THE SPOOK SCHOOLWHO: Nye Todd (guitar/vocals), Adam Todd (guitar/vocals), Anna Cory (bass/vocals), Niall McCamley(drums)WHERE: EdinburghFOR FANS OF: The Smiths,The Primitives, The WeddingPresentJIM SAYS: Bands like TheSpook School are exactlywhy I do what I do, and why Ifell in love with new musicfrom Scotland. As a teenager I loved Peter

Easton’s legendary Rock OnScotland (later Beat Patrol)on BBC Radio Scotland. Sattaking notes, working out mynext vinyl purchase, I lovedthat the acts were accessibleand I could see them live.I remember hearing The

Proclaimers for the first timeand heading straight to Gold-rush Records in Perth.“They’ve no released any-thing yet” I was told. Theshow also introduced me toThe Shop Assistants, The Pas-tels, BMX Bandits, The Sha-men, Primal Scream and TheJesus And Mary Chain. It was the mid-80s, era of

the seminal NME cassettetape C86. To this day, C86remains a shorthand for indieguitar pop — and The SpookSchool, formed in 2011, fit inthere nicely.Niall told me: “When we

formed Adam was really intoC86-ish stuff but the rest of usdidn’t really know much aboutindie pop. Nye hadn’t heard

The Pastels until we were com-pared to them in reviews! We’ve embraced it now. Noneof us are classically trained sowe were always going to befairly intuitive.”Wonderfully infectious pop

songs with a raw edge hookyou in. Fun pop stylings carryobservations on growing up,particularly gender (Nye iden-tifies as trans). Songs likeCan You Ever Trust A ManWho Thinks Matt Damon’sReally Cool? sound likethey’d have gone straight onJohn Peel’s playlist. No sur-prise then that the bandhooked up with legendaryindie label Fortuna POP!,founded by Sean Price, fortheir recently released albumDress Up.Niall said: “It’s our dream

label. We played IndietracksFestival and Sean invited usto play for him in London.Just before we arrived heemailed to ask if we wereinteresting in signing. We justscreamed and did sillydances — and then tried tosound really calm and coolsaying ‘yes please’.”Dress Up is out now, along

with the single I’ll Be Honest.MORE: facebook.com/thespookschoolQ Jim will be playing The SpookSchool on In:Demand Uncut this Sun-day from 7pm on Clyde 1, ForthOne, Northsound 1, Radio Borders,Tay FM, West FM & West Sound FM.

A ZOMBIE-SLAYINGadventure was never meantto be pretty. And that’s agood thing, as DR3 doesn’trely on good looks. The game isn’t quite up

to speed with the newconsole, but it’s saved byits gameplay. The bestXbox One launch title.

SCALED to fit the newhorizons of next-gengaming, Ghosts looksfantastic on the Xbox One.But, and whisper it

around Microsoft, it looksslightly better on the PS4.But Call Of Duty truly

delivers a top-end gamingspectacle on both.

SAME game, newplatform? Not quite. The next-gen FIFA has

an entirely new engine —delivering a polishedversion of the currentgame.Every player action looks

and feels that little bit moreauthentic.

LET’S start with themillion-dollar question— how much better isthis than the Xbox360?In terms of raw power, the next generation of con-soles is considerably bet-ter. But that’s to beexpected from a costlynew piece of kit.Fancy graphics andfaster processing arealmost a given. This machine is built forgamers who want torecord themselves inaction, then share it withtheir friends and otherusers through Game DVR.Or it is for the gamerswho want to multi-taskor pause their gameand switch seamlesslyto a movie. And it is for thosewho don’t want to berestricted by a controllerand wish to search andcommand through their

voice. The Xbox is aimedto be connected to a house-hold’s main television, whereas the PS4 feelsmore geared to a bedroom.Microsoft may have lostthe PR war with Sony pre-launch but, now the talk-ing is done, it comes downto the product — and thisis a serious bit of kit.The Kinect, unlike Play-Station’s camera, isn’t anafter-thought, it is an

essential part of the XboxOne experience. Crucially, unlike on the 360, here ithelps rather than hinders.Yes, the Xbox One ismore expensive than thePS4, but the £80 disparityis mostly covered by theKinect being bundled. There’s no getting awayfrom the fact that £429 isa lot of money — especiallyas 360s are retailing from£129.99.

CasualBut what is also unavoid-able, is that gaming on theXbox One — and the PS4— will improve.Sooner or later, allgamers will own one.For the more casualuser, the Xbox Oneoffers much morebeyond mere gaming —but it desperatelyneeds a genuinelyAAA title to justify the

expenditure.
