EAST SYDNEY CLUB NOTESA black day for the Bulldogs last week

against Newtown, when victory meantso much for us, we unfortunately wentdown in two grades, and making it moredifficult for our Firsts to enter the four.An injury to one of our key defence

men ROd Schobels didn't create a happypicture although full credit to FrankMarras his replacement. The two backpocket players John Roberts and RossGrahame effectively blocked many apenetrating attack. It was good to see the reappearance of

Nev. Woodberry and Rob Ellis supportingOwen (Hawk) Palin strongly at full for-ward.Bad luck Doggies, but we've still more

than a snarl left yet.Surprisingly our seconds missed laliit

Sunday. The low final scores were dueto the back men Col Heathcote, LaurieCammileri with Jim Skews operated well

together while up forward the two 'Blues'Jeff Langdon and Wayne Smythe deservemention. We would have liked to borrow a

couple of goals from the Thirds for themain game-they had plenty to spare!Theirs was a resounding win by 111points. Well done fellows and name tomention here were Phil Lovelee, leadinghis "men" Evan Connath, Terry Henne-ville and Doug Penno.Archie Rothman's Winners were Evan

Conach, Jim Skews, with John Robertswinning both this and the Ladies Prize(that delicious Joy Wilton cake).Speedy recoveries to injured players

Ben Haagsmar, Rod Schobel, JohnBranch, all back this week we trust. Alsoto Terry Stone and Lee Wetheridge.

See you at Trumper this week anddon't forget the 100 club closes soon.

ST. GEORGE CLUB NOTESOur victory over the Tigers was a

very good one even though it did notproduce the percentage boost we wouldhave liked. This was largely due to in-accurate kicking. (Many supportersblamed the smokescreen thrown up bythe opposition in the second quarter).Kevin Gibbons gave a classical display

of safe marking and accurate kicking.Bob Dotta and Manny Keriniaua werebrilliant forwards. Bob Stirling, GeoffGreen and Albertus Tipuloura controll-ed the centre and Graham Kemp, RexElvish and Col MacDonald were pick ofthe defenders. A pleasing effort wasthat of Geoff Argus in the ruck.Once again the Reserves threatened to

pull off an upset and but for a 10 minutelapse in the second quarter were alwaysa match for the strong Uni side.Best players: Fred Puruntatameri,

John Mayne, Gerry Gillard, John Mc-Mahon, Greg Thomas, Bill Kazaglis.'Another victory for the Thirds with

NEWTOWN CLUB NOTES7

Two good wins last Sunday at Trum-per and both coaches wearing big grins. The Seniors took the field with 3 scrat-

chings but were never headed in a rug-ged match that produced some passagesof excellent football. Cliff Matson dom-inated at CHF to win the Paratel Award.Kevin Pearson turned in a blinder atfull back to receive 2 points and the Sar-gam Award and Ian Kidd gave a polisheddisplay of roving for one point. Othersto show were Peter Vandenburg, DaveSykes, Stretch Ray and Roger Ramsey.John ggan's seconds produced' one of

their best efforts in downing a strongEasts team.John with his usual strong game at

CHS won the Erskineville Hotel Award.and was well assisted by Wayne Innes.Kevin Mann, Tony Buck, Kevin Bolton

and John Brady. The Thirds although beaten were not

disgraced. A little more encouragementand these boys could win a few morematches.Congrats to Kevin and Julie on their

engagement.Today at half time our under nines

will again go into battle with EasternSubs. Last time these two teams metthe result was a 1 all draw. Last weekin this division Alexandria downed Ers-kineville in a close game that had thecrowd roaring. Two former players figures prominent-

ly for their new clubs last week end. InCanberra Curly Gardiner was one ofAinslies best players and in Brisbane JimCosta also stood out in Wilston Grangesfirst win of the season.

Our cubs are the team to watch! Whenthis season started the name teams werewinning by comfortable margins. Underthe astute coaching of D. Lock and as-sisted by J. Eckersley, they have im-proved to the extent where the nameteams are really struggling. We thoughtat the beginning of the season they wouldprobably make the four. We think nowthey will possibly be Premiers. K. Ward,J. Mulveena, J. Hughes, K. Claxton justshaded the rest of the boys.October 17th, Presentation Night. Re-

stricted repeat, restricted to 80 membersonly, forwarned is forearmed!

BALMAIN CLUB NOTESJudging by the way Bobby Mac plays

each week he together with all of oursupporters knows there is still somE'Tiger Spirit left in a team sadly lackingin height. Eighteen year old Peter Wat- .son (Blackall Award winner for the day)led the judges votes closely followed bythe other Baby G. Foster. G. Cann rais-ed his game and his uncanny judgmentin the air was delightful.A great win for Johnny Meldrum and

his boYs. Dick Gale, R. Davis assistedJohn whilst G. Webb, playing his lastgame prior to Army Service turned ina beauty.

SYDNEY NAVAL CLUB NOTESWe must apologise for the absence of

Club Notes from last week's "Record",but it was due to matters beyond thewriter's control.Sydney Naval Club wishes to express

it appreciation to the trainers from New-town and Western Suburbs Clubs, forthe keen and willing assistance renderedduring our last two matches. Unfortu-nately their faces are known to us, butnot their names. To the chaps concern-ed, and their fellow officials go our heart-felt thanks. We've suffered two tremendous de-

feats since our last lot of notes, butwe're glad to say that our players havefought both matches out to the last. We've had lots of trouble getting suffi-cient players over the last couple ofmonths, and we've been playing withprecious little luck. However, a lot of ships are back in

Sydney and when the boys get the feelof land again, we hope to cause a few

headaches to some of our opponents. This week we play the Saints at Ers-

kineville and the Under 19 side will re-sume operations after being on leave forthe past few weeks. In the McGrath Medal voting Mark

Faxon looks to have an unassailable lead.He now has 21! points, followed by for-mer captain Dave Direen on 11, withGeoff Ingram on 10 points. The Reserves compete for the Johnson

Medal and here Geoff Ingram on 10points has a slender half point lead overMick Street, with Shiner Wright on n,Mick Graves 5 and Pat Morgan on 4!points.It is good to note the recent improved

form shown by Nigel Gillespie. Nigelhails from Canberra, and has found itdifficult to adjust to Sydney football, butis now playing very well. Stan Tutakand Dick Strange are both playing steadyfootball and Brian Manning is also animprover.

NORTH SHORE CLUB NOTESJuly 18, 1970

It seemed strange to journey to Pickento meet Southern Districts but then it hasbeen an unusual year, what with the Istsmeeting their opponents three times be-fore the Final series-actually four timesif you count the pre-season competition.

The Firsts certainly have officials andsupporters on their toes wondering whatwill happen next. Everyone hopes thatthis will nOW see the end of the mid sea-son horrors-what with a bout of shock-ing kicking, the loss of players for vari-ous reasons, plus a long casualty listmade everyone wonder-what next?Well three players failing to appearreally shook everyone, but valiant effortsby Max Chambers and George Crick, both of whom had already played a fullgame, showed how to do it. Laurie Hor-sington with a quick goal right at thebeginning and a good club effort by allsaw the Firsts victorious over a very de-termined Southern Districts.

If I name only one more player froma bunch of hard workers, it would be fairto say that once again Ken Dean reallyshowed how to ruck.

The Reserves with their continued suc-cess and good standard of football aregiving Coach Max Chambers and all sup-porters great hope for the Finals. "Skeet-er" Sheridan continued his trophy col-lecting with the Gilbey Award and new-comer Peter Aspinall in his first gametook off the clock trophy-congratula-tions Peter.

The 3rds felt this most noticeably andwere a few short, but still put in a goodperformance-keep it up lads.

Take note that with a few more Satur-day matches coming up, some social ac-tivity is possible. First a Games Night atBill Spurling's straight after the matchagainst Balmain at North Sydney on 1stAugust. Next a barbecue at the ManlyDam on Sunday, 9th August (11 a.m.) soall players and supporters get togetherand make these functions worthwhile. The Ladies Competition at Picken lastSaturday was won by Orange ticket C52,but the car vacuum cleaner has not yetbeen claimed. The player's competitionfor a bottle of good red went to Orangeticket D4.

SALESIANS CLUB NOTESWe suffered our third defeat of the

season last week when we went down toWests by 2 points. Wests played goodfootball and we couldn't settle down. TheThird quarter was the killer for us whenwe didn't score a point kicking againstthe wind. Our centre half back, JohnHall, arrived at three quarter time andthis seemed to be the sparking point forwe out scored our opponents by 36 pointsin the last quarter. Kev Walsh, AlanMurray and John Sammatt had goodgames and Blue Walsh, carrying a groininjury did well to kick 3 goals. PeterCogger, playing his first game after his"rest" in hospital partnered Jim Woodand Tony Egan in the back line and they

promise to be a good combination.Peter Heaney was a tower of strength

and if the confounded wind hadn't drop-ped at a crucial moment about 3D secondsfrom the end his last kick could havebeen a match winner.

This week we play Warringah and ex-pect to put an end to their winningstreak in a hard game at Picken.

Don't forget the social night on Sat-urday, 25th July. We want starter assoon as possible. Also, raffle ticketsshould be returned each Saturday to en-sure a full draw.

Once Again, Boys Town had successin each age group with the l1's and17's each winning by close margins.

..WESTERN SUBURBS NOTESJuly 18, 1970

With the game more than well in handthe only interest centred on Jeff Jarrattsattempts to eclipse Terry Ingersoll's 19goal record for the Magpies set in 1955.An all round team .'effort is always re-quired to complete this type of achieve-ment and Jeff was the first to acknow-ledge it.Whilst we had many good players all

day it was impossible not to notice thelion hearted team performances of StanTutak, Dick Strange and Mark Foxonof Sydney Naval.Although their team was in a hopeless

situation they never gave up and bat-tled it out right to the finish.Players to "make" Jeffs record were

Eric Joiner in the ruck, Preston Clarkea strong roving display, David Walduck,Ross Perrin, Brian Lenton, Norm Pil-beam and Phillip Fenney who impressedafter replacing Roger Hoggett. The Reserves were too good for the

Rabbits and with Dennis Conlon, JeffSmith, Peter Morgan, Amos Smith, PaulEdwards and Keith Rees in form we re-.gistered a comfortable win on the wayto the second semi final.

Matdl 'of the week was at Olds Parkon Saturday when the All Stars heldout the determined Salesians who kicked

JEFF JARRATTwith the wind in the last quarter:A great 2 point win with Bob Whit-

ney, Kev Roser, Peter Bouchier, GeorgeDegna, Don. Whibley and Dick Hardenprominent throughout the day.Players night at the Club is tentatively

set for Saturday, September 5th. Audi-tions being held shortly by Fred Shew-ring-Join the Que.James Walsh is still dispensing the

sharpest gear in town. He can be foundat 231 Beamish Street, CamPsie.

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS CLUB NOTESA well deserved Herro-Scarf prize to

Nigel Smith last week. Nigel has narrow-ly missed the award so often this seasonthat his consistency has at last been re-warded.

Noel Stewart must have kicked thegoal of the year last week and had Noelbeen available at the early part of theseason we surely would have had anotherState representative in our side. Noelmakes the big step next week end whenhe goes to Melbourne to be married andwe wish him every happiness.

It is pleasing to have Brian Kendallback with us again this week and to-gether with Gavin Smith, John Knightand Max Aitkens we have strength indefence.Bob Davies had a good game for the

reserves. If the 3rd Grade score a win today

they will almost certainly make the semifinals.Again we invite all Balmain and Syd-

ney University players and supporters tostay back and enjoy our barbeque anddance after the game.
