WHAT CAMARO IS Chevy Camaro. The name is one of the most respected in the sport coupe market, thanks to its clean styling, outstanding performance and racing heritage. And, for more than 30 years, Camaro has remained true to its muscle car image. Not all the contenders in this market can make the same claim. Available as both a standard or Z28 Coupe or Convertible, Camaro clearly identifies itself as a genuine American sports car, with such hallmark characteristics as a dramatic low hoodline, a steep windshield angle and a short rear deck with integral spoiler. For 1998, there’s a new look and new power for Camaro. A redesigned hood and front fascia treatment give a more refined appearance. And beneath that new hood, there’s now a version of the LS1 small block V8, standard for Z28 models, that pumps out 305 horsepower and 335 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is a modified version of the small block that powers the 1998 Corvette. The 3800 V6 SFI remains standard on Camaro Coupe and Convertible, producing an impressive 200 horsepower and 225 lb.-ft. of torque. Camaro also provides a comfortable interior, thanks to such standard features as air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with cassette player, a center console with lots of storage space and cloth reclining front bucket seats (leather is optional) with integral headrests. Safety is an important part of Camaro as well. Standard features such as driver and front- passenger air bags, 4-wheel ABS, Daytime Running Lamps and steel safety-cage construction combine to give Camaro drivers peace of mind. As it has from its debut for the 1967 model year, Camaro continues to receive positive press throughout the industry. Consumers Digest gave Camaro a “Best Buy” recommendation for 1997, and Camaro made Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine “Passenger Cars Between $18,000 and $25,000 Worth A Look” list for 1997. Camaro Protects ItselfFrom Thieves

Camaro comes standardwith the highly effective PASS-Key II theft-deterrent system.

PASS-Key II has a sensor inthe vehicle’s ignition lock thatmeasures the resistor value of akey when it is inserted into theignition. If the correct key isnot used, or if someoneattempts to bypass the system, the vehicle will remain inoperable for approximatelythree minutes, even if the correct key is subsequentlyused.

Camaro Has its OwnGuardian Angel

There was a time whenCamaro topped the list of themost-stolen cars in America.Well, times have changed, thanks in no small part to the standard PASS-Key II theft-deterrent system.

In a recent study, Camaronot only dropped from thenumber one most-stolen position, it no longer evenplaces in the top 25!

A long time Camaro rival,Ford Mustang, comes in atnumber five (1995 model). Notsurprising, as Mustang doesn’toffer the standard level of theftdeterrence provided by theCamaro PASS-Key II system.

INTERIOR FEATURES (contd.)

ABS — Unlearning Old Habits

Buying a car with anti-lock brakes may require drivers unfamiliar with thisfeature to “unlearn” pastbraking habits. Drivers accustomed to traditionalbrake systems have beentaught to “pump” the brakepedal when braking hard onslippery surfaces to keep thecar’s wheels from locking up.ABS is designed to pump thebrakes faster than is manuallypossible, automatically adjusting the brake pressure ateach wheel independently toavoid wheel lockup. All the driver has to do is maintainpressure on the brake pedal. To become familiar with the system, drivers should take the vehicle to an unoccupiedparking lot (preferably onewith slick pavement) and practice sudden hard brakingmaneuvers to get a feel for thebenefits of enhanced steeringcontrol ABS provides.

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURINGAll Camaro models are manufactured at

the General Motors assembly plant in Ste.Therese, Quebec, Canada. Originally constructed in 1965, the plant was completelyrefitted to produce the fourth-generationCamaro in 1993. Camaro benefits from thisnew precision tooling and a highly skilledworkforce.

The employees are organized into teams, and each department functions as a separatebusiness unit committed to making its particular operation defect-free.• The plant’s state-of-the-art waterborne

paint system produces a bright color palette of paint that has a high level of fade-and-weather resistance.

• Before this unique system is employed, theentire exterior of the Camaro body is thoroughly cleaned with ostrich feathersto remove all dust particles. After experimenting with a number of differentmaterials, both synthetic and organic, designers found, somewhat surprisingly,

that ostrich feathers were best suited forproviding a smooth, clean surface for thepaint application. Several manufacturing strategies were used to streamline Camaroengine designs and simplify the manufac-turing process. A team of engineers andmanufacturing employees looked for waysto maximize the commonalities betweenthe engines. Their teamwork resulted inthe use of a common air conditioningcompressor and air cleaner, a similaraccessory drive (with shared connectionsand attachments) and identical main androd bearing fits. These changes improvedthe engine and vehicle-assembly process,as well as serviceability.

BODY STRUCTUREAll Camaro models share a body structure

that includes a fully unitized steel frame,steel-reinforced composite body panels andhoneycomb-constructed front and rearbumpers for added strength and durability.Extensive anti-corrosion measures include theuse of composites, two-side-galvanized steeland electrodeposition primer (ELPO).

Camaro makes extensive use of dent-resistant, rustproof body panels:• The roof, doors, hatch and spoiler are

made of sheet-molded compound (SMC),a material comprised of finely groundglass in a polyester resin

• Reaction Injection Molded (RIM) process— reinforced with mica — is used for frontfender and fascia production

• Rust-resistant, two-side-galvanized steel is used for the rear-quarter panelsand hood.

Camaro ConvertibleCamaro Convertible is manufactured

online at the Ste. Therese assembly plant. The convertible’s rigid body structure provides a solid foundation that minimizesflexing and squeaks and rattles, while providing precise handling and steering.• The convertible top features a standard

full headliner, a glass rear window andan electric rear-window defogger.

*Maintenance needs vary with different uses and driving conditions. See owner’s manual for more information.

Camaro Owners SeeOrange — And Love It

Extended-life coolant, goodfor 5 years or 150,000 miles, isstandard on all Chevy models. This special coolant is silicone-free and should increase waterpump life and improve corro-sion protection for aluminumengine components. It is readily differentiated from itspredecessor (green color) by itsbright orange color. The twoshould never be mixed, ascoolant life will be shortened.

Among The Best InThe World

Proving that Camaro truly isa world-class sports car, Ward’sAuto World recently named the3800 V6 engine one of the top-ten engines in the world ...again, that’s in the entire world.

That’s what Camaro Coupeand Convertible have underthe hood, and that’s part of the reason why Camaro is such agenuine sports car.

ENGINES (contd.)5.7 Liter LS1 V8 SFI Engine

Camaro now features the impres-sive technology of the LS1 5.7Liter V8 engine. Standard onCamaro Z28 Coupe and

Convertible, the LS1 takes Camaro to anexciting new level of power and performance.

One of the major engineering goals inadapting the LS1 engine for use in Camarowas to keep as much of the performancecharacteristics as close to the Corvette application as possible. However, it was nec-essary to make some modifications to accommodate the available space under theCamaro hood.LS1 V8 Engine Technical Features:• 305 horsepower at 5200 rpm• 335 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm• The LS1 features an aluminum engine

block that is both strong and lightweight• A small bore and long stroke provide a

very rigid, durable design, with ample room for cooling

• A “deep skirt” extends down past the bearing caps, where two bolts tie the bearing caps directly to the engine block from the side. This helps give the engine outstanding durability and reduces noise and vibration

• Replicated cylinder head ports optimize airflow in the engine, contributing to overall performance

• The intake manifold is made of composite materials that help maximize airflow to the engine for enhanced performance

• Overall driveability has been improveddue to a linear throttle cam

• Lightweight pistons and rods allow engineers to tune the engine for high rpm, achieving maximum power from the 5.7-Liter displacement

• The valvetrain features in-line valves, rocker arms and pushrods for reduced stress and friction. This also boosts overall fuel economy and durability

• Sequential Fuel Injection aids combustion efficiency by optimizing fuel distribution

• Individual ignition coils for each cylinder provide high-energy ignition for maximized combustion, low emissions and enhanced durability

• A 22 percent larger volumemuffler improves overallexhaust efficiency

• The air conditioning compressor is mounted on the lower right side of the engine for efficient packaging and noise reduction

• A specific contour die cast-aluminum oil pan contributes to structural rigidity and improved sealing over the former LT1

• A standard oil-level sensor alerts the driver to a low engine-oil condition whenas little as one quart is needed, instead ofwhen the crankcase is virtually dry andengine damage is imminent

• A revised fuel injector rail helps reduce evaporative emissions for cleaner operations

• The generator is mounted low on the left side of the engine for noise reduction and improved belt life

• An improved Powertrain Control Module (PCM) over last year provides more efficient operation

• Packaging requirements produced a specific accessory drive, a revised air induction system and a unique air-gap exhaust manifold

• An improved fuel system over last year keeps fuel cooler in the tank for less fuel odor during hot-weather driving

• A revised fuel line system eliminates hotfuel from being returned to the fuel tank.Cooler fuel in the tank helps to improvehydrocarbon emissions

• Platinum-tip spark plugs (first scheduled maintenance at 100,000 miles*) provide dependable service

Corvette-Inspired V8Power

Camaro Z28 receives a noticeable boost over last year’sLT1 V8, with the addition of theLS1 under the hood. Known, ofcourse, for its impressive perfor-mance in the fifth-generationCorvette, the LS1 V8 offersenough power to satisfy eventhe most demanding Camaroowner.

Here’s a look at some of thepower improvements:Engine HorsepowerLT1 V8 285 @ 5200 rpmLS1 V8 305 @ 5200 rpmA net improvement of 20 horsepower.Engine TorqueLT1 V8 325 lb.-ft. @ 2400 rpmLS1 V8 335 lb.-ft. @ 4000 rpm

Not only does the LS1 provide more power, it also has advantages in several key areasover last year’s LT1:• Quieter performance• Improved durability• Faster engine warm-up• Overall better driveability.

Emissions Control Is AGas — Literally

Many believe emissions control systems detract fromengine performance andreduce gas mileage. It’s not so.Surprisingly, the OBD II emissions control system onCamaro can actually improve overall vehicle performance bymonitoring vehicle systems thatimpact emissions. What’s more,OBD II checks more emissions-related subsystems than the firstOBD systems, while looking forperformance deteriorationrather than failure.

ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS SECOND GENERATION (OBD II)

On-board diagnostics for Camaro is highly sophisticated, thanks to OBD II (On-Board Diagnostics Second Generation). • The system can mean faster repairs for

consumers. Take better engine diagnosis, for example. In low-level engine misfire, there can be several causes, such as badfuel, improper maintenance, cracked sparkplug insulation or plugged fuel injectors. These can all lead to a misfire diagnosisthat’s picked up by OBD II.

• OBD II functions by using a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to monitor fuel delivery, ignition timing and the emissionssystem to detect performance deteriorationor malfunction.

• If a problem is detected, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored and indicates the type of fault detected.

• The PCM stores and retrieves diagnostic messages to help technicians fix problems quickly and accurately.

• The PCM alerts the driver by illuminating the “Service Engine Soon” light when it detects a deterioration in the performance of any of the monitored components.

• Unlike first-generation systems that sig-naled only system failures, OBD II alertsthe driver to have the vehicle servicedbefore experiencing a possible breakdownor incurring more expensive repairs.

SEQUENTIAL FUEL INJECTION (SFI)

Sequential Fuel Injection, standard on all 1998 Camaro models, is a far cry fromyesterday’s fuel-control systems such asElectronic Fuel Injection. SFI optimizes fueleconomy, power output and the ability tomeet today’s stringent emissions controlrequirements. • SFI’s secret is its high-precision fuel

control, which uses one injector and nozzle per cylinder for optimum cylinder-to-cylinder fuel distribution.

• Each injector is fired sequentially and timed to the intake cycle for accuracy and metering control. (With non-SFI engines, fuel is injected once per engine revolution through all injectors at the same time. With SFI, the timing is much more precise, thus performance improves across the board.)

• A mass airflow meter constantly measures the engine’s air requirements under varying conditions, such as changes in load, altitude and temperature. In an SFI system, the mass airflow meter is essentialfor accurate fuel delivery.

• The injector nozzle’s design and optimum location produce an effective spray patternthat contributes to the engine’s smooth idle and outstanding fuel efficiency.

ALL-SPEED TRACTION CON-TROL

Optional on Camaro Z28 Coupe andConvertible is an all-speed traction controlfeature that gives the driver greater control inall sorts of road conditions.

• A new ABS module with revisedcalibration allows for smoothoperation and improved performance.

• This sophisticated all-speed traction con-trol system works with the 4-wheel, anti-lock brake system to provide improvedtraction for improved acceleration andenhanced vehicle stability in slippery con-ditions (i.e. snow, ice or wet pavement).

• All-speed traction control system automat-ically engages when the vehicle is started, but can be disabled manually when addi-tional wheel slip is desired.

• All-speed traction control is calibrated toallow some wheel slip during accelerationif it is beneficial for the driving conditions.

• Individual rear brake control makes it possible to use the available traction on asplit coefficient (i.e., one rear wheel on slick pavement, one rear wheel on dry pavement).

5-Speed Manual TransmissionA Borg-Warner Automotive 5-speed

manual transmission is standard on CamaroCoupe and Convertible.

The 5-speed’s wide range of gear ratios(from 3.75:1 in first gear to 0.72:1 in fifth)allows the driver to select the best gear forany driving situation. The Overdrive fifthgear reduces engine rpm at cruising speed, thereby increasing fuel economy and reduc-ing wear.

The Camaro 5-speed transmission incorporates numerous features to help keepnoise and vibration to a minimum, includinga heavy-duty hydraulic transmission mount,a two-piece driveshaft, a tuned tailshaftdamper and a structural bellhousing withadditional bracing.

• A revised manual clutch systemwith concentric slave cylinderand over-center spring designgives better leverage at the

pedal than previous systems, improvingclutch effort.

6-Speed Manual Transmission A Borg-Warner Automotive 6-speed

manual transmission is optional on CamaroZ28 models. The 6-speed’s 2.66:1 ratio in firstgear provides high torque multiplication forquick initial acceleration; two Overdrive gears(0.74:1 in fifth gear and 0.50:1 in sixth gear)produce quiet, economical highway cruising. All 6-speed-equipped Z28 models have a3.42:1 rear-axle ratio.

• A revised manual clutch systemwith concentric slave cylinderand over-center spring designgives better leverage at the

pedal than previous systems, improvingclutch effort. The Camaro 6-speed transmission

incorporates a Computer-Aided GearSelection (CAGS) system. The CAGS system(sometimes called “skip shift”) is designed tomaximize fuel economy during normal driving situations by directing the shifter

from first gear to fourth gear under lightacceleration from a dead stop.• Rapid acceleration automatically cancels

the CAGS function.• A telltale lamp on the instrument panel

illuminates when the transmission is in the skip-shift “window.”

Key Features Of The High-Torque, Rear-Wheel-Drive Design Include:• A single-rail internal shift linkage,

designed for impressive shift feel and durability

• A fully synchronized reverse gear for shifting ease

• Needle bearings for all mainshaft gears for impressive shift performance, reducedfriction and durability

• Three heavy-duty tapered rolling bearingson the countershaft and two on the main-shaft provide geartrain support, durabilityand low noise

• Countershaft-mounted fifth-sixth gear synchronizers reduce noise and shift effort

• Internal oil passages — longitudinallydrilled through the mainshaft and countershaft — continually lubricategeartrain areas, for impressive longevity.

4L60-E 4-Speed ElectronicAutomatic Transmission

The Hydra-matic 4L60-E 4-speed electronically controlled automatic Overdrivetransmission is optional on all Camaro models. The 4L60-E’s “intelligent” electroniccontrols allow the transmission to match the engine’s performance.• Shift quality is maintained with a simple

on-off solenoid.

Where Did That JerkGo?

Chevrolet automatic transmissions, like the 4L60-E,provide owners with asmooth driving experience.Even in a sports car, some drivers want the convenience ofan automatic transmissionover the hands-on shifting of a manual. Time was, a smoothdriving experience was anexclusive feature of luxuryvehicles, and certainly not of asports car. No longer. Now,thanks to transmissions like the4L60-E, electronic shift controlhelps reduce what some used tocall a “somewhat jerky”operation. The electronic control makes possible verysmooth shift patterns at allvehicle speeds.

TRANSMISSIONS (CONTD)• The 4L60-E’s 298mm torque converter

features specially brazed turbine pumpblades designed to reduce fluid leakage, maximize efficiency and enhance durability.

• An abuse torque management system protects the powertrain by reducing theamount of energy and heat generated byfrequent severe shifts when a vehicle stuckin the snow or mud is “rocked.”

• The 4L60-E’s wide range of gear ratiosenhances both performance and economy. The 3.06:1 first-gear ratio provides hightorque multiplication for initial accelera-tion. The Overdrive 0.70:1 fourth gearreduces engine rpm at cruising speed, thereby reducing wear.

• The 4L60-E provides the precision and flexibility of electronic controls. Shiftpoints and shift smoothness are controlledby four solenoids that are connected to thePowertrain Control Module (PCM).

• The PCM acts as an interface between theengine and transmission, to provide thefeel of a virtually “seamless” powertrain.

• The PCM monitors engine and transmis-sion performance several times per secondto ensure smooth gear changes and propershift points.

• The 4L60-E senses and adapts to changesin altitude, barometric pressure andengine load, for maximum efficiency.

• The refined torque converter clutch con-trols provide nearly imperceptible clutch application and release.

• Electronic controls provide the security of “fail-safe” operation; if the controlsmalfunction for any reason, the transmis-sion will automatically default to operablegear ratios, enabling the driver to reach asafe location.

• The 4L60-E’s second-gear start feature provides an extra measure of control in slippery driving conditions. By engagingthe second-gear start button, (on V6equipped models only) the driver canreduce torque to the drive wheels, increas-ing control during initial acceleration onslippery surfaces.

• 4L60-E is factory-filled with long-life automatic transmission fluid will not needto be replaced for at least 100,000 miles under normal operating conditions* (Thishas an important environmental impact as well, since people will dispose of lesstransmission fluid.)

• The 4L60-E is fully OBD II compliant. ThePCM continuously monitors operating conditions, such as altitude and temperature, to determine the optimalshift points and provide a seamless linkbetween the vehicle and engine. The PCMcollects information about the operatingcondition of the 4L60-E and alerts the dri-ver with a “Service Engine Soon” light ifthere is a deterioration that could causethe vehicle to exceed acceptable emissionslevels.

• External seals use tight-fitting gaskets to prevent potential leakage.

• A two-piece case design features a unique360-degree bellhousing that completelyencases the torque converter assembly forincreased stiffness and low noise and vibration.

SUSPENSIONCamaro has a Short/Long Arm (SLA) front

suspension, which is designed to provide asmooth, controlled ride.

The upper control arms are mounted highin the body structure to reduce loads. The dampers, shock absorbers and springs are acoil-over-shock design with high-performancegas-pressure monotube de Carbon shockabsorbers.

• Front and rear shocks on all Camaro models are revalved to maintain optimum performance.

• New front spring rate onCamaro Coupe and Convertibleprovides optimum ride andhandling.

• The front spring rate on Z28 models provides smooth, stable performance.

*Maintenance needs vary with different uses and drivingconditions. See owner’s manual for more information.

SUSPENSION (CONTD)• New 15mm front stabilizer bar

on Camaro Coupe andConvertible helps reduce swayin curves.

Camaro has lightweight stamped-steellower control arms that incorporate severalinnovative design features. The front bushingand lower shock attachment are directly in-line with the wheel center. This unique layoutprovides a direct path through the controlarm for lateral cornering loads and permitsthe use of a harder bushing — withoutadversely affecting ride quality.

The rear suspension is a Salisbury axledesign with two trailing arms, a track bar anda torque arm. Like the front suspension, therear shock absorbers are hydraulic high-performance gas-pressure de Carbon monotubes.

• New rear spring rate onCamaro Coupe and Convertiblemodels help ensure a smoothride.

• The rear spring rate on Camaro Z28 models provides smooth, stable performance.

• The 19mm stabilizer bar on Camaro Z28helps minimize body sway. The de Carbon shock absorber’s monotube

structure is designed to maximize heat dissipation and fade-resistance, and providesthe largest possible working area for a givenoutside diameter, compared to conventionalshock absorbers. The result is a smooth ride at high performance levels.• Permanent pressurization is designed to

eliminate the formation of partial vacuums in the fluid that, when they collapse, can lead to metal damage.

• Separation of the oil and gas is designed toprevent aeration.

• Unique monodisc valve design allows forprecise valve settings and near-instantaneous reaction times.
