01 August 1992: “My first time in the Great Continent”

WE saw all American movies and cartoons. We wore all their jeans, jackets

and shirts. We dreamed seeing all cities with huge buildings, often thinking

about New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, especially Hollywood, Disneyland or

Disney World. Have you ever thought to leave your country to see

America, in the future? I thought about the USA, my dream became true.

My first time in the US, the Great Continent, 25 years ago.

It happened in August 1992!

Chapter 1

“New York is only New York.”

WE saw all American movies and cartoons. We wore all their jeans, jackets

and shirts. We dreamed seeing all cities with huge buildings, often thinking

about New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, especially Hollywood, Disneyland or

Disney World. Have you ever thought to leave your country to see

America, in the future? I thought about the USA; my dream became true.

01 August 1992. Leonardo Da Vinci Airport, Rome. “USA Holiday”. It was a

present from my parents for my sister, six years older than me, who took

the high school diploma one month before. Ready to take an aeroplane so

going to the “Great continent”. An Alitalia flight brought my family and me

from the Eternal City to the Big Apple, New York exactly. Nine hours of

flying mostly spent crossing the Atlantic Ocean for six hours, after leaving

the Portuguese coast.

Watching three movies and sleeping a little, are the only possible things to

do. Beauty and caring of Alitalia company’s flight attendants give to all

passengers very sweet hours of flight.

New York, welcome to America, welcome to my life, dear America.

American cars, very large, comfortable, especially when you sit down

inside of the TAXI. The unforgettable emotion to cross the Brooklyn Bridge,

saying Manhattan and the historic Twin Towers that were destroyed in

2001 by terrorism attack, unfortunately. The Ramada Hotel is the first stop

where we stayed during our first step of our lovely trip. It is in the centre

of New York, near Central Park.

Famous American buildings tell and describe to everyone, which are the

United States, their people and culture. Simple walking or shopping,

discovering New York, is the most relaxing moment that someone foreign

could receive in the holiday. Central Park; green, green, green, only green,

a lot of relaxing, sitting down and looking all dogs and children running

across the green park. State Building Empire, another unforgettable

emotion. It is waiting for you, to be seen from the top of its symbol.

Time Square; “another heart of New York’s city”. Seeing all skyscrapers is

an indescribable sensation. Great moments of your life that you have to

write into the page of your personal diary. The dream is only one, at that

moment: "leave your native country, changing your life so come here".

Discovering New York, learning to know a very different country, usually

paints your unforgettable travel as a sweet moment that gives an

important development to your personal life’s baggage.

Niagara falls, wonderful picture of my holiday! The weather was grey on

Sunday. However, we decide to go to visit Niagara Falls, leaving from New

York to Buffalo City with an American local flight, continuing the same

travel to Niagara Falls by local bus. Eating fish, especially salmon, is the

principal speciality of this romantic place, both from the United States of

America and Canada. All tourists or professional photographers could take

many pictures to remember their visit very well.

Unfortunately, the coming back in New York is terrible, a strong

nightmare: a thunderstorm has devastated our mind, and our plane has

many difficult to continue the same flight as well without any problems.

Turbulent weather is so strong that the same aeroplane danced a lot, so all

passengers thought of risking death, especially when a Stewart, after

giving some to drink us, exclaimed as, “Good luck”. A true nightmare that

we passed without any afraid, so we arrive in New York, finally.

Chapter 2

“Unforgettable New Orleans”

New Orleans, both Anglo-Saxon and French culture are mixed. The second

step of our travel around the US is started. The Bourbon Orleans is our

hotel; Vieux Carré is the French Quarter that we visit every day to discover

New Orleans, its origins and meeting with the same French culture.

Saloons, especially inside of the same French Quarter, are typical

restaurants where beers, T-bone steak, classic boiled potatoes or French

fries are always ready to be eaten. Steamboat Natchez, the famous boat

where all tourist passengers could cross the Mississippi River, seeing the

beautiful New Orleans’s landscape. “Café Dumont”; famous bar in New

Orleans, where is possible eating sweet Bignè with chocolate, coffee, milk

or tea.

New Orleans; the city that 21 years ago, exactly two years after my

American holiday, earned all first pages of world media due to the most

terrible story. Ilenia Carrisi, the first son of the Italian singers, Albano

Carrisi and Romina Power, the nephew of Tyron Power, disappeared while

she has lived in New Orleans.

A good deal of published news about this mystery, strong disputes

between Albano and Romina Carrisi who accused each other due to the

son’s disappearing until deciding together, at the same time, for their

separation so writing the word “THE END” of both their important love

story and singer career, together.

New Orleans, an important American town who wrote many and many

history pages due to independence day, the centre of the Colonialism,

historical period where a lot of poor black boys and men had to fight

against white people, a problem which is still devastating to all American

states, now. Many black people, between younger and men, killed by

police, different fights between the African community and the white

community and the last US President, Barack Obama, a black President,

who could see the drama with impotence because all American security is

managed only by all Departments of the Federal States.

Five days are enough to visit New Orleans but pay attention to walk inside

French quarter or others, alone. Pickpockets, burglars and drunks with bad

intention, could damage your holiday, transforming it in another sad

nightmare. Unfortunately, New Orleans is known, how all reporting of FBI

and local police say, as a dangerous city with a high level of crime

episodes. From New Orleans to Orlando, State of Florida. The romanticism

of New Orleans is a pleasure, so it is very difficult to leave again, forgetting

all sweet things you have seen.

Chapter 3

Orlando, Disney World: “Fun...dear fun”

Our travel continues quietly, Orlando the next stop. Our true next goal is

Disney World. A little country inside of the huge Continent. Disney World is

big as the Italian Umbria Region. Interesting and funny plays to try; it is

impossible to live a boring and empty day. Walking, walking, walking, and

only walking from early morning until 20-21 pm in the evening. Many

coffee rooms and restaurant, give you the possibility to find a relaxing

moment so breaking your long day.

“Sunny or rainy”. In the State of Florida, the weather could often change

itself during the day. However, all tourists usually continue their visit

without any problem, but “pay attention”: tiring is near! All people who

have the dream to go to Orlando with the intention to visit Disney World,

in addition could discover what it means having a tiring time and sore feet,

really. Could all women who go to Disney World wearing high heels shoes?

None! Only sports shoes to visit this fantastic place for long days, until

evening later.

However, although sport or other comfortable shoes, it’s mathematically

impossible to come back in a hotel without strong pain, some blisters and

the great need to receive a relaxing foot massage.

Russian mountains, Splash, the fantastic world of the Star Trek movies,

Indiana Jones, the nice meeting with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, a

little travel for 5-6 minutes inside in the space, discovering our stars and

planets, the entering inside of our human body, trying to understand how

is possible to live for a long time without any health problem. These are all

interesting days, understanding what Disney World is. If you come here,

you need about just one full week to visit it, very well. It’s impossible to

program the same visit to Disney World, also thinking to visit the Orlando

city. “Disney World”: a particular planet inside the great continent. It

needs much attention.

Disney World, Disneyland located in Los Angeles and Euro Disney in Paris,

born one year later, in 1993. What's the good? I both never saw

Disneyland and Euro Disney: my feedback about them could be very

unusual. At the same time, I can say that Disney World, near Orlando, is

huge, very full of funny moments, never boring, very stressful and tiring at

the end of your day. If you come here, enjoy your holiday.

Chapter 4

Miami Beach: “Delusion! Oh my God”

Orlando City-Miami. 300 kilometres the distance, 6 hours by train!

Terrible! If you think about special something of Miami Beach, your mind is

caught by relaxing, sweet and likely walking. Are you sure about it?

Delusion! Oh my God! The right answer! Sea such as first thing to be seen,

great luxury hotels after, and? There is not anything else interesting. It’s

the time to close our luggage, going to Miami Airport and coming back at

home. My family and I come back in Italy, kissed by big fortune. 24 hours

later our departure, the strong Andrew Hurricane arrived at Miami coasts.

American authorities decided to close the Airport. We lived the high risk to

be blocked for many days here, without any certainty to know when it

could be possible to come back in Rome.

13 August, “Our unforgettable holiday is finished”. Fortunately, we arrived

in the Eternal City with full of happiness and serenity. The funniest

moment of my travel in the US? New York, exactly on the top of the

Empire States Building, Disney World my second funniest moment after

the Big Apple. The saddest moment? Turbulent fly from Buffalo City to

New York Airport cause bad weather.

A sweet thought of this unforgettable travel? Beauty and elegance of all

American women, certainly! Either on the road or at the restaurant, they

love wearing elegant dresses: jackets, tight trousers, jeans or skirts with

elegant pairs of high heels shoes. The fashion of 23 years ago, was very

different from today. Sensuality’s women, between 30 and 55 years old,

was the supreme law in the Great Continent. Casual style has destroyed

womanhood, today. How could I describe the USA, perfectly? Not so

important! Just only truth: “countries that don’t leave your mind”.

MARCO CHINICO’ (Rome, 28 April 1979)

Italian from Rome (Italy), 38 years old. He has a law degree, exactly

graduated from the University of Camerino in October 2009.

He worked as a freelance journalist for online newspapers, since March
