I n s p I r I n g t h e n e x t g e n e r at I o n

I first started playing for the Howe when the Ladies team was sti l l very much just a ‘keep fit’ session for the mums of the S3s who were training at the same time. To have been part of its growth to where it is now, is a huge honour, I am so proud of all the girls in National 1.

The Howe Harlequins was my first experience of playing senior level rugby, I am very grateful that I have been involved in such a friendly, open and dedicated team. It is fantastic to see the club introducing U18, U15 and U12 teams. So often there is nowhere for girls to go after minis, so it can be easy to lose interest in the game.

Howe Harlequins offer training for players of all abil it ies, and welcome anyone regardless of their experience or skil l . Joining a team is a great way of finding friends, especially if you are new to the area, and the Howe is a bril l iant team to join. Although no longer playing for Howe, I am welcomed to training as if I have never been away, whenever I’m home, and that is testament to the nature of this club.

I have a lot to thank the Howe for. Firstly, giving my Dad a game. Because it was down cheering him on at Duffus, I got my first taste of rugby. I used to love watching Dad and wanted to be just l ike him. It kick started my fascination for the game.

Looking back on my time at Howe, although our teams had some incredible seasons and won lots of games, it was the fun I had, and the great friends I made that stand out as a highlight. 10 years later myself, Chris Fusaro, Steve Wilson, Chris Mason, Robbie Will iamson and Stewart Lathangie are sti l l as thick as thieves, any time we get together it’s l ike nothing’s changed. For any young person the Howe offers today what we all experienced. The chance to excel and enjoy rugby in the company of friends.

The Howe has always been full of fantastic people who put the interests of the club before their own. Something unique in today’s world.

It doesn’t matter how long it’s been. Whenever you head back its’ great to see all the same faces welcoming you with a smile.

The Howe of Fife will always hold a very special place in my heart.

I have been playing rugby with the Howe for 4 years after attending a holiday rugby camp to try it out. And had the best time. I love scoring tries and being with my friends. I also love tackling. Playing for the Howe is bril l iant but tough. It’s l ike having another family. The positive experience at Howe; meeting some of my best friends, learning about fitness, teamwork and being part of the club. My best memory so far was putting in a try saving tackle against Kinross. My rugby hero is Tommy Seymour.

I have been playing for four years now, since I started in S1 at Bell Baxter, then a Howe coach asked me to try out training on a Wednesday night, I’ve not stopped since. I enjoy being with my friends, enjoy winning as part of team. The Howe as a club is l ike one big family. I was part of the Howe team which won the Madras 7s in 2017 and we reached the Caledonia Cup Final as well. My rugby hero is Dan Carter. He plays at a very high standard every game, creates chances out of nothing. And off the pitch he is involved with lot of community work.

My first knowledge of the Howe was at school, where I played football. In 1953-4 local farmer Will ie Bell wanted me to come in a watch a game he was playing in. I watched for 10-15 minutes, wasn’t too impressed and went home.

I did go back and to play for the 2nd XV against Perthshire, my first time ever in the front row. Not knowing the rules, our captain fi l led me in as the game went on! In 1954 I attended the AGM, and learnt coming back from some matches, you did not always get home the same day as the game!

Howe have always been great tourists. In 1959 I joined a group of 30, all clad in kilts and duffle coats. Travelling in a Dakota from Edinburgh we sat on our hand luggage on the floor. Someone decided to open a window. As it was pressure controlled we returned to the airport before continuing our flight.

At Duffus it is always rousing to hear the war cry ‘Howe, Howe, Howe’. In 1959 playing for Scotland in Ireland we won 6-5 and members of the Howe carried me off the pitch, shouting ‘Howe, Howe, Howe’.

I have been a member of the Howe for 64 years, it is a club steeped in tradition, rugby history, and progressive development. Like my own introduction to rugby, it offers opportunity to experience this great game to those who wish to play, coach, referee, administrate and support.
