I trust that you all had a nice celebration of Thanksgiving. I’d like to thank everyone who made Thanksgiving a little nicer for the less fortunate. I’m grateful to Jerry Provost, the director of our Food Pantry, and all the volunteers who worked so hard on making and distributing food baskets. Everyone who donated turkeys, volunteering at the Thanksgiving Dinner for the elderly, and on and on…thank you very much!Today we begin the great and glorious Season of Advent. This time of year holds many meanings for all of us. It is the start of the Christmas Season (although some department stores would have us believe the season started on Halloween!), it marks the dawn of winter and it is a season of reflection as another year comes to an end.

All of those meanings are true and for the Christian it is also the Season of Waiting. Advent is a time in the church year when we are reminded that we are waiting in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. We are not supposed to pretend that Jesus has not been born yet. Christmas is not the reenactment of the Birth of Christ, but rather a remembrance. Advent serves to heighten that remembrance and to heighten our awareness of the need to repent and make ourselves ready for the return of our Savior. It is the time to prepare for the fullness of time.

The fullness of time is the completion of God’s creation. We will hear in the lovely reading from the prophet Isaiah throughout Advent what the completion of creation will look like. The lowly will find joy in the Lord, we will keep the name of the Lord holy, gloom and darkness will be no more. The fullness of time has not yet happened, which means that creation is not yet complete. In this season of Advent we pray for its completion, we watch for its completion and we must participate in its completion.

We are partners with God in all of creation. We must always work with God to bring creation to its fullness. We do that by caring for the earth and preserving our natural resources. We do that by caring for all of the creatures of the earth—none of them are to be abused. We do that by caring for one another. Love and forgiveness and relationships of justice and peace will usher in the fullness of time. We have a role in the completion of creation. We must play our roles and do all we can to help usher in the fullness of time.

Enjoy this Advent Season. Even as you run around getting ready for Christmas, remember that you are doing your part to bring about the fullness of time. So smile, spread cheer and be peaceful. Those are sure signs of the coming of the fullness of time!

It was a great week at St. Mary’s and I’m looking forward to another one to come. Thanks for all you do for us and have a great week yourself!

Church Courtyard after Masses

November 26 - 27 & December 3 - 4[Saturday after 5 PM mass

Sunday after 9:00, 10:30 AM & 12 Noon masses)

The hour-long practice goes back to monastic times when the same scripture passage is read three times with a period of silence after each reading, followed by participants sharing their insight into God’s Word (if they choose).

This is based on two beliefs: 1) silent time gives time to listen to God and 2) each of us carries a piece of the Good News within our hearts.

Three Mondays during Advent [December 5, 12 and 19]

from 7:00 - 8:00 PM in the Prayer Room, we will use the Gospel for the following Sunday as our

point of reference.

Our school theme this year, Pray, Serve, Give-Do Good Works Each Day, has helped our students and staff understand the needs of others. Our Service Projects continue to help those around us. Recently, our students

participated in a project called “Movember,” sponsored by the Student Council. This project called to attention those patients suffering with prostate cancer. Students raised funds by purchasing mustaches which they were able to have with them during the school day.

The Community Service Club, an after-school Club, is currently collecting books for schools that we have partnered with in Paterson and Camden. So far, approximately 300 books have been collected.

“An Inconvenient Truth,” the multi-award winning film about former Vice President Al Gore’s campaign to educate people about climate change, including global warming, will be shown on Wednesday, November 30, at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall of St. Anne’s Parish, 15-05 St. Anne’s Street, Fair Lawn.

Sponsored by the Faith Center Board at St. Anne’s, the film premiered in 2006, the year it won Oscars for Best Documentary and Best Song. It subsequently won several dozen other awards, mostly in the Best Documentary or Best Non-Fiction Film category and is credited with raising international awareness to climate change. In May 2015, Pope Francis published an encyclical, Laudato Si, which focuses on climate change and the need for people throughout the world, regardless of religious affiliation, to care for planet Earth, “our common home,” as the pope describes it. Marianne Thorpe, a member of St. Anne’s Faith Center Board, said, “We decided to show “An Inconvenient Truth” to increase local awareness of issues related to climate change in light of the pope’s encyclical.”

Following the screening, a discussion will be held. Those helping to moderate the discussion will include several parishioners from St. Mary’s Parish, Pompton Lakes, including Jackie Schramm, director of the Social Justice Ministry at St. Mary’s. That group has shown several films focusing on the environment and climate change, including ‘An Inconvenient Truth.’ Raising awareness to climate change is one of the primary goals of the ministry.

Light refreshments will be served during the discussion.

The public is invited to attend and admission is free. For further information regarding the event, please call St. Anne’s Rectory at 201.791.1616.
