L Elements of Able Company performed a. raid the morning of 15 December, 1951, The mission of this equad was to raid enemy positions with the explicit purpose of capturing prisoners in the vicinity of DT 278457,

2, For route of advance &.nd withdrawal of patrol see overlay.

3. At 0545 the squad size rs.iding force de:_oc.rted friendly llnee at DT 281454. They moved along the north east slope of "Able" ridge, runcing into the area where the enemy positions are locat-ed, locally known as "Lukes' Castle", DT 27?457. The point of the raider~ gained the creEt of the ridge and began maneuvering toward the "Caetle" wroper. At thie point the enemy o:)ened fire u-oon the ra,_ders with burp gunl!l" and began throwing concussion and 1 potato ma.sher" grenac_es. The raiders imnediately deployed and returned fire. Serger.nt Le.shley began manuevering the ra.iG.ers into posit ion to ena-ole him to accomnlish the mission. It soon became evident that the enemy strength was of such numbers that a withdrawal was tactically sound, This inf0rmation was radioed to the Company Com:_,ander and the order to withdraw wal!l given. The wi thdr<n!al was accomplished using the same route as the advawce. This route has not been known to have been subjected to enemy mort"-r or artillery fire and no known enemy mine fields have been plotted in this area. The ps.trol returned to friendly lines at 0655.

4. Preparatory fires were not used in order to maintain the element of surprise. Supporting fire! used for the raid ~ere the Battalion Slmm and orgc-.nic 60rnm mortors. Suu.;ort'ng fires were also .<seco_ to cover the wi thdraNal of the raidere,

5. Results of the raid: (a) Enemy: Three (3) counted KIA (b) Friendly: Four (4) \itA with no evacuation required

6. It is estimated that the enemy strength encoantered numbered sixty (60) ene~y troops. The enemy's positions noted consisted of buniers apparently well constructed with a system of connecting trenches, It was also noted thet an enemy automatic weayon position was in the process of construction in the vicinity of DT 2?6457.

Modification, Adaption, and Employment of the

Light l.f.achine Gun, Cal. 50 112 for

Sniping Operations.

A need has long been recognized for a we<·.pon with the following characteristics:

1. Direct Fire 2. Accuracy 3. Heavy Impact 4. Long Range 5. Mobility 6. Adaptability to Cover and Concealment 7. Low Cost

With two modificatlons, the Light Machine Gun, Cal. 50

M2, is capable of the above points in the defense.

The modifications, capabilities, limitations and suggestions for em:9loyment of this weapon will be discussed in the text of this report.

1. Modifications:

(a) Adoption of a telescopic sight.

The Telescopic Sight, M82, when fitted with an appro

priate adapter, can be installed on the weapon in the Anti-Air

craft Ring Sight Bracket. An adapter, a simply me.chined, single

piece of to~l steel, and fitted with three adjusting screws,

has been develo:;:>ed by the First Ordnance Be.ttalion, First Marine

Division. The pilot model of this adapter has been tested and

found satisfactory by this battalion.

(b) Modification of Elevating Mechanism,

To reduce side play that is evident in the present

elevating mechanism, two supporting cl&.mps are brazed to the

elevating mechanism baee, one on each side, A clamping bolt

is installed on each clamp, The clamping bolt on the mechc.>1ism

is re~oved, A pilot model of a modified elevating mechanism

was .effected by First Ordnance Battalion, First Marine Division

a.nd .was tested and found satisfactory by this battalion.

The cost of modification has not been accurately established

It is believed however, that these modifications, including the

price of the telescopic sight, can be effected for less than

slxty-fi ve dollars per wea.pon.

2. Capabilities:

(a) Accuracy.

The accuracy of the weapon is imroroved by the modifi

cation to the elevating mechanism. Virtually all mechanica.l

play is eliminated, enabling the gunner to return to the cor

rect sight picture after firing each round, A gun>ier with

previous 50 caliber experience can be instructed on proper

sight picture and proper trigger squeeze, and be firing accurately

wit~in one hour.

(b) Range,

Direct hits on human-sized targets can be expected

ninety percent at ranges up to 1300 yards. At 2400 yards a

dispersion pattern four yards in dia.meter is noted.

(c) Destructive effect,

The characteristics of cal, 50 armor piercing incendiary

ammunition aF:)ly, Combined with this weapon 1 s accuracy, the

destruct! ve effect of th~.s ammunl.tlon will make any position,

except the most heavily fortified, untenable for enemy troops.

(d) Indirect fire.

It has been determined, that an observer, removed from

the gun ts.rget line, can effeoti vely deliver accurate fire.

In the case of targets of opportunity that are not visible to

the gun pos:c tion, an observer, by observing the im)act of the

round, Jllay direct fire by using ap:9rortmate changes in rels.tion

to the known gun-target line. The gunner, after firing to a

uoint close to the desired target brings hie telescopic sight

to bear on a prominent target in the vicinity for his correct

sight picture. Successive changes are made by traversing and

elevating the weapon and keeping the same sight-picture.

(e) Initial round accuracy.

Upon instal.ation of the weapon in de:fensi ve position,

a range c2rd is constructed. Targets of possible interest

and o:;:>portun:'. ty and prominent land.-:1arks are noted. Changes

in eleve.tion e.nd windage are noted on each target in sight

click increments from a zero target. As a target presents it

self, the appropriate che.nge is made and the ;.reapon is brought

to bear. On ts.rgets up to 1300 yards, direct hits may be expected.

(f) Single round feature.

The single shot feature of this weapon lends itself

admirably to sniping operations by enabling the gun position

to remain anonymous to the enemy thru the lack of automatic

fire.

(g) Ammunition supply.

The single round feature of the weapon calls for a

minimum amount of ammunition. The only type of acmun~tion

feasible for this type of o~eratlon is armor piercing incendiary.

3. Limitations:

(a) Automatic fire.

The weapon cannot be fired for mere than one·round

at a til2le, _without incurring possible discovery by enemy

observetion, and thereby becoming a priority target for him.

The accuracy of the r1eapon ;.'ill b,·ing a hit on the first round

but tbe recoil vibra.tion will cause dis:.oersion among successive

rounds. ExP.mple: Of a five-round burst at 700 yards, one hit

(firs"t round), four rounds out. Last round apnroximately four

yards off target. Natural dispersion is up and right at a

forty-five degree angle.

{b) Weight of weapon.

The ,;eight of the weapon, increased though slightly

by modification, prohibits transports.t.ton, except by vehicle

for long distances.

{c) Size of position.

The positions needed for this weaDon are of necessity

large, and they require e;ctensi ve camouflage.

4.Suggestions for employment

(a) Positions.

It is suggeeted that the weapon be installed in per

rr.anent or semi-permanent positions. The perms.nent types of

concrete and steel for permanent defenses. The semi-permanent

sandbag or log bunkers, for static defense situations during

a campaign. It is suggested that a "T8 frame constructed of

heavy lo~s or finished lumber be used as a gun site, This

would insure constant accuracy and reduce settling. Such a

:frame may be hastily constructed from logs or lumber available

locally, The ·frame -.;ould be recessed in the ground and

suitable pockets for the tripod spades out into the logs, This

battalion has had measurable success with a frame of this type.

(b) Organization.

It is suggested that six suCh weapons be authorized

the infantry battalion. il'here a defensive si tu2 tJ_on 11ermi ts

good observation a.long the batts_lion :frontage, such weapons

OB.n be employed to their full eff'.ciency, The Anti-Tank

and Assault Platoon of the \veapons Company, Infantry Batte.lion

can easily reorganize to hs.ndle the proposed authorized wec>.pons.

By asEign1ng one wea.l)On per squad of the above organization,

the weapons could be effectively employed in the defense with

no ch.e.nge in tables of Organization. The crew per weapon would

consist of one gunner, one assistant gunner, one observer, and

one ammunition carrier.

C OH C LTJSI ONS:

1. That the capabilities of this weapon outweigh it 1 s limita

tions, 2. That this weapon provides the defense with sniping capabi

lities to ranges in excess of 2000 yards, 3. That more enemy positions are subJected to accurate, heavy

impact, flat trajectory fire. 4. That the ammunition used renders positions untenable, that

would effectively resist smaller caliber fire. 5, That the cost of modific~tion and ammunition are negligible,

as compared to any ls.rger bore weapon of the same capabilities.

6. That it would be in the best interests ot the Corns, that

this weapon be adopted for use as suggested. -

(1) Gun Diary for MG Caliber 50, M-2, Flexible, w/M-82 Telescopic sight and modified elevating clamp mechanism, for period 16-24 December 1951.

1. The capabilities and limitations of the MG Caliber 50 M-2, Flexible w/modification submitted herewi t.h covers the employment of this we~C.pon in a defensive posl tion from 16 D&cember to 24 December 1951.

2.· This wea,pon has proven to be very ilffective for sniping at &nemy personnel and bunkers from ranges up to 2,000 yards and has made many of the bunkers and trenches untenable during the hours or daylight. By employing the weapons as a team, con~ected by sound power coiDnunications, plac~d approximately fifty (50) yards apart, a target sight~ by one gunner or observer can be brought under fire by both weapons; this has resulted in greater harassment and confcision to the enemy.

3. Snipers employing MG C2liber 50, 1•1-2, Flexible, w/modification inflicted nine ( 9) enemy KIA. For ammunition exlcended, see enclosure (1). These guns are most effective when used as a single shot sniping •·ree.pon; maximum accuracy is lost .,-hin fired in bursts Clue to greater dispersion. For use as a sniping weapon it has been found far superior to the scope mounted M-1 rifle because of its longo;~r range, greater s:hocking power and stable mo'lnt. Ho~rev11r, due to its limited traverse, weight and position required for its employment, the weapon is not as quickly employed as the scope mounted H-1 rifle nor is it intended tha.t thil MG Caliber 50, M-2, Flexible w/modifics.tion supersede the scope mounted M-1 rifle.

4. Tha following findings e.re based upon ex_perience in the employment of the MG Caliber 60, M-2, Flexible, wfmodlfica.tion:

a. Gun positions should be carefully selected, offering if possible, long r2nge and enfilade fire of enemy trenches and bunkers.
