    The 31 rules are divided into 6 parts complied by the

    International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea(SOLAS) and are known as International Regulations for

    Preventing Collision at Sea, or as the Rule of the road.

    The lights laid down to be carried under the Rule of the

    Road serve two purposes:

    Navigation- lights are so designed that other ship

    sighting them can tell reasonably accurately the course

    of the vessel

    Other lights-indicate the type of vessel and her

    employment.

    signals

    Sound signals are used in fog or restricted visibility:

    -one prolonged blast every 2 minutes when she is making way through

    the water

    -two prolonged blast every 2 minutes when she is underway but

    stopped

    -a vessel anchored rings her bell rapidly for 5 seconds every 2 minutesPart
