    Synoptic summary

NSW during February was dominated by thepresence of semi-stationary low pressure troughs, with above average cloudiness and humidity duringthe month.

February began with a high pressure system to thesouth of the state and a low pressure trough over

central NSW, driving moist easterly winds into thestate. This triggered moderate rainfall and cooltemperatures in the northeast, expanding to covermost of eastern NSW by the 3rd.

Conditions eased by the 4th, with a cold front thatcrossed the state on the 5th having little rainfallimpact in NSW. By the 7th, a second low pressuretrough extended into the northeast of the state, drawing moist tropical air into the east, in addition torenewed easterly winds driven by a high pressuresystem to the south of the state. This triggeredseveral days of rain and thunderstorms along the

NSW coast, persisting to the 14th.

A brief period of northerly winds and clearerconditions followed, before a third low pressuretrough pushed into the southeast from the 16th,triggering thunderstorm activity and rain in southernand western NSW. By the 20th, an additional lowpressure trough had developed in the east, with anembedded low off the central coast, with storms andrain extending to eastern and northern NSW on the20th and 21st.

Clearer conditions returned from the 22nd, as a high

pressure system lingered over the state, with anorthern trough on the 24th and 25th bringing littlerain beyond the Tweed region. From the 26th, thehigh pressure system began to move offshore, directing warm, moist northerly air into the state andtriggering thunderstorm activity in the west. As a lowpressure trough moved into the south of the state onthe 27th, this drew additional moisture from thenorthwest of the country, triggering widespreadheavy rain and cool conditions in southern NSW overthe last two days of the month

New South Wales recorded a statewide averagerainfall of 104.23 mm during February, double thehistorical average of 50.7 mm. This was the 11thwettest February on record, although not as wet asFebruary 2010 (118.75 mm). NSW has notexperienced below average rainfall during February

since 2006. The Murray Darling Basin also recorded82.61 mm of rain during February (average40.38 mm), the 12th wettest on record, althoughdrier than both 2010 and 2011.

Most of NSW experienced well above averagerainfall during February, with below average fallsonly experienced in isolated regions near theborders. At least 46 stations across the staterecorded their wettest February on record, with anadditional 69 wetter than any February in the pasttwenty years. Rainfall was particularly high in partsof the northwest, including the wettest February

since at least the 1970s at centres includingGunnedah, Tamworth, Narrabari and Moree. Largeareas of southern NSW also recorded more thanthree times their February average rainfall, includingthe wettest on record at Cooma Visitors Centre.

The month began with heavy rain in the northeast ofthe state, as an inland low pressure trough and moisteasterly windflow triggered a band of heavy rain thatextended from the Queensland border to the MidNorth Coast on the 1st and 2nd. Daily falls reached182.8 mm at Narrabri on the 1st, while seventeenstations experienced their wettest February day on

record on the 2nd. In particular, Tamworth Airportrecorded 121 mm, breaking the previous record of111.5 mm set at the old Airport site on 20 February1928. By February 3rd, the trough triggeredwidespread rain across eastern NSW, with fallseasing on the 4th.

The next rain event developed on the 8th, as moisteasterly flow triggered thunderstorms and heavyrainfall along the north coast, reaching 102.4 mm atTaree. These conditions persisted until the 14th, withthunderstorms and rainfall along the coast, locallyheavy at times, reaching 115.4 mm at Penrith on the10th and 86.6 mm at Careys Peak on the 15th.During this period, little to no rain fell in westernNSW.

Further rain and thunderstorms developed from the17th, with falls extending into central NSW. Rain wasparticularly heavy in the Metropolitan region on the20th, reaching 82 mm at Oatley, while moderate fallswere experienced across eastern and northern NSWon the 21st, including the wettest day in 85 years ofrecord at Cooma (Kiaora). This was followed byscattered light falls in coastal NSW on the 22nd and

23rd.By the 24th, conditions were generally dry acrossmost of NSW, with the exception of the Tweed area, which experienced falls of up to 85 mm at

Chillingham on the 25th associated with a lowpressure trough in Queensland.

The final significant rain event of the monthdeveloped from the 27th, as a semi-stationarytrough in southwestern NSW drew moist air from theIndian Ocean into the state, while northeasterly

winds drew further moisture from the Pacific. Thesecombined to bring widespread heavy rainfall tosouthern NSW, while thunderstorms triggeredfurther rain in the northwest. Three stationsexperienced their wettest February day on record onthe 28th, with records broken at an additional 17stations including Broken Hill Airport on the 29th,with falls reaching 141.2 mm at Gurrundurah andwidespread areas recording more than 50 mm,exceeding their monthly average in a single day.

The wettest overall was Yarras (Mount Seaview) with629.6 mm, followed by 425.0 mm at Bowra Sugarloafand 419.8 mm at Careys Peak (Barrington Tops).
