On Thursday 29 August, American head coach Bob Johnson, 60, was diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent emergency surgery. He regained consciousness on Friday and was left partially paralyzed. He

could not speak, but sketched out a line-up and some strategy for this game v. Sweden with Team USA GM Craig Patrick. Johnson would never coach again and passed away on 26 November 1991…just 89 days after

being diagnosed. “(Bob Johnson) was on everybody’s minds,” said USA’s Tim Taylor. “Here’s a man in the hospital, battling for

his life and he’s worried about beating Sweden.” Brett Hull USA tumbled to the ice in the third period with a sprained left knee, left the game and did not

“I was playing for Czechoslovakia when we beat Team Canada (1-0) at the 1976 Canada Cup and I know what a great moment it was for our players and for our hockey program,” said Czech coach Ivan Hlinka.

“This win over the Russians is much the same.” “Beating the Russians is the best thing that can happen to a Czechoslovakian hockey player,” said

G Dominik Hasek TCH. “It’s even better than beating Canada. We played very well as a team in every area of the game. We did not have a player who did not play well.”

“The goalie was standing at the far post so I had to hit the short side,” said winning-goal scorer F Tomas

Sandstrom SWE. “The shot wasn’t that hard but I wanted to get it on the net and force him to make a save. Both teams lost the other night so this was a big game for both of us.” Sandstrom added that the Soviets,

troubled by political changes at home and the loss of players to the NHL, are not what they once were.

The winning goal went in when F Martin Rucinsky TCH tried to stop a pass across the slot and deflected the puck with his stick past netminder Dominik Hasek TCH

“Pure, blind luck! That’s all it was,” said F Christian Ruuttu FIN of the winning goal. “I figured Petri (Skriko)

would be breaking for the net on the other wing. I was in fairly deep for a shot so I tried to get the puck across so he could one-time it. Okay, it was a fluke goal, but I thought our team deserved a good bounce.

Usually in big tournaments, all the luck we have is bad. One lucky bounce and great goaltending! How many NHL games are decided that way over a season?” The goal was credited to Teemu Selanne because he was

the closest player to the puck when it went in. “What can you say after such a game and such a goal,” said Czech coach Ivan Hlinka. “Both teams gave

every ounce they had to the game. The defensive play was very strong and the goaltending, too. It is very difficult to lose on a small mistake.”

“We were asleep at the start and, in the end, it cost us the game,” said Czechoslovak coach Ivan Hlinka. “We

made some line changes in the second period and started to play our game, but we just couldn’t get the goal we needed.”

“Good goalies make the big saves at critical moments in a game and that’s what Mike did,” said USA acting

coach Tim Taylor, who replaced the ailing Bob Johnson. “We improved our defensive play, a fairly big achievement for a team of offensive players. But we also had an edge in other important areas – power play

and penalty killing.” Pat LaFontaine USA played his first tournament game for the American squad, after a hip injury

This victory guaranted the United States a spot in the tournament semi-finals. “We played as hard as

a team can play tonight,” said U.S. acting coach Tim Taylor. In order for the Soviets to make the tournament’s medal round, they must defeat Canada and Sweden

and Czechoslovakia must tie tomorrow.

The Soviets have only failed to make the medal round of one previous international tournament.

That was the 1987 IIHF U20 World Junior Hockey Championship in Czechoslovakia, when both the Soviets

and Canada were disqualified for brawling.

D Al MacInnis CAN was ejected in the second period for slashing F Alexei Zhamnov USSR across the mouth

This game presented some uncomfortable moments as F Eric Lindros CAN was playing in Quebec City. He was chosen first overall by the Nordiques in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, but refused to play for the

team. Prior to the game, at a hotel in Ste-Foy, QC, Eric’s parents (Bonnie and Carl), his agent Rick Curran, Nordiques’ director of player personnel Gilles Leger and Nordiques’ GM Pierre Page met with each other.

“They certainly expressed themselves and their feelings,” said Page. “It’s interesting to see how people react to pressure. It’s always emotional when we get together.”

“We had a tough time finding our emotion in this game, but we were able to come from behind on several occasions and earn a point in different fashion from what we’re used to,” said Canadian coach Mike Keenan.

The Soviet Union was actually eliminated from medal round before this tie, when Sweden defeated Czechoslovakia earlier in the day

Several hours before this game, the American players were read a letter from Bob Johnson, who is

fighting brain tumours in a Pittsburgh hospital. “The last line (of the letter) was ‘I only wish I was on a plane to Hamilton,’” said American interim coach Tim Taylor. “He told us to play with pride. He said that every

Canadian boy wants to grow up to be like Gretzky, and one day he hopes American children will want to grow up to be like the stars of this team.”

“It’s amazing that with everything he’s gone through, he could write a letter wishing he could be with us,”

said F Pat LaFontaine USA. “He is a great man.”

“I think the people will be genuinely interested in this series (Canada v. USA),” said F Dale Hawerchuk

CAN. “It will provide a flavour that’s never been there before.” “This game showed the characteristics that make up this team,” said Canada’s head coach Mike Keenan.

“This is a strong-willed, determined bunch.” “Overall, I think this is a better team than in ’87,” said F Wayne Gretzky CAN. “I don’t think we’re as

talented in the top three or four players as we were back then, but we can keep throwing five guys over the boards and playing relentlessly. As a team, I think we just overpowered the Swedes tonight.”

D Gary Suter USA drilled F Wayne Gretzky CAN face first into the boards at 8:48 of the second period. Gretzky left the game, with back spasms and a knee injury…and did not play again in this

tournament. “I didn’t see him coming,” said Gretzky during a 10-minute, post-game media availability. “I’m surprised

there wasn’t a penalty because I was only four feet from the boards, but I don’t think he tried to hurt me.” “It was an illegal hit, no doubt about it,” snorted Canadian coach Mike Keenan. “He was definitely hit from

behind with no chance to protect himself. You certainly don’t like to see something like that happen, and it’s unfortunate that it happened on an incident that was uncalled for.”

“If it hadn’t happened to the greatest player in the world, we wouldn’t be here talking about it,” said D Gary Suter USA. “He just didn’t see me coming. It was either hit him or probably give up a goal.”
