Len replaces Alfredo Saab, who re- turned to an engineering position in PCD Sicilian by birth, Len moved to the United States when he was 15 years old. He received his Bache- lor's degree at City College of New York and a Master's degree in Elec- trical Engineering from the Univer- sity of Santa Clara. Len first worked for SLAC in the Electronics Department, and later became a group leader when the Power Conversion Department was created in 1988. One of his early contributions was to design power supplies for quadrupole and corrector magnets in the linac. He also designed pulsed magnet power supplies for the A line and PEP, blowtorch-quad power sup- plies for SLC, and silicon-controlled rectifier power supplies for various facilities. Len has been praised by col- leagues for keeping a tight rein on costs. He is noted for being able to get the most from the least amount of expenditure. In these times of tight budgets this is indeed an ad- mirable trait. A world traveler, he has visited Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, New Zealand, Morocco, and China. He loves baroque and renaissance music, and reading. In fact, Len's book collection is so extensive that it took several weeks to restore it to order after the Loma Prieta earthquake. Len's son, Michael, practices medicine in the Los Angeles area. WIS contributes much to SLAC communityIN JANUARY 1991 the co-founders of the Women's Inter-change at SLAC (WIS) did notknow how far-reaching theirefforts to involve the SLAC com-munity would be. At that timeJanet Dixon, a manager in theTelecommunications department,and Valerie Phillips, Travel man-ager, simply planned to gather agroup of people for the purpose ofdiscussing issues of importance towomen.

From that initial meeting WIShas evolved into an unofficial buteffective voice for SLAC women inparticular and SLAC employees ingeneral. WIS is unofficial in that ithas no elected officers, no dues,and no by-laws. It receives nofunding from its members or fromSLAC management. Yet in its shortexistence it has consistently orga-nized a monthly public seminarand a monthly planning meeting.Both meetings are open to anyonein the SLAC community and areheld during the lunch hour. Any-one who wishes to may attend theWIS planning meetings, held thesecond Wednesday of each month.The time and location of the meet-ings is announced in the news-group WIS-L.

Society. She recently spent sixmonths at Argonne National Labhelping to design shielding for theAdvanced Photon Source Syn-chrotron Radiation beam lines.

She formed and chaired a com-mittee of DOE contractors toaddress concerns related to theimplementation of the DOEAccelerator Safety Order. She was

(held in 1993 before the Webbecame a household word), con-ducted by Louise Addis, SLAC'sformer librarian, drew a largecrowd of over 70 participants. Aneven greater number of peopleattended a lecture by Susan Faludi,well-known feminist and a KnightFellow at Stanford at the time.

Seminars on child care spon-sored by WIS have had far-reach-ing effects: a parents' group and atask force were formed to studythe issue of on-site child care. Sur-vey results showed that on-sitechild care was needed, however,SLAC is not financially able to pro-vide such a facility at present.

A major contribution to theSLAC community is the annualTake Our Daughters To WorkDay. This event was initiatedthrough the determination ofEvelyn Eldridge-Diaz who wanted

also the founder and first editor ofthe International Accelerator Radio-logical Protection Electronic Newslet-ter, and has a number ofpublications in scientific journals.She is currently participating in aresearch project to develop a lowenergy x-ray dosimeter.

WIS seminars are sometimestechnical in nature; for example,Professor Pat Burchat spoke aboutthe Standard Model of ParticlePhysics. On another occasion thetopic was the impact of domesticviolence on the workplace. MyraStrober, a Stanford faculty mem-ber, spoke on feminist economics.

WIS founder Dixon put it thisway, "I think WIS has introducednot only a wide variety of topics ofcurrent interest, but also broughtup topics that are cutting edge. Wethink that it is important to noticethese emergent issues and givethem a larger forum in which to beaired." When asked about thefuture of WIS, co-founder Phillipssaid, "Regardless of gender, thereare issues which we need to talkabout as concerned and literate cit-izens. I hope that WIS continues toprovide that opportunity."

Humdinger construction on targetAT A RECENT SCIENCE edu-cation conference in Monterey,SLAC physicist Helen Quinnhelped construct a humdinger: agizmo that "hummed" when astring was pulled and "dinged"when the string was released.Developing gizmos is somewhatoutside Quinn's normal role as atheoretical physicist, but it is verymuch a part of her role as Assis-tant to the Director for Educationand Public Outreach.

This demonstration for teachersand administrators from the Oak-land Unified School District wasan example of the type of hands-on activity that students can do inthe classroom. The activity teachesstudents a number of importantconcepts that are practiced by sci-entists: how to take risks, how to

work together in small groups,and how to share ideas. They alsolearn the scientific process ofbuilding a model, testing it, andthen refining it.

Steve Luntz, an elementaryteacher from Thornhill School, said"I really got into building thathumdinger. I would like to do itagain and really get it right. I'veworked out an amazing alternatedesign."

Training in hands-on scienceactivities gives teachers andadministrators a better under-standing of the issues and obstaclesin implementing such programs inthe classroom. Some of the issuesinclude purchase and maintenanceof science kits, training for teach-ers, and family involvement in achild's science education. Ideas for

PEP-Il's summer 1995 rally rewardingTHE PEP-II ENDEAVOR is a col-laboration of the three large SanFrancisco Bay-Area DOE laborato-ries-SLAC, LBL, and LLNL. Allphases of the work are shared, beit design, procurement, fabrica-tion, or installation. Coordinationof this work represents a ratherformidable organizational chal-lenge. One way to maximize thesuccess of this work and to pro-mote a team spirit is to hold a bi-annual, one-day PEP-II Rally. Thethird such rally was held July 14.

The idea of the rally is to bringtogether, in a casual setting, asmany of the three-lab PEP-II per-sonnel as possible. Typically theevent starts mid-morning with aseries of progress reports, fol-lowed by a hosted lunch and atour of interesting PEP-II worksites. Unscheduled time during theday allows relaxed mixingbetween co-workers. Specialemphasis is placed on enticing thefabrication staff to the Rally. OnJuly 14, by special agreement withSLAC management, all members ofthe SLAC shops were given timeoff to join the lunch and subse-quent tour of PEP-II work sites.

system. Checkout for electronextraction and transport will beginthis fall.

Almost all the PEP magnets inthe High-Energy Ring have beenrefurbished and re-measured. Mag-net supports are arriving and arebeing installed along with thedipole magnets, and electricalinstallation is moving ahead onschedule. Vacuum extrusions havebeen received from the vendor andare in fabrication. Uli Wienandswas pleased to announce that theHigh-Energy Ring remains onschedule for checkout in spring1997.

Bob Rimmer summarizedprogress for the rf system, sayingthat most first articles are in high-power testing. As of this writing,the 1.2 MW klystron, the cavity,and the cavity window have allmet or exceeded their operatingspecifications. The cavity is a par-ticularly good example of themelding of the technical strengthsof the three collaborating labs;each lab contributed to the successof this challenging venture in acrucial way. process for the rf system is wellalong; the klystrons, circulators,and cavities are all ordered and infabrication.

After the reports, 350 cowork-ers enjoyed lunch and informalsocializing under the trees at theSector 6 picnic area. The weather-man chimed in with a picture-per-fect day.

Following lunch, four bus-loads of PEP-IIers, spaced about 10minutes apart, enjoyed a guidedtour of some of the major PEP-IIwork sites. The tour providedmany of the PEP-II personnel anopportunity to see the fruits oftheir labor in the installation andtest phase. For some it was theirfirst visit to the PEP tunnel.

Based on the enthusiastic com-ments received from many of theparticipants, the July 14 Rally waslikely our most successful to date.Future Rallies are planned for bothLBL and LLNL, where much of thefabrication will start soon. ThePEP-II administrative staff are to becongratulated on their exceptionalorganization, which allowed acrowded day to proceed verysmoothly.

WHEN SPRING IS IN BLOOM,young men's thoughts turnto...sports. Baseball, volleyball,biking, surfing, swimming, hiking,you name it. Once in a while thislove affair can become a gruelingadventure, a true challenge. Andwhen is a challenge more than justa challenge? The answer: when itinvolves facial hair, or the lackthereof. The game-volleyball.The challenge-the two captainswould field a team of volleyballfanatics (fans) from the ES&Hdivision. The "prize"-the losingside must buy pizza for all-andthe captain of the losing teammust shave his beard.

The two contenders were fromthe ES&H division. They were: JackHahn, Safety, Health, and Assur-ance (SHA), and Keith Reynolds,Planners, Editors and Trainers(PET).

The date (May 11), place (A&Elawn), and time (12:06 PM) for thecontest were agreed on. Both cap-tains frantically put together ateam, with each side taunting theother about the possibility oflosing; side bets between the twoteams became common.

The morning of the contestarrived in glorious shades of pinkand rose. It was a fine day toshave. Opening ceremonies beganat precisely 12:06 before the crowdof spectators. The Master of Cere-monies, Judy Nowag, introducedthe two team captains. The next tobe introduced were The Impecca-bly Impartial Game Officials fromOHP: Eddie McGee, referee; RogerSit, score keeper; and Michelle Sil-vestre, time keeper.

And last, but not least, the ES&HTonsorial Team was introduced.They were charged with ensuringthat the shaving ceremony was in

And then the moment was athand. It was time to see-whowould shave. After two 15-minutehalves in the grueling sun, thefinal score was 42-13. One captainlost more than the game...for theend results, see the photo, right.

Pests... Pests... Pests...THE GOOD NEWS IS that SLACoccupies one of the most beautifullocations in the Bay Area. From ourhillside we have an excellent viewof Palo Alto, the Hoover Tower atStanford University, and a breath-taking panorama of the south bay.The bad news is that SLAC sharesthe site with many of MotherNature's other living creatures.

Ants...Ants...Ants...Are ants invading the empty bev-erage recycling container in yourarea? Is the beverage recyclingcontainer still inside? Are you stor-ing your own empty beverage con-tainers under your desk? Is yourcandy, coffee creamer, sugar andfood in a closeable container, or isit open to tiny invaders?

Many of the ant problems canbe alleviated by keeping the areafree of alluring elements. Twoyears ago, the A&E building hadants downstairs in the vendingarea. Ants were all over the emptybeverage recycling container. Therecycling container was moved toa location just outside the exitdoor; no other prevention was tak-en. The very next day the ants hadfollowed the container outside.This simple remedy worked. How-ever, if our pest control companyhad been called to spray for ants,the ants would have come back.

the product. Other products thatwork on contact but do not have aresidual effect are: SimpleGreenTM, WindexTM, or any otherammonia-based product.

If you are continually overrunby ants and have tried all theabove, ask your building managerto call Lana Smith in Facilities,ext. 2207. A pest control contractorwill be sent to spray the exteriorand/or interior of your building.NOTE: After the building has beensprayed it must be evacuated foreight hours.

Mice...Mice...Mice...SLAC is also overrun by thesepesky little critters, who are becom-ing bolder and bolder. They'veactually been seen eating rightunder a desk where someone wassitting. Again, a simple remedy isto keep food containers covered.

Mouse traps and peanut butterare available in the Facilities office(A&E building, room 232). Thesevarmints love to eat peanut butter,and traps can be set where appro-priate. When a mouse is caught,call Lana Smith, ext. 2207 to have itremoved.

Other Animals...Rats require a bigger trap. If youhave a problem with rats, call LanaSmith, ext. 2207 to arrange for apest control contractor to set traps.

Many other wild or feral ani-mals share our site; it is notuncommon to see deer, possums,raccoons, foxes, wild cats, andskunks at all times of the day andnight. Do not approach any wildanimals, as they may be danger-ous. Instead, call Lana to arrangeto have the Humane Society pickup injured or annoying animals.
