1st Sunday of Lent

February 21 & 22, 22015

Genesis 9:8-15 God’s covenant with

Noah, when he was

delivered from the

flood.

Psalm 25 “Your ways, O

Lord, are love and

truth to those who

keep your covenant.”

1 Peter 3:18-22 The water of the

flood prefigured

Baptism, which saves

you now.

Mark 1:12-15 Jesus was tempted by

Satan, and the angels

ministered to Him.

Our first two readings today are about God’s covenant with Noah,

Mark’s Gospel recounts, in his typical brief fashion, Jesus’ sojourn in

the desert and his announcement of the Kingdom of God. All we have

to do is repent and believe in the gospel—the Good News. As we lis-

ten to these readings today, let us recall our own baptismal covenant

with God (or for the catechumens, the one that you are about to make

this Easter Vigil) and how we ourselves are repenting and believing in

the Good News of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Pro-Life Reflection

The defense and promotion 0f human life are not the

monopoly of anyone, but rather the

responsibility and task of all. ~The Gospel of Life, 91

Reflection. In the Gospel of Life, Pope John Paul states

that no person or group, including the Catholic Church,

has a monopoly on the defense of life. He called on all

Christians, and all people of goodwill, to cooperate with

each other in this effort.

Indeed, we all need one another to accomplish the

works of justice.

Prayer. Lord, enable those who work for the

defense of life to accept one another and to rejoice in

the fruits of their collaboration.

Remember Us in Your Will!!!

valuable contributions a parishioner can make, directly

benefitting the future mission and ministries of our parish

and school. If you are considering leaving your gift as a

will or bequest to the parish and would like additional

information, please contact our office at (808) 455-3012.

Page 3: 1st Sunday of Lent February 21 & 22, 2015 · 1st Sunday of Lent 2nd Sunday of Lent February 21 & 22, 22015 Genesis 9:8-15 God’s covenant with Noah, when he was delivered from the

Today’s Gospel is the classic Lenten story: 40 days; time in the dry

desert; temptations. What else could we possibly need to get our Lent

off to a good start?

Mark’s version of Jesus in the desert is very short, so much so that

important details can easily be overlooked. Take the first line, “The

Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert.” If you hope for a good Lent, this

is probably the most important sentence of the whole story. Really!

If the Spirit drove Jesus into the desert, this means that Jesus was

responding to God. Jesus was not seeking pain, temptation, extreme

asceticism. Having just been baptized and affirmed as beloved by God,

Jesus let Himself be led by the Spirit.

A good Lent is not about us initiating change. Yes, prayer, almsgiving

and fasting are typically involved as God deepens our relationship with

Him. However, the key is not what we do, but in opening ourselves to

God can lead us.

Lord, lead us into desert this Lent. Or not. As You will.
