I believe Northern Stage has an obligation to provide our audiences with extraordinary theater. We have come so far in so few years in our new, state-of-the-art Barrette Center for the Arts. Our audiences have doubled, our educational programs are exceeding expectations, and we are receiving national recognition for our groundbreaking new play development, BridgeUP: Theater in the Schools residencies, and as the leader of the unprecedented BOLD Theater Women’s Leadership Circle.

My dream for Northern Stage is that we become your favorite place to experience live theater. Season selection is always about you, our audience members, and what it will take to delight you, entertain you, and give you something you cannot find anywhere else. Our hallmark is the highest quality theater of grand scale in a uniquely intimate setting.

I chose this season around the themes of peace and love in response to a rapidly changing world. Theater provides a place to think, feel, and leave the distractions of our highly technological world behind. It is a respite. What better way to kick off the 2018-19 Season than with Oslo, J.T. Rogers’ exhilarating look at the back-channel talks that led to the Oslo Peace Accords of 1993. Starting with this boldly portrayed story of peace and ending with the beautiful Broadway hit Once, this is a season to inspire hope and joy.

I am so proud of our artists and administrators who work tirelessly to create art that can rival any stage anywhere. Their connection with our audience members is paramount to the success of our work, and we are thrilled for you to get to know them through our various talkbacks and events. Thank you for making Northern Stage part of your life. Come to one show, come to them all. We’re thrilled to take you on an unforgettable journey.

A BENEFIT FOR NORTSEPTEMBER 8, 7:0

JANUARY 12 – FEBRUARY 24AT 59E59 THEATERS, NEW YORK CITYBy Jack Neary, Directed by Carol Dunne

First seen at Northern Stage in our 2016 New Works Now festival and later presented as a world premiere production in 2017, Trick or Treat continues its journey with a New York premiere at 59E59 Theaters this winter as the second Off-Broadway transfer in Northern Stage’s history.

Jack Neary’s dark comedy brilliantly skewers a family in crisis on Halloween. A distraught husband, a nosy neighbor, and a dark secret set the wheels in motion for a night of confrontation, mystery, and relentless suspense. This roller-coaster ride stars NYPD Blue’s Gordon Clapp.

Fresh from Broadway and the West End, the regional premiere of this stunning new play will captivate audiences. Inspired by the true story of the back-channel talks, unlikely friendships, and quiet heroics that led to the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords between the Israelis and Palestinians, Oslo is a deeply personal story set against a complex historical canvas, a story about the individuals behind world history and their all-too-human ambitions. Oslo is “thrilling, a colossus,” raves Ben Brantley of The New York Times. At this cultural moment when finding common ground is paramount, “Oslo gives us hope” (Joe Dziemianowicz, Daily News).

A tale of love and longing, Dear Elizabeth follows the beautiful and bittersweet friendship between Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell. Across oceans, continents, and three decades, these esteemed poets found a marriage of true minds in their eloquent correspondence. They traded hundreds of vibrant, witty, and passionate letters that now spring to life on stage. This intimate story paints a portrait of two extraordinary—and quite ordinary—lives.

This production will feature a rotating cast of artists. Susan Haefner (Broadway: State Fair, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Northern Stage: Noises Off, Mamma Mia!, Mary Poppins) and David Mason (Northern Stage: Noises Off, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Trick or Treat) will perform October 4 - 14. Northern Stage’s own Producing Artistic Director Carol Dunne (Northern Stage: Songs for a New World, Lend Me a Tenor, Cats, Private Lives) and Thom Miller (Northern Stage: The Hound of the Baskervilles, Mad Love, Boeing Boeing) will perform October 17 - 28.

MAGICAL FUN FOR THE FAMILY

A regional premiere, this recent Tony Award-winner follows the struggles of Matilda against her neglectful parents and cruel headmistress. An avid reader and brilliant young girl, Matilda dreams of a better life and a happy home. With the help of her kind teacher Miss Honey, along with the students in her class and a touch of wonderfully theatrical magic, she takes a stand against the evil forces that surround her. The addictively raucous score and Roald Dahl’s endless creativity propel this heartwarming story of a little girl who finds power in education and imagination.

When Julie, married mother of three, unexpectedly leaves her husband and moves in with her mother Cora, she’s shocked at what she finds in her childhood home. Insults, galoshes, and English muffins fly as the women fight for control of Cora’s life and Julie comes to grips with her own mid-life crisis. Playwright Marisa Smith, the creative mind behind 2016’s hit Mad Love, is back with a hilarious and deeply perceptive story of aging gracefully—or sometimes not so gracefully—and how we try to care for one another in the face of life’s challenges. Smith brings to bear her signature brand of humor and acuteness of language to leave us laughing and crying all at once. Northern Stage is proud to present another world premiere production nurtured through New Works Now.

Alex More has a story to tell. A struggling actor in L.A., he takes a job working in the Malibu basement mini-mall of beloved megastar Barbra Streisand. One day, the star herself comes downstairs to play. It feels like real bonding in the basement, but will their relationship ever make it upstairs? Buyer & Cellar is an outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things, and the oddest of odd jobs. The production will feature our own Director of Education Eric Love.

Winner of eight Tony Awards, Once is a truly original theatrical experience. Based on the hit movie, and featuring an ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments on stage, Once tells the enchanting story of a Dublin street musician who is about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. A musical collaboration becomes much more as their songs and lives become intertwined. Hansard and Irglová’s Oscar-winning music will take audiences on a heartbreakingly romantic journey.
