To differentiate the three structure of sentences:

Simple sentences are group of words with only one complete thought. They can stand alone. They are also called independent clauses.

Remember

Compound sentences are group of words with two complete thought or two independent clauses. These clauses are joined by connectors for, and, nor, but, or yet, and so. (FANBOYS)

Remember

Complex sentences are made up of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. A dependent clause has a subject-verb combination but it does not have a complete thought. A dependent clause cannot stand alone. Connectors or conjunctions as because, so that, if, unless, where and when are used to join two sentences in such a way that one sentence depends on the other sentence.
