• Lack of/incompleteness of data• Inconsistency of data• Imprecision of measurement• Imprecision of concept• Combination of information from multiple

sources• Lack of fundamental supporting theory

Illustration of uncertainty

• Truly random situation (e.g. motion of gas molecules, distribution of people’s height)

• Situation which are not random but for which there are insufficient data (e.g. the likelihood a person has appendices)

• Situation whether the knowledge involved represents an intuitive feeling)

• Situation where the terminology involved is vague (e.g. description such as large, tall, big)

• Situation where the sources of knowledge is not totally reliable (e.g. someone who is honest but absent minded)
