Dear Parents

Occasionally central government or Central Bedfordshire ask our children to complete a

survey. These can be on a range of topics including PE, Mental Health, curriculum coverage.

We have recently got the results from one of these surveys that showed us that we are ‘best

value’ in Central Bedfordshire for children feeling safe at school (focusing on bullying) and for

children having high self-esteem.

I know that children’s happiness and mental health is incredibly important and as a teaching

staff we have been looking closely at this area. We are really pleased to be helping the

Department of Education research strategies for improving children’s self-esteem and mental

health. We are also helping JIGSAW (Central Beds) run a research project to increase

children’s feeling of self-worth in the Early Years. Possibly the most exciting is news that the

University of Bedfordshire have asked to study how we promote children’s voice at Hadrian.

This made me reflect, one of the real strengths at Hadrian is our children’s attitude. They are

reflective, kind and motivated to make changes in the school. Our older children work hard to

make sure that younger children feel like they belong. I think that this culture of support and

empowerment has more of an impact than anything that we can do as adults. With this in

mind, I have handed my computer over to our student leadership group and they are

responsible for writing the rest of this article (different sections were written and added to by

different children and so the style might vary):

‘We are very proud to be students of this amazing school and enjoy our learning. One of the

things that we like about Hadrian is that we get to make suggestions on how to make the

school better. These are some of the things that we have started at the school:

such as: arts and crafts, sports and dance. You can run a club when you are in year five and

six and it means that you get to know the younger children and be a role model to them.

Every Friday morning, we run the whole school assembly. We have to be organised as we give

out certificates, share the scores of the house points and announce the attendance of

different classes. We even award the school bear, Bubbles.

Our councils do lots of different things (Maths, Library, Technical Wizards, Arts, Sports Leaders,

House Captains, Prefects). You can be in a council from Year 3 but you have to apply. I

[Clara] am a technical wizard. We entered a competition (by making a video) and won

money. This meant we got to choose computers for the school. Then we wrote to Amazon and

kindly persuaded them that they should give us some electronics for our school. They invited us

on a tour and after the tour we got a robot and a kindle! The latest thing we have done is

started coding during council meetings, sometimes it can a bit hard but it’s always fun.

If you are a prefect you can get involved in many jobs, such as litter picking and the friendship

shed. Not only does litter picking help our school, it helps the environment too. Our friendship

shed ensures that no one is bored at playtime and lunchtime because it is full of exciting toys.

We helped decide the values that were most important at the school. I am the first values

ambassador for creativity. I [Jessica] was nominated by other children and now I look out for

children being creative. When I have chosen 6 children, I have a meeting with Miss Bennett

and then give out their prizes in assembly. This helps younger children because they will be

happy to get a prize and then they will remember that prize and be good and more creative.

In conclusion, we are very thankful for all the children. Thank you, Hadrian Academy student

leadership panel.

The Friday morning mile proved a great success and is to

continue again this school year. Can we ask all parents that

they be respectful to the privacy of our neighbours when

using the pathway during the Friday Morning Mile.

Parking at Hadrian Avenue and surrounding streets/entrances –

Please always park considerately even if running late and do not park over

our neighbour’s driveways or the grass verges. We do not wish to upset or

inconvenience our neighbours who have on occasion been unable to

access their own driveways. This affects both the wellbeing of our local

residents and the safety of our children, walking to and from school. Also

please watch your speed in the vicinity of the school and to always be

cautious of children.

Thank you.

Friday 8th March. Children can come to

school dressed as their favourite book

character, bringing books to life in our

corridors. There will be prizes for the best

costumes across the key stages.

We are holding an information session on Tuesday

12th March at 3.15pm for children and parents who

Talented Technicians Visit

On Thursday 24th January our student voice group- the Talented Technicians were able to go

and explore the technology behind your everyday Amazon delivery. They were welcomed into

the packaging factory and instantly they were met with the sounds of conveyor belts and robots

doing their jobs. The whole system relies on robotics that have been programmed to move and

scan independently. It was a very clever sight to see! The children were able to package up their

own box and had great fun directing the machines to produce wet tape to the exact length they

needed. Once the children had finished their journey around the factory, they were given a huge

surprise – a kindle fire and a dash-dot robot. These gifts mean the children can begin to program

their own robotics back at school!

Hadrian Choir

Twenty six members of Hadrian’s choir used two days of their half term to go to Paris and share

their love of singing.

They had an amazing time performing on the stage at Disneyland Paris, and made a superb

sound. They also sang at a famous children’s hospital, where the patients and nurses happily

mouthed along the French version of popular songs and applauded energetically at the end.

Needless to state the children also managed to go on many rides and visit some famous

places in Paris. Many thanks to all helpers who helped to keep the children safe and give them

a fun time.

In Year 2 the children thoroughly enjoyed learning all about how to stay safe and be kind when

using the internet. The children all wrote kind comments about each other on their t-shirts and

then wore them with pride for the rest of the day. The children said it made them feel happy and

good about themselves.

Children in year 1 also designed their own t-shirts using nice and

positive words and images.

Year 3 created different 3D shapes using modelling materials in Maths.

In English year 3 investigated a crime scene involving missing dogs and jewels. We looked

around the classroom for clues and tried to predict what might have happened. In the

afternoon we found out that Mrs Foster’s dog had stolen the jewels! He bought them back for

us and we had a fun time playing with him for the afternoon.

Year 4 experience the

In Year 4 we have had an exciting few weeks exploring what life might have been like for people

living in the Early Bronze Age. We took some inspiration from the ‘Beaker People’ and tried to

make clay beakers just like they would have. These pots can be found in Bronze Age burial sites

and they give archaeologists clues as to what life may have been like. It was quite a challenge

to mould the clay into the correct shape but we managed it. Decorating the pots was a delicate

job and it really made us appreciate how skilled the ‘Beaker People’ must have been.

Puppet making in year 5

We ended our topic , ‘All the Fun of the Fair’, by making puppets. Year 5 enjoyed choosing

their materials and the challenge of using effective techniques to fasten the parts together to

make it strong.

Rakshabanda!

As part of year 5 religious education work, we made ‘rakhis’ which are like friendship bracelets

that Hindu sisters give to their brothers. Some children wanted to keep theirs but the message is

to be generous and caring to each other. It was lovely to see the concentration they put in

and the help they gave each other.
