PARISH LIFE AND MINISTRY
Evening Prayer 2015 THIS MONDAY August 10, 2015
7:00 P.M.—Rectory Lawn
At each Evening Prayer, we will hear God’s word broken open and shared by members of our parish community. This Monday, Robert Becker, will preach.
On the nights of Summer Evening Prayer, the OLPH Novena Prayers will be prayed at 6:30 P.M. in the Church. Exposition of the Blessed Sacra-ment will not be held on these nights so that all may participate in Evening Prayer.
I am happy to announce that an Associate Pastor has been assigned to replace Fr. Ethel. Fr. Fidelis Ezeani, a priest of the Diocese of Orlu, Nigeria, will arrive at OLPH on Mon-day, August 10. We're very happy to welcome Fr. Fidelis, as this will now still leave us with three priests, as Fr. Alfred completes his studies in the months ahead and prepares to return home. (Our new Mass schedule, which goes into effect in January, was devised with the thought of having three, not four, priests assigned here.) We wish many blessings to Fr. Fidelis in his priestly ministry here and as he transitions into the life of our parish in the weeks ahead.

Monday, August 24 at 7:00pm
The Lost Boy tells the story of Luke 2:39-52. Mary and Joseph lose track of twelve-year-old Jesus for three days, and when they finally find him, he is sitting in his “Father's house” demonstrating with his questions a great understanding of God. Within the musical is a reassuringly human message: even parents chosen by God can lose a child; even a perfect child can give his parents anxiety. The message is sure to comfort anyone who has ever been a parent, a child, or even those who have misplaced Jesus for a while.

FAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFE
Our Family Life Ministry is inviting everyone in the parish to get ready for Pope Francis’ visit by giving him a big OLPH wel-come! How? By using Flat Francis! You can download Flat Francis by going to www.olphlindenhurst.org. Then we want all to take pictures of themselves with Flat Fran-cis. We want to see selfies, family pictures, group shots, youth meetings, ministry meetings, music camp, Evening Prayer, choirs and service projects. Send those pictures to [email protected]. Then in September, we’ll gather after the 9:30 A.M. Mass for a video montage of all of the pictures and a brief overview of why Pope Francis’s visit to the church is so important. Start downloading and taking pictures today!!!

PRAYER AND WORSHIPPRAYER AND WORSHIPPRAYER AND WORSHIPPRAYER AND WORSHIP
HOLY HOUR FOR PEACEHOLY HOUR FOR PEACEHOLY HOUR FOR PEACEHOLY HOUR FOR PEACE In response to Bishop Murphy’s call for parishes to urgently pray for peace because of all the unrest in the world, please join us for a special Holy Hour de-voted to praying for world peace within our own country and throughout the world. This Holy Hour for Peace, with prayers focusing on the intention of peace, will be held on the second, third and fourth Sunday evenings of the month from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Holy Hour of Reparation which has been held on the first Sunday of the month will con-tinue every first Sunday evening as usual, with the prayers that are usually said for that first Sunday Ho-ly Hour.
Prayer for PeacePrayer for PeacePrayer for PeacePrayer for Peace Following Bishop Murphy’s request, we are asked to pray this prayer privately, and we are encouraged to use this prayer as a part of all meetings and gatherings held here at OLPH.
Lord Jesus Christ, who are called the Prince of Peace, Who are yourself our peace and our reconciliation,
Who so often said ‘Peace to you’, Grant us peace!
Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice and brotherly love.
Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace.
Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth become as brothers and sisters.
May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign al-ways over us all. AMEN
Mary, Queen of Peace, Pray for us! (Pope Saint John XXIII)

Making our Church Making our Church Making our Church Making our Church
Beautiful for GodBeautiful for GodBeautiful for GodBeautiful for God!!!!
Do you like to watch Home and Garden TV? Do you like to arrange and design plants and flowers? Does your house look like a florist? IF so, we may have the ministry for you! Doesn’t our Church look wonderful? It often looks like the “place to be” because of the dedi-cated parishioners who care for the plants and flowers each week. Can you spare some time on a Friday after-noon? Do you like to water, straighten up, clean up, and make our church even more beautiful? THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO DO IT! This is a great opportunity for retired parishion-ers and stay-at-home moms and dads (the kids can help too!) Interested? Please contact Rosaleen Walters at 631.226.3575 for more information.
The Way You Are Dressed The Way You Are Dressed The Way You Are Dressed The Way You Are Dressed DOES MatterDOES MatterDOES MatterDOES Matter!!!!
Please dress appropriately for Mass during the summer months. Attire that is meant for the beach, barbecues, boat or athletic field is inappropriate for Mass and is disre-spectful to the Lord as we offer ourselves to Him through the sacred actions in which we are engaged. It is also disrespectful to one’s brothers and sisters in the community. Your coopera-tion in continuing to dress up and dress ap-propriately for Mass during the summer weather is appreciated.

Pass It Forward… Become a Catechist!Become a Catechist!Become a Catechist!Become a Catechist! Do you love your faith? Do you enjoy sharing your faith with others? Do you like working with young people to get them excited about their relationship with Christ?
Do you have the joy of the Gospel in your heart and spirit?
Over 1150 children and young people, Levels 1 through 8, will sign up this fall to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow by becoming a catechist for Faith Formation.
With classes offered Saturday mornings, Monday evenings and Wednesday afternoons and evenings you are almost sure to find a time that fits your schedule. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well!
As Pope Francis put it, “Don’t let lack of training stop you from evangelizing.” We provide you with training, materials, and support. We still have 3 classes open in Session 3 (11:30-12:30). Won’t you help?
If interested or for more information, contact [email protected] or call (631)226-7725.
OLPH YOUTH SERVICE CORPS There is such a great need for service in the life of our parish and often a huge number of young people who want to help those in need. The Service Corps is one way to make this connection.
Last year, over 100 middle and high school teens and college young adults assisted on projects ranging from the Community Meal to Vacation Bible Camp to the St. Bernard League, and assisting parishioners in need and more!
Here’s how it works: 1. ANY middle school, high school and college aged students send their contact information to Fr. John at [email protected] (You do not need to already belong to any OLPH existing Youth Ministry groups.)
2. As requests for help come from or come into our parish, you’ll be contacted to see if you can help. 3. If you can help with a particular project, great! If not, no problem. You’ll be contacted for the next one!
This is also a great way to meet high school and middle school service requirements as you are reaching out to those within our own local and parish community. By serving through the OLPH Youth Service Corps, you are also connecting and building relationships within our own OLPH community.
SIGN UP TODAY Complete the form or by e-mail Fr. John at [email protected].

In this Gospel the love that Jesus reveals through the symbol of the cross is: self-giving, sacrificial healing, forgiv-ing, in solidarity with the weak, confident in the power of God. During the hot summer months many of the elderly, especially those who are sick, are not able to find relief from the heat. Please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul bring respite and hope to them.
SUPPORT THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
The OLPH Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Memorial Cards are a wonderful way to honor the dearly departed while benefitting the less fortunate in our community. A beautiful “Living Memorial” Card will be sent acknowledging your donation to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Donation forms are available on the pew ledges, in the SVDP Food Pantry (9am –12noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 1:30 pm—3pm Saturday) or at the Rectory.

Proverbs 9:1-6
The life spoken of in Proverbs is this-worldly, consisting of enjoying health and long life, possessing wealth, good reputation, and a family. But such a life cannot be attained without God’s help. Remembering that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 1:7), this chapter reiterates the stark contrast between wisdom and folly, here personified as the mistresses of two houses who each invite all to be their guests. Wisdom’s invitation comes first (vv. 1–6). She invites humanity to a banquet at her great house, the seven pillars of which most likely symbolize wholeness or perfection. The dinner has been prepared with the best food and wine, and all are welcome. The ig-norant or immature who visit there will be transformed at her table. Ephesians 5:15-20
As Paul tells the Ephesians, you cannot live your life as a Christian by going along with the general character of the world around you, which promotes escapism when things get difficult. But in contrast to that, he says, satisfy that need for something to stimulate and strengthen you by being filled with the Spirit, and seek out fellowship with other believers, for that is God's provision for this need in human life. John 6:51-58
When Jesus teaches His disciples that His flesh and blood are to be given for the life of the world, many desert Him. They know that He is not speaking figuratively, but literally. Jesus will offer Himself, His flesh and blood, once and for all as the Lamb of God for the sins of the world. But the fruit of that sacrifice is what we are to literally eat and drink so that His life may be sus-tained in us: the gift of Himself given to us in the Eucharist.
Readings for the Week Take time each day to read the daily readings of the Church.

Gospel Reflection Questions….
After reading next Sunday’s readings and Gospel, take some time to pray on them before you come to Mass. Use the questions below to aid your reflection.
1. When people love each other they want to
be together. Explain the words “Whoever
eats my flesh remains in me and I in him” in
this light. Stating it many different ways,
how many times did Jesus suggest that the
crowd “eat this bread” in Sunday’s Gospel?
If we eat at the table of the Lord will he give
himself to us and give us eternal life?
2. Pope Francis commented on the Gospel in
which learned Jews listening to Jesus argue
among themselves, asking, “How can this
man give us his flesh to eat?” He explained
below who are the ones that respond only
with the head. According to Francis can we
correctly interpret the Gospel purely through
the intellect without regard to love and beau-
ty?
They are the great ideologues. These
ideologues cut off the road of love,
and also that of beauty. All a matter of
intellect! When ideology enters into
the church, when ideology enters into
our understanding of the Gospel, we
understand nothing. Ideologues falsify
the Gospel. Every ideological interpre-
tation, wherever it comes from—from
one side or the other—is a falsification
of the Gospel. And these ideologues—
we have seen them in the history of the
Church—end up being intellectuals
without talent, ethicists without good-
ness. And let’s not even speak of beau-
ty, because they understand nothing of
that.
