FROM THE RECTOR 19 October 2014 Dear Friends, ‘Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.’ As we celebrate our Dedication Festival this Sunday, we are challenged to look at whether we are giving back to God what is his due, and whether our lives reflect the faith we profess. The celebration of the anniversary of a church building’s dedication is always also the celebration of the re-dedication of the community of faith that the church building shelters and symbolises. As God’s people in this place, may we be renewed and recommitted in our task and calling. May our light so shine that others are drawn to the light, the true light, which is Jesus Christ. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Dedication Festival: This Sunday the Parish celebrates our Dedication Festival, followed by lunch in the Parish Centre. (A low-key Eucharist will be offered at 8:00am for those who are unable to come to the main celebration.) Please join us in this Parish celebration.

Old  Time  Silent  Movie  Afternoon! For those of us who remember, the Saturday Afternoon Silent Movies to see Charlie Chaplin at the Orpheum, with accompaniment from the Wurlitzer Organ, were a great treat. For sixpence you could buy an ice cream and a bag of lollies, and still have enough change to buy some bubble gum and catch the tram home.

Come to St John’s on Saturday 25 October at 3:00pm for a nostalgic journey to recreate those memories. Silent films, (titles to be announced), will be shown by “Butch” our guest projectionist. The show will be accompanied by Ian Sell (master organ builder) on the new St John’s Theatre Organ as you have never heard it before.

Suggested donation: $5 towards the organ fund. For information, please call the office 9971 8694 (Mon-Fri 9:30am-2:00pm), or send a message to

[email protected]

All Souls Day: On Sunday morning 2 November and Monday 3 November at 7:30pm, a special Commemoration of all the Departed will be held. Please write the names of those to be prayed for at the All Souls’ Requiem Mass on the list at the back of the church.

Adult Baptisms will be celebrated at the 10:00am Eucharist on Sunday 9 November. Please pray for Susie and Alistair as they make this important step.

Children’s Disco: St John's Playtime is hosting a Children's Disco on Saturday 15 November, 3:00-5:00pm in the Parish Centre. Bring your children or grandchildren along, ages up to seven years old. Come and enjoy watching them having fun dancing to the music. All welcome. Entry $10 per family for the Organ Fund. Contact Lynette Johnson 0408 254 125 if you need more information. Christmas Charity Gifts

With Christmas approaching all too quickly, many parishioners are starting to think of gifts for friends and relations, who seem to have everything they need. It is becoming quite popular now to purchase a gift card from a Charity instead of an actual present. Anglicare has gift cards to help families in crisis and charities like Oxfam and Care Australia also have a wide variety. Act for Peace (one of the missions we support) has this year introduced a brand new gift catalogue called “Gifts For Peace”. There are various priced gifts to choose from, for example: a vegetable garden for farmers in Zimbabwe and Myanmar, School supplies for girls in Afghanistan, food for refugees in Myanmar, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, or health care items for mothers and babies in conflict-affected countries. There are gifts ranging from $10 to $450. Once your order is placed you receive a beautiful greeting card with room for a personal message to send to your recipient. The card also contains a personal story so loved ones can see the difference their gift will make to people whose lives have been torn apart by war. Catalogues are available from the office and need to be returned direct to Act for Peace by 13 December.

Freedom Sunday 19 October: The Most Reverend Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury has encouraged churches around the world to get involved in a global day of worship, prayer and action to stop human trafficking. "This is a grave crime against humanity, a form of modern day slavery and a profound violation of the intrinsic dignity of human beings; it is intolerable that millions of fellow human beings should be violated in this way, subjected to inhuman exploitation and deprived of their dignity and rights. This outrage concerns each one of us, because what affects one part of humanity affects us all. Virtually every part of our world is touched in some way by the cruelty and violence associated with this criminal activity.” Please see the “Not for Sale” notice in the lobby.
