We fo l low ins t ruc t ions to dec la renothing. Helen has her avocadoes seized, but our casserole, smoked salmon andlettuce make it through. Other Taconic-ites are detected on the island, namely, Melanie Mulvihill, PeteCorsino, Alice Megaro, Carmelo Roldan, Rudi Einhorn and Norma. We wil l substitute these potent forces in our depleted team! Detailed study of the entryl i s t s pub l i shed in loca l paper. We lea rn tha t tomor row the re w i l l be one m i leraces in Hamilton. Joe Albanese, speed merchant, immediately tries, unsuccessfully,to switch from the lOK to the mile. More provisions are obtained, our mopeds arerented. Paul Warren and I take a 5-mile run. The island is gorgeous!! So green.Hybiscus blooms everywhere. The earth looks rich as Folgers. The pool is cool.Tomorrow we' l l t ry the ocean.

Thursday, 5 p.m.: We register and get our numbers at the Elbow Beach Hotel. Inmy bag of freebies I receive an interesting cap, with two flaps which fall down atthe back to protect from the sun. Beau Geste's headgear, but black. Someonepoints out that the flaps, when ra ised, make the hat look l ike a Mouseketeer 's .A comment on my running? I decide not to wear the hat in the race. Later, backat home, we have Helen's curry for dinner. Mercifully, the lOK's not tomorrow! Her daughter's home-made chutney provides the finishing touch. Marvellous!

Friday a.m. The perfect Bermudian day in January. Cloudless and 76 degrees. We swim in the ocean. The water is 69"; pink, soft sand. Surf is gnarly (asour teens would say). Meanwhile, at the Elbow Beach, the "hotel" crowd is busygetting numbers, renting moped, and only Alice and Pete are brave enough to donswimsuits. The rest of us watch enviously from afar, hoping to get a tan.Evening; Joe is mad as a wet hen becaues he couldn't keep up on his moped, whichall others find extremely amusing. But we all caucus at the mile races in Hamilton. The American Consul General, mid-forties, wins in about 5:10. George Sheehan, 70,more runner than celeb, finishes inside 7 minutes. Greg Meyer is the only "name"w e k n o w a m o n g t h e e l i t e s b u t h e d o e s n ' t w i n .

Saturday 10 a.m.: The lOK has attracted it usual fine field: John Gregorek, OrlandoPizzolato, Greg Meyer and Rob De Castella. Grete Waitz makes her umpteenth visit.

Trail Runningby

H o w i e B a s h a n t

I remember a scene in tbe film "King Kong" where Ann Darrow andJaclc Driscoll are fleeii^ from Kong, running, stumbling and falling throt^the underbrush. Behind them we hear Kong relentlessly crashing after them.Ann and Jack are ragged and desperate, trying to reach the safety of thewall before Kong catches them.

I rememt>er a scene from the Qub Cross Country Championships atBlue Mountain Reservation last November: After running together formost of the race I put a move on Tony Galfano and put about ten yards onhim with a half mile to the finish. In the closing yards I could sense Tonyclosing. Ra^ed and desperate I felt Tony was Death himself, in relentlesspursuit. With a final burst, Kii^ Kong Galfano let out a spine chilling yelland held it to the finsh where he beat me by a half step.

Melodramatic? Yup! A cross country tableau? Definitely! If running is a t>a8ic activity pared down to its essentials, then (for

those who love it) cross country is positively primal. Training runs can bepastoral. Races can be like a desperate charge, with a heightened sense ofspeed and closeness with tbe competition. It's one thing to shuffle over theclosii mile of a 10k road race; it is another matter to pick up your feet andput them down over the closing mile of a tough trail race.If you are a crosscountry and trail running aficionado or think you may become one, then staytuned because that's what this column will be devoted to. We are going tocover all aspects of trail running, including trainii^ tips and race reports aswell as a calender of events in the area and beyond.

Kicking off the TRRC season is the 3rd annual Mudders and Gruntersrace on March 19, (originally scheduled on Mar 26). To commemorate thisyear's event. Matt Blanchfield has designed a great piece of art work whichwill go on the front a 100ft cotton long sleeve t-shirt. This shirt will be a oneof a kind and will not be offered again; only race participants are eligible topurchase this three color shirt, reasonably priced at $ 10.00

Another date to keep in mind is April 23: the Leatherman's Loop lOK,which is held at Pound Ridge Reservation. Leatherman's is a one of the oldertrail runs in the area and is put on by a good bunch (The LeathermanHarriers) people. Entries are available at Super Runners Shop.

In the next issue well report on the above races and have a completecalendar for the rest of 1969.

Happy Trails.
