find common ground. When problems arise, focus on what you can fix rather than lamenting about all the things you can’t. Try to stay positive in everything you do, and your can-do spirit will be contagious.2. Get to Know Your Direct Reports on a Human LevelEnergizing leaders don’t just tell people what to do—they focus on cultivating strong, two-way relationships with the people they work with. They take a genuine interest in others’ emotions, concerns, and happiness, and aim to be fully present when talking with them (a.k.a., they care about how they communicate.)Most importantly, they know how to show a bit of vulnerability—

because they know that being honest, realistic, and accountable for their actions forces others to do the same.3. Share Your Passion With Your TeamHave you ever had a boss who was simply going through the motions without much care for anything they did? It was probably an uphill battle to be productive when your leader wasn’t pulling their weight and showing enthusiasm for their role.Researchers in their study found that leaders who showed passion for their work were more motivating and energizing to be around. So, aim to get in touch with what makes your job meaningful to you. Then, communicate this excitement with your employees by sharing your personal goals, projects you’re eager to work on, or the mission you, your department, or your company stands for. The more transparent you are with the “why” behind everything you do, the more likely people will be convinced to get excited and involved.4. Make Learning a PriorityThe study also shows that energizing leaders create environments that’re intellectually stimulating. This means sharing your knowledge and experience with your team and being open to learning from others and receiving feedback.

This also means encouraging open

dialogue, creativity, and the questioning of assumptions. A team that engages in frequent, honest conversations is also likely to generate higher quality solutions to problems, since they’ll be able to truly benefit from and factor in all of the individual perspectives.

A unit of force equal to one billionth of a trillionth of a newton.

An itty-bitty object can be used to suss out teeny-weeny forces.

Scientists used an atom of the element ytterbium to sense an electromagnetic force smaller than 100 zeptonewtons, researchers report online March 23 in Science Advances. That’s less than 0.0000000000000000001 newtons — with, count ‘em, 18 zeroes after the decimal. At about the same strength as the gravitational pull between a person in Dallas and another in Washington, D.C., that’s downright feeble. After removing one of the atom’s electrons, researchers trapped the atom using electric fields and cooled it to less than a thousandth of a degree above absolute zero (–°273.15 Celsius) by hitting it with laser light. That light, counterintuitively, can cause an atom to chill out. The laser also makes the atom glow, and scientists focused that light into an image with a miniature Fresnel lens, a segmented lens like those used to focus lighthouse beams.

Monitoring the motion of the atom’s image allowed the researchers to study how the atom responded to electric fields, and to measure the minuscule force caused by particles of light scattering off the atom, a measly 95 zeptonewtons.

A SINGLE ATOM CAN GAUGE TEENSY ELECTROMAGNETIC

FORCES

FEEBLE FORCE Scientists detected a tiny force using a charged atom (illustrated as a red sphere), which moved (orange) when pelted with laser light (purple). A lens focused light emitted from the atom into a moving image (black arrow).

As smartphones and other digital devices get smarter and more numerous — and as the applications they run generate

ever more data — the wireless network that connects them must change to keep pace. That’s why telecommunications giants like Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are racing to roll out the fifth generation of wireless network technology.Although some have criticized 5G for its high projected cost, there›s wide agreement that the emerging technology will bring faster, more reliable connections for users. It could also provide the extra bandwidth needed to create what›s being called the “Internet of Things” — a network that links not just phones and computers but also robots, cars, and all manner of sensor-equipped consumer products and infrastructure.5G could even usher in a new era of “smart cities” in which energy grids, traffic signals, and emergency services are linked to reduce inefficiencies.

WHAT IS 5G?The fifth generation of mobile communication networks. Most consumers now use 3G or 4G/LTE networks, which were introduced to the public in 2001 and 2009, respectively. AT&T shuttered its 2G system in early 2017. Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint have said they’ll continue to operate their 2G networks through 2020 ,2019, and 2021, respectively.

WHAT ADVANTAGES WILL 5G OFFER?Each new generation of wireless technology has brought faster, more reliable cellular and internet connections. In the 1980›s, first-generation technology made communication via cellphone possible. The next generation, 2G, allowed for more efficient and secure phone calls, and introduced mobile text messaging. 3G ushered in the smartphone era, and 4G/LTE gave us the high-speed connections that make it possible to stream high-definition video on our phones.

5G IS PROJECTED TO BRING THREE MAIN BENEFITS:Faster speed: Data transfer speeds are projected to be about 10 times higher with 5G than is possible with 4G. That means significantly faster transmission of images and videos. With 4G/LTE, downloading a high-definition movie might take about 10 minutes. With 5G, it should take less than a second.Shorter delays: Though it’s not always noticeable, there is often a brief lag in time from when data is sent to when it’s received. 5G should reduce this so-called latency, making it possible, for example, to watch high-speed virtual reality video with no delays or glitches.Increased connectivity: Cell towers equipped with 5G technology would have greatly increased capacity over 4G/LTE. That means more people — and more devices — should be able to communicate at the same time.WILL I NEED A NEW PHONE?Just as 2G phones couldn’t connect to 3G or 4G networks, today’s 3G and 4G/LTE phones will be unable to connect to a 5G network. So experts predict you’ll need a new phone. The cost of a 5G phone is unclear, but monthly 5G service is likely to cost more than 4G/LTE service.WHEN WILL 5G BE AVAILABLE?Samsung and Intel debuted 5G technology at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, where it was used to stream live VR coverage of sporting events. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon are continuing to develop and test 5G technology and expect 5G service to be available in some U.S. cities later this year. Access to 5G is expected to expand dramatically in 2019.

It›s really quite astonishing that

more research and development isn›t being done in the area of water-borne housing: 71 percent of the Earth›s surface is water, the world›s already overcrowded population will grow from 7 to 9 billion in the next 20 years, 75 percent of the world›s megacities are on the water ... the numbers all point towards greater utilization of water as the basis for housing in prime locations.Naval architect Maxim Zhivov and the Baikal Yacht Group have come up with the HydroHouse, an...The HydroHouse is transportable by truck, meaning that it really does offer a relocatable lifestyle for...Another of Zhivov›s innovative houseboats is the Houseboat Moon, a houseboat for long term accommodation that...The floorplan of the HydroHouseThrow in the spectre of global warming submerging the most valuable terra firma first, and the fact that there are countless architects exploring the possibilities of sustainable living environments on land ... and houseboats make more sense with every passing day.Perhaps because of the deeply personal nature of one›s home, housing design is one of the great engineering art forms and the combination of designer Maxim Zhivov and the Baikal Yacht Group has been comprehensively exploring this area for some time.

It›s not often that naval architects think way outside the box, and even less common for major shipyards to follow that lead, but when Zhivov and Baikal Yacht Group came up with the HydroHouse, they were clearly exploring new boundaries.Naval architect Maxim Zhivov and the Baikal Yacht Group has come up with the HydroHouse, an...

The HydroHouse is a combination houseboat, dock and seaplane mooring, and the entire thing is transportable by truck, meaning that it really does offer a relocatable lifestyle for pilots and water enthusiasts.Zhivov›s resume is chock full of ideas that transform the houseboat concept to offer more than one primary benefit, and many of his designs in his short career have centered around houseboats that offer particular lifestyles, or are particularly suitable for a specific lifestyle. At least part of the inspiration for the HydroHouse comes from one of his previous concepts, the Houseboat Moon, a houseboat for long term accommodation that doubles as a relocatable wharf.Another of Zhivov›s innovative houseboats is the Houseboat Moon, a houseboat for long term accommodation that...The size and modular construction of the Houseboat Moon were created so that the houseboat could be easily transported via truck.
