Teenagers in many countries do volunteer work. They sometimes

even volunteer in other countries. The following is a letter from

an American teen volunteer in Guatemala.

Dear Mom and Dad,

Its strange to sit and write a real letter instead of sending ane-mail. In this village in Guatemala, theres only one telephone and

no one has got a computer.

When I arrived at the village, I was shocked. Theres no electricity

and no bathrooms in some of the houses. Im staying in a small room

with Harry, another volunteer. We use oil lamps to light our room.

There are five volunteers here two boys and three girls. Harry and

I are helping to build a school. Its hard work but I feel Im doing

something really important. In the afternoons, we organise fun

activities for the children and in the evenings, I have a meal with

a family from the village. Their food is very spicy, but Im startingto like it a lot.

Before I came, I was worried because I didnt speak Spanish very

well, but Im learning quickly. People in the village ask us a lot of

questions about life in the USA. They also want to know about

celebrities.

I know that volunteering for a few weeks wont make a big change

in this village, but it feels big to me. Im helping other people, but

Im also gaining a lot from being a volunteer. Im learning about

a different culture, meeting new people and having unusual

experiences.

Next week, were finishing the first part of the school and theres

going to be a party in the village. Ill take photos of everyone at the

party.
