“Malaysian art is the canvas upon which our culture, our lifestyle, our landscapes and people are featured. It is an important and beautiful documentation of Malaysia, the state of our country, the feeling of our people, and the sense of nationhood. It is the perfect reflection of the 1Malaysia concept.”
>Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen YenMinister of Tourism, Malaysia
“Malaysia, your new arttourism destination”
1MALAYSIA CONTEMPORARY ART TOURISM
The Penang chapter of 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism (MCAT), “IN-SIGHT PENANG” features 20 exhibitions by participating galleries at different venues throughout September 2011. This is the second time that Penang has been chosen as one of the main venues for MCAT following the success of last year’s “Sparkles in Penang 2010”.
For the past few years, Penang has been the venue for many enticing contemporary art exhibitions and artworks by local, national and international artists. As the birth-state of modern art in Malaysia, Penang is steadily claiming it’s place as a fertile hub for contemporary art in this region. As a historical state known for its rich variety of cross-cultural heritage, Penang offers her own unique flavour of contemporary art practice. Sparks of new, innovative, fresh and insightful approaches have also been witnessed in many parts of Penang for the past ten years. These insightful practices have been mostly propelled by younger generation of more experimental contemporary artists with support from local institutions, art galleries, NGO’s and special-interest groups. Penang now is a state to behold when it comes to contemporary art practice.
IN-SIGHT PENANG will take off during a 3 days carnival, scheduled to take place at No. 57 Macalister Building, Penang. It will be complimented by interactive public programmes such as artists talks, art workshops, art race and many other forms of fun learning activities to engage various sections of the public.
So, come and visit Penang. While you are in Penang, make sure you get an “IN-SIGHT” of what this unique island can offer you through its vibrant contemporary art scene.
Salam 1Malaysia from us,1MCAT: IN-SIGHT PENANG 2011 TEAM

Project TitleText and Diagram in cognition, to cognize in texts and diagrams.
Project Duration1st – 30th September 2011
SynopsisText in today’s context is essentially the wording in published/online writings that give shape to form and meaning of ideas. There are but many ways to decipher interpret and understand the writings and messages from authors of texts. What about text in visual art? Text in visual art generates detailed explication of the works of art, narrating and elaborating further the intention(s) and concepts of the artist(s). It is not limited to socio-economic and political connotations. It also allows for further discourses and multiple trajectories with which visuals may be discoursed, positioned and interpreted.
Encoding has possibly transformed the way messages, or text is interpreted. Structurally, the ‘text’ becomes metaphorically embalmed, possibly necessitating new methods of breaking codes. As in a piece of abstract painting, refers as the artist’s ‘text’ to express and convey his/her messages; through the study of formalistic quality of artwork. If the formalistic elements are tool(s) or ‘text’ that makes meaning to a piece of painting; scientifically they are similar to a set of computer database. Those visual databases are graphically plotted, diagrammed and mapped into a graph and a chart format to show multiple layers of information. Diagram is another visual form that shares similar function as ‘text’ does. Again, what happens when diagram is the work of art? Making interlocution between research and art making, this exhibition may be seen as an attempt to integrate the very contrary practises within the field of visual art.
“Text and Diagram in cognition, to cognize in texts and diagrams” is participated by 4 artists/researchers, namely Hasnul Jamal Saidon, Dr. Izmer Ahmad, Kelvin Chuah and Liew Ting Chuang, who are affiliated as staffs or postgraduate students of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The idea of presenting a conceptual show like this in an institution creates exciting possibilities for future collaborations.

SynopsisThis exhibition, Cats & Dogs, celebrates our four-legged friends and features the artwork of a group of artists from different parts of Malaysia, working in a range of mediums. From the digital art and canvasses of urban, graffiti artists from KL and Borneo, to the exquisite Chinese brush paintings of Penang-based Ch’ng Kiah Kiean, the exhibition is organized in aid of the Langkawi animal shelter, LASSie. LASSie receives, rehabilitates and cares for neglected, abused and needy cats and dogs, and operates an animal clinic with the objective of sterilizing the stray cat population of the island. LASSie is a non-profit venture, staffed by volunteers, and the gallery proceeds from the exhibition will go towards improving the lives of unwanted animals.

Project Title“The Colours of Life” Art and Photography Exhibition 2011
Project Duration 10th – 30th September 2011
SynopsisEveryone experiences the world in different ways and see colours around us in different ways. It is to our great delight and blessing that creative people are able to share what they see, feel and think about colours. How do artists and photographers see, experience and interpret the colours of the world we live in? The art pieces and photographs selected for the Colours of Life exhibition will enable the public to share the unique colour experiences of artists Lee Long Looi, Ong Choon Hoo, Salleh Dawam, Tew Nai Tong, Teoh Kai Suan, Yong Look Lam and photographers Chan Jan Hoe, Ryan Tang, Jessen Lim, Kelvin Tan, Nicholas Loh, Chua Boon Keat, Daniel Yap, Jordan Lye, Jonathan Han, Choo Beng Teong, Ady Yakon, Michael Sng, Bayz Beh, Gee Boon Chan, Tan Kah Hong, Milan Teh, Justin, Thow, Harvey Loh, Kelly Liew, Chua Chee Eam, Alyssa Khoo, Eh Hock Lai, Jason Matthew Tye, Lee Kim How and Max Lim.
Life is not lived in black and white. Those who are blessed with the gift of sight often take for granted that they are surrounded by colours. The work of these artists and photographers will enable us to take away a different perspective on colours and make us reflect upon the colours in our own lives.
