LITERARY PHENOMENON
The International Book Fair in Krakow, a cyclical event dedicated to the publishingand bookshopsector, has been organized byTargi w Krakowie Ltd. in Krakow since
1997. The Fair, which falls into the category of readership promotion, is open to thegeneral public. Exhibitors include: Polish and foreign publishing houses, bookwarehouses, bookshops, cultural institutions, associations related to the Polishbook market, distributors of electronic media dedicated to readers, printing com-panies and paper producers. The International Book Fair in Krakow hosts over600 exhibitors and 50 000 book lovers (booksellers, book distributors, printers, librarians, literary agents, translators, limners) each year.
The International Book Fair in Krakow – the biggest event of this type in Poland– is an iconic event in the city, a promotion zone for good books, a venue for
encounters, exchanges of thoughts and discussion. In 2013 Krakow was awar-ded the prestigious UNESCO City of Literature title as one of seven such cities
in the world and only the second one located in a non-English speaking country. This makes Krakow the perfect location for an international publishing and reader-
ship event. The Book Fair in Krakow gained this international dimensionas of its 18th edition in 2014 and is known as the International
Book Fair in Krakow.
DEVELOPMENT AND CREATIVENESS
– KEY ASSETS OF THE EVENT
The International Book Fair in Krakow is famous for its diversity. The area of the Fair isdivided into thematic sections: University Publishing Houses, Religious PublishingHouses, New Media, Local Homelands (emphasizing the importance of micro-regions: their cultural and linguistic identity, tradition and specificity) and the Children’s Book Parlour. Year after year the Fair’s organisers has surprised
exhibitors and visitors by initiatives aimed at making the event more modern and attractive. Such actions include book writing with Herta Müller,
distributing booklets on trains, collective reading aloud of a poem byCzesław Miłosz, collaborative shooting of a film entitled “I read
because…”, a reading marathon based on JulianTuwim’s poem “Lokomotywa” and a self-portrait

For many years the International Book Fair in Krakowhas generated a significant response among visitors.
Piotr Marciszuk, the former President of the EuropeanFederation of Publishers, stated that the International
Book Fair in Krakow is currently the largest countrywidepublishing and bookshop event. With the visitor in mind,
the publishers and organisers prepare an extensive additio-nal program. It includes the finals of the major Polish
literary contests and competitions, industry debatesand discussions, as well as meetings with more
than 500 authors from Poland and abroad. TheBook Fair formula is based on the idea of a book
festival throughout the entire city. Meetings withauthors, literary happenings, theatre performances, conferences, concerts and exhibitions take place outsidethe event venue as well. Being a celebration of literatureand readers, the Book Fair is also a place for meetings andconferences held by librarians, industry associations (publi-shers and bookshop owners), a forum for debates on thefuture of books, a platform for the exchange of experien-ces and a place for networking and collaboration.
